AIBA urges PM Modi to ensure lifelong housing for former PMs, CJIs, and Lok Sabha speakers
This appeal was formally made through a detailed letter written by Adish C Aggarwala, Senior Advocate and Chairman of AIBA.
According to an official statement, Aggarwala expressed concern over recent developments, highlighting the housing struggles faced by retired Chief Justice DY Chandrachud.
Although the Supreme Court Judges (Amendment) Rules, 2022, provide retired CJIs with rent-free housing for up to six months, Chandrachud reportedly had difficulty finding suitable private accommodation in Delhi. Consequently, he requested an extension to remain in his official residence.
According to the official statement, the government accommodated this request in good faith, yet it inadvertently caused a delay in the handover of the designated bungalow to Justice Sanjiv Khanna. Even now, more than a month into his tenure, the current Chief Justice of India, Justice BR Gavai, has not moved into the residence.
In the letter, Aggarwala--who previously served as President of the Supreme Court Bar Association and Vice Chairman of the Bar Council of India--advocated for a dignified and lasting solution, according to the release.
He argued that similar to the privileges granted to the President and Vice-President, lifelong housing should be offered to individuals who have served in the highest positions across the three pillars of Indian democracy: the Legislature, Executive, and Judiciary.
In an official statement, he cited examples of previous CJIs whose terms were exceptionally brief--some lasting just 29 or 36 days--due to the seniority-based appointment system. Despite the short tenures, these individuals shoulder immense responsibility in safeguarding the Constitution and its values.
According to the release, the letter emphasised that, unlike the fixed-term appointments of other top offices, the unpredictable and often truncated nature of judicial service necessitates a stable post-retirement arrangement.
In a statement, Aggarwala's appeal concluded with strong praise for Prime Minister Modi's leadership and a call to preserve and honour India's democratic institutions by supporting those who have upheld them. Such a move, he suggested, would not only resolve a practical concern but also represent a collective tribute to the distinguished roles these officials have played. (ANI)

Mashelkar committee report to be tabled Shiv Sena leader and Marathi language minister Uday Samant on Monday said the government would table the Mashelkar committee report on implementation of the three-language formula under the National Education Policy, 2020. Samant, while speaking in the legislative assembly, reiterated that the government had tried to make Hindi compulsory, but introduce it as a third language in schools. Over 6,000 Myanmar nationals take refuge in Mizoram amid escalating Chin rebel clashes
More than 6,000 refugees from Myanmar have fled to Mizoram following fresh clashes between Chin pro-democracy groups, with civil society organisations now stepping in to mediate peace, state authorities said. People take out a rally in Agartala seeking deportation of illegal migrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar. (ANI) The fresh influx began after a June 5 shootout in Zokhawthar between two warring Chin factions — the Chin National Defence Force (CNDF) and the Chinland Defence Force (CDF). The violence continued on Monday when the Chin National Army retaliated with an assault on a CNDF stronghold at Rihli village, located just across the border from Mizoram's Saikhumphai village. 'Over 4,000 adult refugees have been registered by police in Zokhawthar in the past three days,' said Lalrawnkima, village council secretary of Zokhawthar. 'Since only those above 18 are registered, the total number with children could be well over 5,500. Every household here is hosting between 25 to 30 people, while others are being accommodated in community and church halls.' In Saikhumphai, over 700 more Myanmarese nationals have reportedly sought shelter following the attack at Rihli, according to a civil society leader from nearby Vaphai village. Mizoram home minister K Sapdanga stated that the state is committed to aiding those displaced by the conflict. 'The Mizoram government will do everything within its capacity to provide relief — not just because they are our ethnic kin, but out of sheer humanitarian responsibility,' Sapdanga said. He added that Lalmuanpuia Punte, political adviser to the chief minister, along with the Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA) and various student bodies, are actively working to broker a ceasefire between the two factions. The CNDF and CDF — comprising fighters from the Zo ethnic community — are said to be embroiled in a power struggle over control of Khawmawi, a strategic border trade town between Mizoram and Myanmar. On June 5, the CNDF reportedly captured eight camps from the CDF, forcing them out of Khawmawi after intense fighting.

Shares of Indian textile firms rally as Trump slaps 35 pc tariff on Bangladesh
New Delhi: The Indian textile companies saw their shares surging in the morning trade on Tuesday after the US President Donald Trump slapped 35 per cent tariff on Bangladesh. Shares of textile firms such as Trident, Welspun, Gokaldas Exports, KPR Mill, Vardhman Textiles and Arvind Ltd. went up in the early trade. The stock of Gokaldas Exports were up more than 7 per cent while Vardhman Textiles shares rallied 7.4 per cent and Welspun Living's stock jumped two per cent. In a letter to Bangladesh's Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, Trump said that starting on August 1, 2025 'we will charge Bangladesh a tariff of only 35 per cent on any and all Bangladeshi products sent into the United States, separate from all sectoral tariffs.' 'Please understand that the 35 per cent number is far less than what is needed to eliminate the trade deficit disparity we have with your country,' Trump wrote in the letter. He said that goods transshipped to evade a higher tariff will be subject to that higher tariff. The US President warned that if, for any reason, Bangladesh decides to raise its tariffs, then whatever number it chooses to raise them by will be added to the 35 per cent that the country charges. 'Please understand that these tariffs are necessary to correct the many years of Bangladesh's tariff and non-tariff policies and trade barriers causing these unsustainable trade deficits against the United States. This deficit is a major threat to our economy and indeed our national security,' Trump noted. If Bangladesh wishes to open its closed trading markets to the US and eliminate its tariff and non-tariff, policies and trade barriers, 'we will perhaps consider an adjustment to this letter. These tariffs may be modified upward or downward, depending on our relationship with your country,' said US President. In the US ready-made garment market, Vietnam holds a 19 per cent share, while Bangladesh accounts for 9 per cent. Trump has imposed 25 per cent tariffs on goods from Japan and South Korea, while 12 other nations received letters revealing the tariffs they will have to pay. He also said that the US 'is very close to making a deal with India'.
