The skinny:
With all the turnover on both sides of the ball the last 18 months, Dugger and Peppers feel like part of a bygone era. (Dugger, a second-round pick in 2020, is one of the last players on the roster to have played in a postseason game as a member of the Patriots.) But heading into 2025, both remain at the top of the depth chart.
That being said, both need to find a way back following uncharacteristically subpar seasons.

The Patriots figure to get some help from Hawkins and Pettus, who provided good depth in 2024. Nicknamed 'The Eraser' in college, Woodson flashed positively during spring workouts and will almost certainly be a part of the mix. He was versatile at Cal but could ultimately be a fit at free safety if everything works according to plan. And Epps is part of the conversation, as well.
In the end, this is a position that will need to be addressed moving forward, as Peppers and Dugger are approaching 30. Their physical approach would have taken a greater toll on a lesser player, but if they can rebound, the possibility of a short-term return to the stability the duo has offered in the past is enticing, particularly as part of the new scheme installed by coach Mike Vrabel and
How does this position rate against the rest of the league?
Middle of the pack, with the chance to improve if Dugger and Peppers are back in form. There's plenty of good here, including the depth provided by Hawkins and Pettus. If Woodson is able to step in and play on a consistent basis, the ceiling for this group could reach even higher.

Quote of note:
'I don't think anybody's really sorted out anything as far as roles on this football team yet. I like the people. I like the players. You haven't seen Dugger on the field just because he's working through something, which is not uncommon in the spring. I love Jabrill's energy. I like his passion for the game. I like his energy when he comes in the building. Those things are all very positive, and then the new players and the new additions are trying to carve out a role, as well.'
— Vrabel, speaking in May about the safeties.
Biggest story lines:
Can Dugger and Peppers rebound? Were the inconsistencies in Dugger's usually steady game last year solely the result of his ankle injury or the first sign of something more concerning? Could Woodson find a spot in the starting lineup as a rookie?

We hit 37 in our Raiders countdown to kickoff. Who wore it best and who's wearing it now

We've reached 37 days until the Raiders season opener at Foxboro against the Patriots, With our countdown at 37 days we take a look at who currently dons the number in Silver & Black and who has brought it the most distinction. No. 37 Who's wearing it now: S Trey Taylor The former Jim Thorpe Award winner from Air Force was the Raiders selection in the seventh round of the 2024 NFL Draft. He enters his second season having played sparingly last season, appearing in nine games and seeing zero snaps on defense. At this point his most notable moment was mocking Patrick Mahomes with a fan's Kermit puppet during training camp last year. If he's going to change that, he'll need to work his way up the depth chart. Who wore it best: CB Lester Hayes One of the greatest cornerbacks in Raiders franchise history. He spent his entire ten-year NFL career with the Raiders. In that time, he helped the Raiders to win two Super Bowls including 1980 when he had a league-leading 13 interceptions. In total he had 39 career interceptions and made five Pro Bowls. Some believe he should be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and is only being kept out because of his generous use of Stick-em in those days. But plenty of players used it and it wasn't illegal, so it's not right for him to be discounted for it.

Micah Parsons is a huge fan of Jared Verse, especially after watching one specific play

Count Parsons among those who were blown away by Verse's rookie year NFL Top 100 Players of 2025:@RamsNFL DE Jared Verse debuts at No. 53! @NFLFilms Jared Verse exceeded all expectations in his first year with the Los Angeles Rams, winning Defensive Rookie of the Year and emerging as one of the game's best young defenders. He had the attention of every offensive tackle last season, with the recently retired Terron Armstead mentioning Verse as a player he's glad he never has to face again. Micah Parsons was impressed by Verse's rookie year, too. The Dallas Cowboys superstar praised Verse in an interview for the NFL Top 100 series, pointing out one play in particular that caught his eye. Parsons remembered watching Verse pancake Jordan Mailata when the Rams faced the Eagles, putting the 6-foot-8, 365-pound tackle on his back. 'I saw when he pancaked Jordan Mailata. I said, 'All right, he's not afraid to run through somebody's chest. This is the type of dude you want on your team.' Verse admits he had his own 'welcome to the NFL moment' during his rookie year, but Parsons saw that play as Verse welcoming Mailata to his world. 'Usually rookies get a 'welcome to the NFL' moment, but he just welcomed a vet to his world. He's like, 'I'm a rookie but I'm here to play football.' That was pretty dope to see,' Parsons said. Verse only had 4.5 sacks in the regular season, which wasn't close to the league lead. But he was tops in the NFL with 89 total pressures including the playoffs, according to Pro Football Focus. That shows the type of impact he had consistently for the Rams. 'I don't look at sacks with him. Sacks is such an odd way of looking at statistics, but his dominance, the way he gets to the quarterback, him being fearless and wanting to attack,' he added. Verse is already a star but he's well on his way to being in the conversation as one of the best overall defenders in the NFL already. Parsons is in that top tier so when he talks about a pass rusher, it carries weight.
