Taking the lead roles in musical "A Thousand Blues," K-pop singers discuss how the musical has changed them for better
The musical adaptation of 'A Thousand Blues,' which premiered in May last year, is returning this month and bringing two K-pop stars back to musical theater -- Jinho of boy group Pentagon and Hyojung of girl group Oh My Girl.
Seoul Performing Arts Company's production of "A Thousand Blues," a musical based on Cheon Seon-ran's acclaimed sci-fi novel of the same name, has changed both Jinho and Hyojung, the actors said in a recent joint media interview.
Playing the role of Collie, a humanoid jockey, Jinho shared that his personality has shifted from a "Thinking" type (in MBTI terms) to a "Feeling" type.
'I am the biggest beneficiary of this work. I'm really bad at expressing myself. My usual personality is a bit stiff, and that's how others see me. But Collie starts stiff and gradually opens up. He expresses himself and unintentionally connects with people, which makes him open his heart a little more. I also became more comfortable expressing myself and talking to people. Now, I make small talk, share silly jokes, and fun stories, and I hear a lot that I've become brighter,' the singer, songwriter, composer and vocal coach, said.
Performing a robot being accidentally equipped with a chip containing a thousand words and becoming interactive with humans has also changed his thoughts about robots.
'When I first received the script, I really wondered if I should play him completely like a robot. However, overserving how fast artificial intelligence like ChatGPT became commercialized in the past year and considering this work depicts 10 years later, I was thinking about how far AI would evolve and where it would go by then,' Jinho said. As a result, Jinho performs Collie with a burst of emotions by the musical's end.
Set in 2035, when humanoid robots are commercialized, "A Thousand Blues" revolves around a humanoid named Collie, created as a jockey, and the racehorse Today. Two sisters, Yeon-jae and Eun-hye, their mother Bo-gyeong join the duo on their journey of recovery from devastating situations while exploring their connections.
In her role as Yeon-jae, Hyojung, who debuted in musical theater with this production last year, stated that "A Thousand Blues" enabled her to imagine a future of coexistence with advanced technology.
'While working on 'A Thousand Blues,' I felt a lot that this might happen in the near future. I definitely felt that this is how the era is changing. For example, when Yeon-jae gets fired from a convenience store, service robot Betty comes out to do part-time work, just like how robots are delivering things at restaurants these days."
The musical also allowed her to confront her own pain of loss.
'Like Yeon-jae's family, my dad passed away when I was young. It's been about eight years since I last talked about my dad, so I thought maybe Yeon-jae's deficiency might be similar to the deficiency I have. I didn't really know how to bring it up before, but now I'm thinking maybe it's okay to talk about it. I think about my mom a lot,' Hyojung said.
Reflecting on the impact of advancing technology on their careers as K-pop artists and musical theater performers, Jinho expressed uncertainty about AI's potential to replace live emotional performances.
"It might sound presumptuous, but I question whether AI can truly convey the raw emotion I feel while singing," he said. "Seeing a live show is a unique experience that I believe is hard to replicate, though I could be proven wrong."
Hyojung added, "While the future is uncertain, I see the possibility of AI replacing some aspects of girl and boy groups. This technology fulfills a need, and I think it's amazing that AI could recreate me, bringing joy and memories to fans even if I were no longer here. I have faith in science and technology."

[Exclusive] Big Bang's T.O.P talks with CJ ENM for solo comeback

Industry source says rapper is considering several partners for solo album slated for late 2025 T.O.P, a former member of K-pop boy band Big Bang, is said to be in discussions with CJ ENM over a potential exclusive contract to support his solo career, according to an industry source Wednesday. The rapper spoke last month about his plans to return as a solo artist this year during a promotional interview with an international media outlet. He is currently not signed to any agency. 'T.O.P is in talks with CJ ENM for a solo contract, including plans for a new solo album scheduled for release in the second half of this year,' the source told The Korea Herald on condition of anonymity. 'But among global music distributors, CJ ENM is just one of several options he is considering.' CJ ENM is a major Korean entertainment company with music subsidiaries under its wing such as WakeOne Entertainment and Stone Music Entertainment. It also operates Lapone Entertainment, a joint venture with the Japanese conglomerate Yoshimoto Kogyo, known for producing K-pop groups with Japanese members. It remains unclear which specific label under CJ ENM is involved in the talks. When asked for comment, CJ ENM denied any such discussions. 'There have been no talks regarding an exclusive contract or comeback with T.O.P,' a CJ ENM official said. T.O.P parted ways with YG Entertainment in February 2022 after his exclusive contract ended, and in May 2023, he officially withdrew from Big Bang, stating he was entering a new chapter in his life. Since then, he has been pursuing solo activities independently — mostly acting. The rapper-turned-actor made his return to the screen last December in Netflix's 'Squid Game' Season 2, playing a former rapper named 'Thanos.' It marked his first major public appearance since receiving a suspended prison sentence in 2017 for marijuana use — a case that led to a hiatus from the entertainment industry and his eventual departure from Big Bang. In a local interview earlier this year, T.O.P publicly apologized for the controversy, signaling a desire to resume his career. 'For the past 10 years, I've only been going back and forth between my home and my music studio,' he said in January. 'I made a lot of songs. There's no exact release plan yet, but I do have something in mind for the near future." While he has yet to release any new music, fans have been anticipating a musical comeback. His most recent solo release was the single 'Doom Dada,' which dropped in November 2013. Meanwhile, Big Bang is set to mark its 20th anniversary next year. The iconic group first burst onto the K-pop scene in August 2006 and went on to become one of its most influential acts.

Korean selected as guest language of 2026 Avignon Festival

Next year's French festival to spotlight performing arts beyond K-culture hype The Avignon Festival, one of the world's most vibrant performing arts festivals, announced Wednesday that it has selected Korean as its official guest language for the 2026 edition. This is the first time an Asian language has been chosen as the guest language. 'The Avignon Festival welcomes an Asian language that is now enjoying worldwide popularity. South Korean culture fascinates the world: K-pop, cinema, series, literature. But beyond this soft power, we want to show the richness of Korean performing arts,' the Avignon Festival said in its announcement on Facebook on Tuesday. Held annually in July in the historic city of Avignon, the festival, founded in 1947, attracts more than 100,000 visitors and showcases performances spanning theater, dance, music and interdisciplinary works. The guest language initiative was introduced by current artistic director Tiago Rodrigues to spotlight the arts and culture of a specific linguistic region. The previous guest languages were English (2023), Spanish (2024) and Arabic (2025). With the guest language selected, a slew of Korean theater works are expected to be invited to the festival's IN (main) program. The Korea Arts Management Service, as the official partner, is working closely with the Avignon Festival on a co-curated program. Whereas the OFF section is open to independent participation, the IN program is curated by the festival. This will mark the first time in 28 years that Korean works are officially invited to the IN program, following the 1998 'Desire of Asia (Desir d'Asie)' project. Rodrigues' decision follows his visit to Korea in October 2023, when he attended the Seoul Performing Arts Festival, organized by KAMS. During the trip, he also performed his work "By Heart," a piece centered on memorizing poetry. "There's something about the power of trying to translate, trying to understand the other, which is extremely important nowadays in theater — but also in society,' Rodrigues said in the 2023 interview with The Korea Herald. 'This is a rare opportunity to share the emotional depth, experimental energy and spirit of Korean performing arts with the world,' said Kim Jang-ho, president of KAMS. 'Through continued exchange between Avignon and SPAF, we aim to strengthen the international ecosystem for Korean performing arts and expand cultural dialogue through the medium of language.'

Can Hybe make next ‘KPop Demon Hunters'? New film in works with Paramount

Set for 2027 release, the feature stars 'KPop Demon Hunters' voice actress Yoo Ji-young and singer Eric Nam Hybe America, the North American branch of BTS' agency Hybe, is teaming up with Paramount Pictures to co-produce a new K-pop-themed feature film, the companies said Wednesday. The film, which aims for global box office success akin to the recent animated hit 'KPop Demon Hunters,' is set to premiere in theaters in early 2027. Though the title is yet to be announced, the film will center on a Korean American teenager who defies her family's wishes and auditions for a reality TV competition with dreams of becoming part of a K-pop girl group. Yoo Ji-young, who voiced the youngest Huntrix member Joy in 'KPop Demon Hunters' and singer Eric Nam, known for his lead role as surgical resident Yona Yoon in the 2023 Hollywood drama 'Transplant,' will take on the lead roles. The production will begin filming in mid-September and will be shot entirely on location in Korea — marking the first time a major Hollywood studio has conducted a full production solely in Korea. Korean American director Benson Lee will helm the project, with a screenplay written by Eileen Shim. Producers include James Shin, president of film and television at Hybe America, along with Arthur Spector and Joshua Davis of Epic Magazine and Hybe board member Scooter Braun. Executive producers include Joshuah Bearman, John Zaozirny and Scott Manson, all from Epic Magazine. Bryan Oh, senior vice president at Paramount Pictures, will oversee the project on behalf of the studio. 'This film is my love letter to K-pop — a world filled with energy, passion, magic and an incredible community of support,' said Lee in a statement. 'I'm deeply grateful to Paramount Pictures, the production team for their unwavering commitment and everyone involved in bringing this story to life.' Shin of Hybe America said, 'We are thrilled to partner with Paramount Pictures for this historic opportunity to bring a K-pop story to global audiences. The film will highlight the dedication, artistry and global impact of K-pop, while also delivering a universal message about chasing your dreams against all odds.'
