Tomorrowland festival still scheduled to go ahead despite stage fire, says organiser

Yahoo17-07-2025
The Tomorrowland music festival in Belgium is still scheduled to take place this weekend despite a huge fire that destroyed the event's spectacular main stage on Wednesday (16 July).
Images shared on local news sites and social media showed flames and plumes of black smoke engulfing the stage, which took two years to build, and spreading to nearby woodland. Nearby residents were urged to close all windows and doors until the fire was under control.
With the festival due to begin on Friday (18 July), spokesperson Debby Wilmsen has reassured those attending that the fate of the event rests with authorities, according to the Belga News Agency.
'There's a lot of fake news going around, but we're definitely expecting 38,000 visitors at the Dreamville campsite tomorrow. They're looking forward to it, and we're looking forward to it, and we're going to give them a warm welcome,' Wilmsen said despite a site employee describing 'an apocalyptic scene'.
'The festival will go ahead, albeit without the main stage,' Wilmsen said. 'I can't yet say how we're going to handle that.'

In a separate statement, Wilmsen added: 'Our showpiece, which took two years to build, is gone. Fortunately, the other stages are intact. The intention is truly for the festival to go on. But we can't work magic, so it will be without the Mainstage. Our production team will now do everything to make something beautiful out of it.'
She continued by declaring that 'cancellation was never considered' but said organisers are consulting with authorities about whether the site is safe enough for people to attend.
'If tomorrow it turns out that the site is not safe and we receive instructions from the authorities, we will follow them. Safety is always the priority,' Wilmsen added.
'We suddenly heard bangs and saw fire near the stage, a huge amount of fire,' an unnamed onlooker told Het Nieuwsblad newspaper.
'We were just putting the finishing touches on it. One more day and it would be finished.'

Dozens of emergency teams were seen rushing through the festival grounds just after 6pm in an attempt to extinguish the flames and evacuate those inside the grounds.
There were no members of the public present at the time, but around 1,000 staff members were working on site.
The annual electronic music festival is held in the town of Boom, north of Brussels, draws tens of thousands of visitors from around Europe.
Some of the world's most popular DJs are due to appear on the stage over the weekend, including Martin Garrix, David Guetta, Fisher, Swedish House Mafia and Steve Aoki.
Back in 2017, the festival had to evacuate over 22,000 people after another major fire. The crowds at Barcelona's Tomorrowland Unite were forced to flee just hours before Steve Aoki was due to headline the event.

The Colorful Sneaker We'll Be Wearing on Repeat This Fall

A splash of color, whether it's your handbag, jacket, or a piece of jewelry, has the power to transform even the most basic of outfits. Welcome: red sneakers. When it comes to making a statement with minimal effort in 2025, a colour-pop sneaker—specifically, in a shade of stop-sign red—seems to have particular allure. A satisfying mix of sporty and stylish, red sneakers as a trend sits halfway between casual staple and statement-making accessory, and has become a focal point for many an it-girl outfit this summer—that's Emily Ratajkowski in a white linens and Iris Law's urban, denim trompe l'oeil co-ord included. Emily Ratajkowski - Christopher Peterson / / But the best thing about this look? While red is enjoying a moment in the spotlight right now, we know it's a shade that will transcend any seasonal trend fluctuations. The red sneaker can look just as good on holiday with shorts and a tank top as it will during the first days of fall—simply style with baggy jeans, a cashmere crewneck, and sand-coloured trench coat—on lazy weekends and in your 9-5 if styled with suit pants for some welcome juxtaposition.

Author Jessica Johns: How storytelling shaped the way she walks in the world

(ANNews) – 'Storytelling was a big part of my life while growing up in Treaty 8,' author of Bad Cree, Jessica Johns shared. 'I was always surrounded by family telling stories and jokes.' And for Johns, a member of Sucker Creek First Nation, family is everything – especially when it comes to understanding what an auntie means. In nehiyawe, the Cree language, nikawiys (meaning auntie), literally translates as my mother's sister, my second mom, with the understanding of 'we take care of each other, always' – kinship. These memories tied to Johns' childhood were of her own aunties, how they were always together cooking, crafting, organizing – with storytelling being in the center of it all. Johns' family inspired her, where she thought a lot about stories leading her to want to learn how to write and find her voice within her writing. As her writing craft grew, she started to incorporate her craft into her everyday life, like with family, she built a relationship with the ways she walks with storytelling. Finding balance with her writing also became important, with a deep understanding of teachings from the medicine wheel. 'I made sure to take time for my health,' shared Johns. 'For me, writing is part of my mental and spiritual health and also knowing how to find balance when writing. Taking care of my physical health through movement was also something I learned along the way'. Over time, Johns came to know things differently and to understand that 'writing can't happen if you are not in the world experiencing it,' she said. So far, her journey has taught her that developing her craft has been a personal journey of building that relationship with storytelling, that everyone will experience writing and the way they go about writing, differently. 'Being involved in ceremony made my life so much better,' Johns emphasized on how it became an important practice in her life. 'It is a place where I can emotionally and spiritually connect with myself.' In turn, ceremony became an understanding of her relationship to Mother Earth, 'I started to build a deeper relationship with the land and water, and how significant it became for my writing.' All-in-all, for Johns, 'ceremony lead me in a good way, taught me to be more mindful, and had a positive impact on me.' Jessica Johns debut novel, Bad Cree , won the MacEwan Book of the Year award, along with the 2024 Alex Awards; the book was also on the 2024 CBC Canada Reads longlist. When Johns is not writing, she practices her skills as an auntie while working as the Indigenous Initiatives Lead for the FIRE (funding indigenous resurgence in Edmonton) at the Edmonton Heritage Council . Behind-the-Scenes Video Revealing How SUPERMAN's Most Criticized Flight Shot Was Filmed — GeekTyrant

James Gunn has cleared the air on one of Superman 's most talked-about moments, revealing exactly how the controversial barrel-roll flying shot was pulled off. In a new behind-the-scenes video shared on Instagram, Gunn shows David Corenswet strapped into a practical rig on a soundstage at Trilith Studios. The actor is being physically spun by a crew member to simulate the dynamic mid-air roll, while massive LED screens project a snowy mountain backdrop filmed on location in Svalbard, Norway. 'On the stage at Trilith shooting the barrel roll through the mountains. All the plates were shot previously in Svalbard. 7.26.24,' Gunn wrote in the caption. The footage confirms a mix of old-school practical work and cutting-edge digital environments, shutting down earlier theories that the shot was entirely CG. This moment became a flashpoint back when it debuted in a Superman TV spot earlier this year. Some fans criticized the sequence for looking 'off,' even claiming Corenswet's face had been digitally replaced. Gunn addressed those claims head-on months ago, writing, 'There is absolutely zero CG in his face. People's faces can look different when you put a wide-angle lens up close. The background plate in Svalbard is 100% real, as is David.' Now, the new video offers proof. What looked like pure CGI to many was actually Corenswet on a practical rig with real-world elements integrated into the shot. Gunn's reveal highlights the creative process behind bringing Superman's flight to life in a way that feels tangible. It's a fascinating look at how the film blends practical effects with advanced tech, staying true to the cinematic ambition Gunn promised from the start.
