Diversionary tactic: Opposition slams AAP as Punjab mulls tough anti-sacrilege law
The draft also reportedly proposes action against the parents if the offender is a juvenile.OPPOSITION TRAINS GUNS ON AAPDelhi Minister and BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Wednesday accused the AAP government in Punjab of playing politics over the issue of sacrilege."I just want to ask what the Aam Aadmi Party government has been doing for the past three and a half years. This is nothing but a diversionary tactic by the state government. Law and order in Punjab is a mess and the state is under heavy debt. People are criticising this government and AAP just wants to divert the issue through this," Sirsa said while speaking to reporters in Chandigarh.Calling AAP MLA from Amritsar North Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh as their "poster boy", Sirsa alleged he was not allowed to speak about the sacrilege issues in the state assembly. Earlier this year, AAP suspended Singh, for five years over his alleged involvement in anti-party activities.Punjab Congress Chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring echoed similar concerns, stating, "It is good that a law will be made, but Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has thought about this after three and a half years. Even their battle against drugs took over three years to begin".SACRILEGE SHOULDN'T HAPPEN: AAPResponding to the criticism, Punjab Cabinet Minister Balbir Singh said, "We are working on it and our aim is that sacrilege incidents must not happen. Manjinder Singh Sirsa must focus on what is happening in Delhi."Earlier, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Cheema had also hinted at a tough new law but maintained that the government was not rushing the process and did not confirm when the bill would be tabled."A panel of legal experts is being consulted over framing the law. We will take the opinion of LR (legal remembrancer) and the AG (Advocate General) office. The law will ensure that no person dares to indulge in sacrilege. Our work (on framing the legislation) is not finished yet. When the draft is completely ready, we will share it," Cheema had said.advertisement"Earlier, SAD-BJP government framed a wrong bill and then the Congress regime framed the wrong one. We will not bring a law that requires repeated amendments," he added.PREVIOUS EFFORTS FELL SHORTThis is the third attempt by a Punjab government to enact a strict anti-sacrilege law. Previous efforts by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) government in 2016 and the Congress government in 2018 either failed to secure Presidential assent or were returned by the Centre. In 2016, the SAD-BJP government had passed the Indian Penal Code (Punjab Amendment) Bill and CrPC (Punjab Amendment) Bill, recommending life imprisonment for the sacrilege of the Guru Granth Sahib. The Centre, however, returned these bills. Two years later, the Amarinder Singh-led Congress government expanded the scope by passing similar amendment bills in 2018, adding the Bhagavad Gita, Quran and the Bible to the list of holy books protected under the proposed law. But these too failed to get the President's assent.- Ends

BJP govt has set its sights on demolishing jhuggis in Nangli Dairy: Atishi
AAP leader and former Delhi chief minister, Atishi, on Saturday said that the BJP government has started preparations to demolish jhuggi-jhopri (JJ) clusters in Nangli Dairy, just months after razing Madrasi Camp, Jailerwala Bagh, and Bhoomiheen Camp. Speaking to mediapersons, Atishi said, 'Ahead of elections, BJP leaders conducted symbolic stays in jhuggi-jhopri clusters, shared meals with residents, played ludo and carrom with children, and distributed 'Jhuggi ke sthaan par pakka makaan' cards.' 'While Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly claimed that not a single slum would be demolished in Delhi… the moment Delhi elections were over and the BJP came to power, they began tearing down the homes of the poor. The very jhuggis where they made promises are now the first to face bulldozers,' she added. Atishi, Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, said the BJP government is now preparing to demolish slums in Nangli Dairy. 'Two days ago, the BJP-run MCD pasted demolition notices on homes in the cluster, which has 250-300 jhuggis. Residents have been labelled 'encroachers' and warned that unless they submit documents within five days, their homes will be demolished,' she added. Maintaining that AAP stands firmly with the poor, Atishi said, 'Whether it's in court, at the MCD, in the Delhi Assembly or out on the streets, AAP will fight shoulder to shoulder with jhuggi dwellers. We will not allow the BJP to demolish these homes.'

Witness denies pressure to name Tytler in 1984 anti-Sikh riots case
New Delhi: A key witness in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case told a court on Saturday that she was not pressured by CBI or senior members of the Sikh community to name former Congress MP Jagdish Tytler in the case related to the killings of three Sikhs in north Delhi's Pul Bangash. Harpal Kaur Bedi (70) made the assertions while being cross-examined in the court of special judge Jitendra Singh by Tytler's counsels. "It is further wrong to suggest that my entire testimony is a deliberate attempt to frame accused Jagdish Tytler in the case. It is further wrong to suggest that my testimony is false and fabricated," she submitted. The court has posted the matter for recording the statement of another witness on July 21. It said the material brought on record showed prima facie that the accused was a member of an unlawful assembly of persons at the local gurdwara. On Friday, Bedi claimed that she initially kept mum, fearing for her only son's life, and revealed Tytler's name to CBI for the first time in 2016 after his death.

Rising egg demand strains midday meals prog in Belagavi
Belagavi: In Belagavi's govt schools, 68% of students have opted for eggs over bananas under the midday meal scheme. With prices rising to Rs 7 per egg and the govt having fixed Rs 6 per egg, school development and monitoring committees (SDMCs) are struggling to manage the cost difference. In 2021, the BJP-led state govt under then CM Bommai, introduced eggs twice a week, as a pilot scheme, in the midday meals for students from classes 1 to 8, in the districts of Bidar, Yadgir, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Koppal, Vijayapura, and Ballari. These seven districts were identified as the most backward in the state. In July 2022, the state govt extended its egg policy to all govt schools across Karnataka. After Sept 2024, Azim Premji Foundation for Development (APF) is providing financial assistance to distribute eggs to govt and aided school children from class 1 to 10 in the state four days a week. The state govt will bear the expenses of egg distribution for the remaining two days. According to the officials of the education department, of the estimated 2.5 lakh children in schools in the Belagavi educational district, 1.7 lakh children consume eggs and 77,000 children consume bananas. In the Chikodi educational district, there are 2.2 lakh children who consume eggs, while there are 1.1 lakh children who consume bananas. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Florida: Gov May Cover Your Cost To Install Solar If You Live In These Zip Codes Energy Bill Cruncher Learn More Undo It is noteworthy that the number of children who eat eggs is higher in both educational districts. The non-govt organisations responsible for distributing hot midday meals to children in schools are distributing boiled eggs to children six days a week. The govt will provide a total of six rupees per egg, which includes five rupees for buying an egg, 50 paise for cooking it, 30 paise for peeling the egg, and 20 paise for transporting the egg. But when the price of eggs increases in the market, the burden of the additional price falls on those who purchase the eggs. The education department officials say that fluctuating egg prices have presented some challenges in procurement, with requests for an increase in the budget allocation. Egg prices increase during the rainy and winter seasons. There is less demand for eggs during the month of Shravan, providing an opportunity to compensate for the difference. Laxmanrao Yakkundi, district official of Akshara Dsoha scheme and Pradhan Mantri Poshan Abhiyan, said that egg consumption in schools is increasing, and plans are being formulated by the zilla panchayat to entrust egg procurement to women's self-help groups. It will benefit both women's groups and schools significantly. Photo Name: Middaymeal Caption: The children consuming midday meals in school.
