Atlantic Sun champion Lipscomb hires Kevin Carroll as men's head basketball coach to replace Lennie Acuff
Carroll returns to Lipscomb after leading nearby Division II Trevecca Nazarene University to record-breaking success the last two years, including the most wins in program history and the school's first-ever South Region Poll ranking. He previously served as an assistant coach for the Bisons from 2019 to 2023, helping recruit and develop multiple all-conference players.
'We are thrilled to welcome Kevin back to Lipscomb,' Lipscomb athletic director Philip Hutcheson Hutcheson said in a statement. 'Kevin is an elite basketball mind. More importantly, he embodies the values of Lipscomb University and is gifted at building meaningful relationships with young people as evidenced by the deep connections he maintains with former and current players.'
Carroll replaces Lennie Acuff, who left to take the head coaching job at Samford.
Acuff spent six seasons as head coach at Lipscomb, guiding the Bisons to their second NCAA Tournament appearance this past season with a 25-10 record overall record and a 14-4 mark in the Atlantic Sun. Lipscomb beat North Alabama to win the conference championship.
The Bisons had three straight 20-win seasons under Acuff, who compiled a 110-82 record overall at Lipscomb.

PHOENIX (AP) — Corbin Carroll and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. each drove in two runs, Brandon Pfaadt pitched into the sixth inning, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the San Diego Padres 6-2 on Monday night. Tyler Locklear and Alek Thomas each hit a solo homer for Arizona. Pfaadt (11-7) gave up two runs in 5 2/3 innings and was replaced in the sixth by Andrew Hoffmann with runners at first and third and two out. Hoffman got Ryan O'Hearn to fly out to end the threat and pitched a 1-2-3 seventh before Kyle Backhus got the final six outs for his first career save. Gurriel singled off Padres starter JP Sears (7-10) to drive in Ketel Marte and give Arizona a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Carroll hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded that drove in Blaze Alexander — who walked to lead off the inning — and made it 2-0. Arizona has won three in a row after it lost nine of 10. Manny Machado doubled with two out and scored when Jackson Merrill followed with another double in the third. Gavin Sheets drew a two-out walk, moved to second when Ramón Laureano singled and scored on a single by Jake Cronenworth to make it 5-2. Jorge Barrosa doubled to lead off the fourth inning, moved to third when Ketel Marte singled and scored on a double by Carroll. Gurriel singled to drive in Carroll and give the Diamonbacks a 5-1 lead. Key stat Thomas went 2 for 4 and is hitting .371 (13 for 35) with a double, three homers, five RBIs and two walks in 11 games since the All-Star break. Up next Padres RHP Yu Darvish (1-3, 6.46 ERA) goes against Diamondbacks RHP Ryne Nelson (6-3, 3.20) on Tuesday. ___

Latest 2026 bracketology projects UNC basketball to face familiar foe in NCAA Tournament
Preseason bracketology matchups rarely happen. The North Carolina Tar Heels' basketball program is looking to avoid what happened in the 2025 NCAA Tournament. After barely getting into the tournament, UNC beat San Diego State in the first four before falling to Ole Miss in the opening round. Season-long issues then resurfaced in the Tar Heels' loss to the Rebels and this past offseason saw an overhaul of the roster. In Joe Lunardi's latest round of 2026 bracketology, UNC earns a six seed in the 2026 NCAA Tournament. North Carolina is projected to a familiar opponent, 11-seed San Diego State, who advances via winning a First Four matchup. If this actual matchup takes place, Lunardi will cement himself as the top bracketologist in college basketball history (not that he already isn't). Lunardi might anger fans occasionally, but he's pretty accurate. Whereas the Tar Heels carried a guard-heavy roster last year, their upcoming roster will be post-heavy. UNC will carry 7-footers Henri Veesaar and Ivan Matlekovic at center, plus 6'11" Jarin Stevenson and 6'9" Caleb Wilson at power forward. Senior Seth Trimble and Colorado State transfer Kyan Evans will hold down the North Carolina backcourt, with freshman Derek Dixon and Virginia Tech transfer Jaydon Young behind them. If the Tar Heels make a deep run into the NCAA Tournament, Hubert Davis won't have to worry about his job security. UNC's roster is much deeper this coming season, despite plenty of new players, but that depth needs to be proven during non-conference gameplay. See where longtime college basketball analyst Andy Katz has the Spartans in his updated Big Ten power rankings College basketball analyst Andy Katz is expecting a notable drop off from the Spartans next season. Katz released updated power rankings for the Big Ten, and he has the Spartans dropping to the middle of the league next year. In his rankings of all 18 Big Ten schools, Katz has the Spartans coming in at No. 7. Ahead of Michigan State is Purdue (No. 1), Michigan (No. 2), Oregon (No. 3), UCLA (No. 4), Illinois (No. 5) and Wisconsin (No. 6). Michigan State won the Big Ten by three games last season and went the deepest of any team from the league in the NCAA Tournament in reaching the Elite Eight. The Spartans, however, have lost a number of key contributors from last year's squad -- including Jaden Akins and Jase Richardson. I personally have Michigan State right around the same spot as Katz but can understand some Spartans fans considering this a slight for the defending conference champs. I wouldn't be surprised if Michigan State surprised some folks again and ended up near the top of the league as we saw this past season.
