Nation first, parties are means to make country better: Shashi Tharoor

Business Standard11 hours ago
Congress Working Committee (CWC) member Shashi Tharoor on Saturday said that nation comes first and parties are the means of making the country better.
Tharoor, the MP from Thiruvananthapuram, said that the objective of a party is to create a better India and parties have the right to disagree on the best way to do that.
He also said that he will stand his ground regarding supporting the nation's armed forces and the government as he believes "this is the right thing for the country".
"Which is your first loyalty? To my mind, the nation comes first. Parties are a means of making the nation better. So, to my mind, whichever party you belong to, the objective of the party is to create a better India in its own way.
"Now, parties have every right to disagree about the best way of doing that.. As you know, a lot of people have been very critical of me because of the stand I have taken, supporting our armed forces and our government, and what happened recently in our country and our borders," he said, while speaking at a private event here on 'Peace, Harmony and National Development'.
"But I will stand my ground, because I believe this is the right thing for the country," the Congress MP added.
During his speech, he further said that politics is unfortunately or otherwise, in any democracy, about competition.
"As a result, when people like me say we respect our parties, we have certain values and convictions that keep us in our parties, but we need to cooperate with other parties in the interests of national security, sometimes the parties feel that its disloyal to them and that becomes a big problem," he said.
Later, on the sidelines of the event, he told reporters that "nation first was always my philosophy".
He said that he came back to India only to serve the nation in whatever he can, through and outside politics.
"I have tried to do that," he said.
On being asked whether he has any problems with the Congress high command, he said he was not here to discuss any politics or problems.
"I came to give two speeches. Both the speeches were on themes I hope the public will respect and value. First one was about development, the role of businesses and peace and harmony.
"The second was mainly on the theme of communal harmony and trying, at the same time, to live together in order for all of us to grow and develop. Inclusive development has been my theme throughout my 16 years in politics and I believe in inclusiveness and in development. I also believe in national security and national interest," he said.
Regarding the recent survey controversy, Tharoor said he frankly does not know who carries out such surveys.
"Someone forwarded it to me and I did a salute as a reply. I did not have anything more to say and I made no comment and I am not making any comment," he said.

Congress pans KTR's rant against Revanth

Hyderabad: Congress strongly condemned KTR's 'irresponsible' and 'unparliamentary' remarks against CM Revanth Reddy. The party held that the statements of the former MA&UD Minister reflected his sheer frustration and political bankruptcy. In a media statement PCC spokesperson Bandi Sudhakar Goud stated that KTR and his family, during their regime, made countless promises to the people of Telangana but fulfilled none. 'Instead, they used the state's resources for personal and familial gains, crushing the hopes, dreams, and ambitions of the Telangana people—particularly betraying the sacrifices made by Telangana martyrs. It is unfortunate that KTR and his family enjoyed power standing on the graveyard of martyrs, but did nothing meaningful for the state,' he alleged. Sudhakar Goud held that due to their massive corruption, Telangana was turned into a cash-starved state. In contrast, under the visionary leadership of CM Revanth Reddy, the Congress government is implementing the Six Guarantees one by one, winning public appreciation in a short span. 'KTR should remember that the people of Telangana are watching. They will give a fitting reply in the upcoming local body elections. We demand that KTR immediately apologise to Revanth Reddy for his irresponsible comments. Otherwise, he must be ready to face the wrath of the people,' he added.

Kharge says Congress would not let BJP-RSS weaken Constitution; calls Modi ‘sardar of lies'

MYSURU: All-India Congress Committee (AICC) President Mallikarjun Kharge said that the Congress and the people of the country will never allow the BJP and RSS to try to weaken or change the Constitution. Speaking at the Congress government's Sadhana Samavesha in Mysuru on Saturday, Kharge said that he, accompanied by LoP in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, will visit all the states to organise people to protect the Constitution as part of its 'Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, and Jai Samvidhan' campaign. 'If the BJP tries to change the Constitution, it will lead to their downfall. They also question Dr BR Ambedkar's role in drafting it... but members of the drafting committee themselves have clarified that Ambedkar was its principal architect. Modi should remember that he became CM and PM because of the Constitution,' the Congress president said. He said that PM Narendra Modi visited 42 countries, but when innocent people were being killed in Manipur, he didn't have the courage to visit that state. Calling PM Modi a 'Sardar of lies,' Kharge said that the former has betrayed the trust of the people. 'Rs 5 lakh to every citizen, 2 crore jobs annually, doubling farmers' income, curbing inflation, ending corruption and terrorism... none have been delivered. Modi is the 'sardar of lies' who has shattered people's trust,' he said. He also referred to the Union Minister Nitin Gadkari's statement that the number of poor is increasing and wealth is getting centralised in the hands of some wealthy people, which is contrary to the Prime Minister's claim that poverty has reduced. Kharge also took a dig at the BJP for its 'Congress-mukt Bharat' slogan. 'If Congress had just a few more seats in the Lok Sabha, Modi wouldn't have returned as PM. Modi claimed he would win over 400 seats but barely managed 220. Ego always leads to downfall,' he said.
