Annemarie Jacir's 'Palestine 36' to premiere at Toronto Film Festival

In a bold move that underscores its growing commitment to championing Arab storytelling on the global stage, Katara Studios has announced its support for Palestine 36 — the latest feature by acclaimed Palestinian filmmaker Annemarie Jacir. The film will have its world premiere as a Gala Screening at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), marking a defining moment for regional cinema.
As a lead financier, Katara Studios has been involved from script to screen — not only backing production, but also commissioning the film's haunting original score, recorded with the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra.
Set on the outskirts of Jerusalem, Palestine 36 revisits one of the most pivotal, and yet overlooked, chapters of Arab resistance — the 1936 uprising.
The film weaves a heartfelt portrait of a nation in flux, brought to life by a stellar cast: Oscar-winner Jeremy Irons, Game of Thrones actor Liam Cunningham, and Tunisian star Dhafer L'Abidine join Palestinian powerhouses Hiam Abbass, Yasmine Al Massri, Kamel El Basha, and long-time Jacir muse Saleh Bakri.
Written and directed by Jacir, Palestine 36 marks her highly anticipated return to narrative filmmaking, exploring themes of memory, resistance, and identity.
Produced by Ossama Bawardi for Philistine Films, the project brings together a powerhouse international team of co-producers including Cat Villiers (UK), Hani Farsi and Nils Åstrand for Corniche Media (UK), Olivier Barbier for MK Productions (France), Katrin Pors for Snowglobe (Denmark), and Azzam Fakhrildin and Hamza Ali.

The Wizarding World lands in Abu Dhabi: Inside 'Harry Potter: The Exhibition'

On July 31, Harry Potter's birthday, the magic officially arrived in Abu Dhabi. For the first time in the Middle East, Harry Potter: The Exhibition opened its doors at Manarat Al Saadiyat, offering fans of all ages a truly enchanting experience. With a limited run through September 21, the immersive experience promises a one-of-a-kind journey into the Wizarding World. Whether you're a lifelong Potterhead or just beginning to explore J.K. Rowling's universe, this exhibition offers an unforgettable experience filled with interactivity, innovation, and nostalgia. Curated by Warner Bros. Discovery Global Experiences in collaboration with Imagine Exhibitions, Eventim Live, Proactiv Entertainment, and the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, Harry Potter: The Exhibition is the most comprehensive touring showcase ever created around the Wizarding World. It celebrates iconic moments from the Harry Potter films, Fantastic Beasts, and even the Broadway play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, using state-of-the-art immersive design and storytelling. 'Harry Potter is the Holy Grail of experiences,' said Tom Zaller, President and CEO of Imagine Exhibitions, in a chat with City Times. 'The process took years, a huge team of people started with a bubble diagram to figure out what we wanted: personal, inclusive, interactive, surprising. The hardest part was deciding what not to include… so we just kept going. That's why it's so big, room after room after room.' From floating candles in the Great Hall to a life-sized replica of Hagrid's Hut and the iconic 'cupboard under the stairs,' the exhibition brings unforgettable scenes to life using a mix of original props, costumes, scent cues, music, and interactive tech. Visitors begin their journey by selecting a Hogwarts house, wand, and Patronus, then earn points for their house through various activities using a smart wristband. Why Abu Dhabi? While the exhibition has toured globally, this marks its Middle East debut—and the team behind it had their eyes on the UAE for years. 'We've been talking to people in the region, especially Abu Dhabi, for a long time,' Zaller revealed. 'It's a cultural hub. This is where we wanted to be.' The timing and duration, he added, were influenced by venue availability and global touring schedules. A magical hit with UAE visitors If fan reactions are anything to go by, the exhibition has more than delivered. Local content creator Joanna Rodrigues described it as 'unique, personalised, and truly for every Potterhead,' citing Hagrid's Hut as her favourite room. 'The live frames, the house sections, the real outfits—it's really cool,' she added. Rafeez Ahmed, another UAE-based content creator and 'Potterhead', said, 'For the first time, UAE has gotten something like this for all of us. I've never experienced anything like it here. Seeing real props and collecting points with the wristband, it was all so fun and exciting.' Even those new to the franchise found it immersive. 'It's a great learning experience for both fans and newcomers,' said Nabata Khan, calling the exhibition 'visually attractive and welcoming to everyone.' Beyond the wow factor, the exhibition emphasises shared experiences. 'What makes this special is the people who come to it,' said Zaller. 'It's multigenerational—grandparents, parents, and children all exploring together.' It's also a retail delight, with an exclusive selection of themed merchandise, from Hogwarts house apparel to collectibles not found anywhere else in the Wizarding World.

What does success smell like? 'Dubai Bling' stars reveal their signature scents, guilty pleasures

What does success smell like? For the stars of Dubai Bling, it might be their upcoming projects, or even themselves, because they're a constant work in progress. At a recent high-profile perfume launch by Armaf in the heart of the city, where stars from Netflix's glitzy reality show Dubai Bling made a fragrant statement, we caught up fan-favourite Safa Siddiqui, suave entrepreneur Ebraheem Al Samadi, and celebrated actress Mahira Abdel Aziz — each ready to share not just what they wear, but how they wear it, why they wear it, and what it says about them. And as it turns out, the answers were just as layered as the scents themselves. Safa Siddiqui: 'I want people to smell me before they see me.' Dressed in head-turning glam, Safa Siddiqui embodies fashion, as is visible on her Instagram. But when it comes to perfume, she's more fluid. 'I don't have one go-to,' she admits. 'It depends on my mood, so I mix and match." But she loves strong scents, she says, "I want people to smell me before they see me.' Her scent personality? 'Definitely oud.' I put it once a day. That's why I like strong scent so they can stay on all day. Perfume is deeply tied to Safa's experience of moving to Dubai. 'It was actually one of the reasons I moved here,' she says candidly. 'Everybody smells so good.' Safa's biggest perfume ick is something many can relate to: 'When it's a bit sour and mixed with sweat — like, you need to shower before putting perfume on.' And her guilty pleasure scent? 'Nail polish. I know it's bad, but I like that smell.' When asked what she'd name her own perfume line, she doesn't hesitate. ' Safa. It means pure," she says. "And I think that you should smell pure when wearing perfumes.' What does success smell like to her? 'Everything I work on smells like success,' she says matter-of-factly. 'If I don't believe in it, I won't touch it. Right now, I'm working on a new fashion brand and a couple of collaborations. There's something really big I'm doing with one of my castmates… I can't say much, NDA and all, but you're the first to know.' And who in the Dubai Bling cast smells the best? 'Mona Kattan — no question. She's the perfume queen. It's to be expected.' Ebraheem Al Samadi: ' Something Dubai has never seen before.' Ebraheem Al Samadi is on a mission to create, from restaurants to fragrance lines, and now, even dessert concepts. His scent of choice is bold and classic: Tom Ford's Tuscan Leather. 'That's my go-to perfume,' he says. Like Safa, Ebraheem describes his personality as oud. 'We're similar,' he says. 'She's just the girl version of me.' The two often mirror each other; strong-willed, unapologetic, and always forward-looking. But unlike Safa, he's not a once-a-day sprayer. 'Minimum twice a day,' he says. And his biggest fragrance turn-off? 'Citrusy smells.' As the founder of Forever Oud, a fragrance brand that blends traditional and modern notes, Ebraheem already has his foot firmly planted in the scent industry. But what does success smell like to him? 'Right now? Ice cream,' he smiles. 'I'm working on a new ice cream concept. Something Dubai has never seen before.' And guilty pleasure scent? 'Vanilla." His pick for best-smelling Dubai Bling cast member? 'Mona Kattan." Mahira Abdel Aziz: 'Success smells like me — because I'm working on myself.' Mahira Abdel Aziz brings a softer, introspective energy to the group — and her scent story reflects that. 'I just launched my own scented body shimmer spray,' she says proudly. 'It's perfect for summer — it has tobacco, vanilla, and a little glitter. Spice and nice.' If her personality were a perfume, it would be white musk. 'I love it,' she says. And her least favourite kind of scent? 'Anything too spicy." While many may reapply perfume constantly, Mahira has a practical take. 'I don't reapply a lot because all my perfumes are very long-lasting so I just spray and go. But I carry a kit with me just in case — especially if it's an 18-hour day.' The smell that reminds her most of luxury is deeply personal: J'adore by Dior. 'My mom used it when I was growing up. So, for me, it represents both luxury and family.' And what does success smell like? 'Me,' she says. 'I'm working on myself — mentally, physically, emotionally. Every day I try to become a better version of myself.' Mahira is currently preparing to relaunch her Golden Hour body shimmer, while also working on a book and an upcoming film. 'That's all I can say,' she adds. Her pick for best-smelling castmate? 'Mona, obviously. But if we're excluding her? Ebraheem. He's bold in everything, even his scent.'
