Buffalo Public Schools faces child abuse, sexual assault exposé; detective alleges massive cover-up

Hindustan Times27-04-2025
Detective Richard Hy, a 13-year veteran of the Buffalo Police Department, broke down multiple times as he accused the Buffalo Public Schools of 'covering up' child abuse, sexual assault, and abduction reports. He made the claim on a podcast called the 'Unsubscribe Podcast'. The episode titled 'Your Kids Are In Danger - SVU Detective Exposes Buffalo School System' was posted on Saturday morning and has been viewed nearly 500,000 times.
Hy has been on the Special Victims Unit for the past two years. Speaking on the podcast, he said that the Buffalo school district has been 'intentionally not reporting the assaults of students, sexual assaults between students, and then has also used the Buffalo Police Department school resource officers to write reports and then had their influence over those officers'.
He further accused attorneys for the school district of refusing to comply with subpoenas.
The Buffalo Public School District, in a statement, said that it is 'aware of unfortunate and untrue recent allegations circulating in an online video'.
'The district is prepared to vigorously address these untruths. The district has prioritized the safety and security of its students and staff every day. BPS is the second largest district in NYS with some 60 schools, 30,000 students, and 7,000 staff and any transgressions that may happen are handled swiftly with seriousness, integrity, fairness, and empathy.'
"The Buffalo Public Schools maintains a close and professional relationship with the Buffalo Police Department as a means to ensure that safety is a priority."
The president of the Buffalo police union said Hy has the Buffalo Police Benevolent Association's support.
'Detective Richard Hy is a passionate detective in the Buffalo Police Department who prioritizes the wellbeing of the city's most vulnerable victims. As a member of the U.S. Armed Forces and a Law Enforcement Officer he does not shy away from the work he does to maintain his physical and mental health. His most recent podcast shows his passion for the job and his dedication to his mental health. Detective Hy is a valued member of the Buffalo PBA and has our support,' John Davidson said.

Crores in assets seized from DSP's premises in vig raids

1 2 3 4 Patna: Sale deeds worth crores, over 25 kisan vikas patras, gold and silver jewellery valued at more than Rs 12 lakh and several bank accounts and fixed deposits were among the assets seized during simultaneous raids conducted by the Special Vigilance Unit (SVU) on Thursday at the Patna and Khagaria residences of DSP Abhay Prasad Yadav of the prohibition, excise and registration department. The vigilance teams also found a three-storey house in Khagaria with 15 rooms built on over five katthas of land, Rs 1.05 lakh in cash and documents related to more than 20 bank accounts and various fixed deposits. The volume of both movable and immovable assets recovered significantly exceeded what was initially recorded in the FIR. Additional director general (ADG) of SVU, Pankaj Darad, said Yadav is suspected of having amassed wealth through illegitimate means far exceeding his known sources of income. "Based on our preliminary assessment, he holds assets 50% above his legitimate income. The FIR was lodged accordingly and court-sanctioned search warrants were obtained before the raids," Darad said. The raids were part of an ongoing investigation into disproportionate assets acquired during Yadav's service. The operation began early in the morning under tight security with no one allowed to enter or leave the premises. A parallel search was conducted at his Patna home. "Numerous land-related documents from Patna and Khagaria were recovered, including nine high-value sale deeds. We also found more than 25 kisan vikas patras amounting to several lakhs and documents for fixed deposits in various banks," said Darad. Yadav, a 1994-batch officer, began his career as a sub-inspector and was once abducted by Maoists while posted at Kajra police station in Munger district. He was rescued after considerable efforts. He is currently posted as DSP in the Patna prohibition unit. In a separate incident on Thursday, SVU also caught Ashok Kumar Verma, a head clerk in the education department, red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh in Patna. The action followed a written complaint from Rakesh Kumar, who alleged that Verma had demanded the money to ensure the approval of his wife's maternity leave. "After verifying the complaint, we laid a trap and caught Verma accepting the bribe," said an SVU official.

ED conducts fresh searches in Bihar govt tenders' irregularities case

The Enforcement Directorate has conducted fresh searches in a money laundering case linked to an alleged contractor-bureaucrats nexus in Bihar where purported irregularities were detected in the tenders issued by the state government. The raids were conducted at nine locations in Patna and Muzaffarpur (Bihar), Surat (Gujrarat) and Panipat (Haryana) on Thursday under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in the case linked to Patna-based contractor Rishu Shree, the federal probe agency said in a statement. Several "incriminating" evidence and documents were seized during the raids that were carried out against some people and travel agents "connected" to the contractor, it said. The money laundering case stems from an FIR registered by the special vigilance unit (SVU) of Bihar government against Rishu Shree and others. The companies of the contractor take contracts and sub-contracts in various Bihar government departments like water resources, health, public health engineering, urban development, Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation (BUIDCO), education, building and construction and rural works department. It is alleged to that the contractor has a "nexus" with various government officials to facilitate tenders for "illicit" personal gains, the ED said. The agency had conducted similar raids against certain government officials in this case in March and had seized Rs 11.64 crore.
