Tesla Supercharger Surge: GM And Ford EVs Begin To Roll In

What a difference a reliable charging network makes.
Earlier this month when I arrived at a massive Tesla Supercharger location (76 chargers) at Tejon Outlets in Southern California just off Interstate 5, the only other cars charging were a Honda Prologue EV and Ford Mustang Mach-E. So, for a moment, there wasn't a single Tesla. Only the Prologue, Mach-E, and a GMC Sierra Denali EV (which I was driving) and a vast, empty sea of available charging spots. Teslas began showing up soon thereafter but it was odd to see only non-Tesla EVs using the chargers. And refreshing to see so many available stalls.
And it gets even better. Less than a mile away, across Interstate 5, there was another Tesla Supercharger location with 24 chargers. And in nearby Lebec – about 20 minutes from the outlets on Interstate 5 – there was a spanking-new Supercharger location with 38 new super-fast v4 Superchargers. Not to mention the multiple Supercharger locations in Santa Clarita, Calif (further south on Interstate 5) and the three locations near my home in northwest Los Angeles.

Competition isn't even close
A night-and-day difference from competing networks such as Electrify America, which I've used extensively over the years. By comparison, there is no nearby Electrify America charging location in the long stretch of Interstate 5 between Santa Clarita, Calif and Bakersfield, Calif. versus the 130+ Tesla Superchargers in that same stretch of highway.
And even if you find one, the charging experience is very different: a handful of chargers (often no more than 8), lines, and long waits. Not to mention the hit-or-miss vagaries of Electrify America chargers: one day everything works, the next day multiple chargers are down.
Waiting, waiting, waiting…
I've been waiting for Electrify America to locate a charger near my home. But that's never happened. Despite the very high density of EVs in the northwest Los Angeles area where I live, there are no Electrify America charging stations. Not one. The closest location is in Van Nuys, Calif with 3 fast chargers (level 3) and one slow level 2 charger. So, that's a total of 3 Electrify America fast chargers in a vast area in northwest Los Angeles covering high-density EV hotspots such as Chatsworth, Porter Ranch, Granada Hills, and Simi Valley (Ventura County). Yes, there are three Electrify America locations in Santa Clarita, Calif but that's further north bordering the high desert.
GM, Ford, others need Tesla
Not everyone charges at home. At least 50 percent (and often more) of the Tesla superchargers near my home are usually being used. And lack of public charging is often cited by prospective EV buyers as a reason they hesitate to purchase an EV. GM and Ford are now offering NACS (Tesla) adapters for their EVs (see my video below) but they will soon offer NACS ports built in. That can't happen soon enough.

Video Shows Pioneer Flight in Race to Start Electric Air Taxi Service
The United Arab Emirates has taken another jump in the race to launch an electric air taxi service, completing its first test flight in Dubai with California-based Joby Aviation. Newsweek has reached out to Joby Aviation for comment. The Middle East's most tech-driven nation is racing to bring flying taxis to the skies, with its federal capital Abu Dhabi and commercial hub of Dubai each backing separate U.S. companies. As a key business ally of the United States and President Donald Trump - along with his family business - the UAE is putting American technology at the center of the global push for urban air mobility-potentially opening new international markets for U.S. aerospace firms. Dubai has successfully conducted the region's first test flight of the Joby Aviation air taxi, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai announced Monday on his account on X, formerly Twitter. According to the Dubai government's media office, the flying taxi would reduce a 45-minute trip to just 12 minutes, focusing on transport within the city. Joby is developing a zero-emission, four-passenger eVTOL that can reach 200 mph and fly up to 100 miles on a single charge. It was the first eVTOL company to receive airworthiness approval from the U.S. Air Force in 2020. While Abu Dhabi positions itself to become the first Middle Eastern city to operate flying taxis, aircraft testing is expected to begin later this year. The capital recently received flight simulators from U.S.-based Archer Aviation, focusing on routes between cities in a key step in preparations and pilot training. Both Joby and Archer plan to launch their air taxi services first in their home state - California. Dubai crown prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum on X: "This pioneering project is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the UAE's position as a global hub for innovation and advanced technology deployment." Anthony el-Khoury, Joby Aviation's General Manager for the Middle East wrote on LinkedIn: "After months of preparation, I'm incredibly proud to share that our aircraft has been flying piloted, inhabited flights in the skies of Dubai. India's Sona Comstar plans domestic magnet production to cut China imports
By Aditi Shah NEW DELHI (Reuters) -Sona Comstar, India's biggest importer of rare earth magnets, plans to locally manufacture the critical components used in electric vehicles, tapping into a government push to incentivise their production at home as China restricts their exports. China, which produces around 90% of the world's rare earth magnets, put restrictions in April on their exports as part of its response to U.S. tariffs. While the U.S. and China signed a deal this month to speed up approvals of rare earth exports, governments and companies globally are scrambling to look for alternatives. India, which has the world's third-largest car market and its fifth-largest reserves of rare earths, is working on a new program to incentivise magnet production locally to wean off China. Gurgaon-based Sona Comstar, officially known as Sona BLW Precision Forgings, is the first company in India to announce plans to make magnets domestically after the government's program became public. "Being the largest importer of rare earth magnets, we are the single largest affected party in the country. We have to look at India's self-sufficiency on magnets and are working with the government on it," Sona Comstar CEO Vivek Vikram Singh told Reuters in an interview. The company, which supplies gears and motors to car makers such as Tesla and Stellantis, imported 120 metric tonnes of magnets from China in the last financial year. Singh said the company will look at the Indian incentives once they are finalised, and other factors, to determine its investment in the local manufacturing. He said the company has the funds for local manufacturing, citing its five-fold increase in revenue to more than $400 million over the past five years. Any plans to mine and process rare earths would take years to develop, so will not provide an immediate solution to reducing reliance on China. Sona Comstar itself had plans to import 200 tonnes of magnets this year to meet the growing needs of its EV customers which make up about a third of its revenue, Singh said. The U.S. currently accounts for about 40% of Sona Comstar's revenue, ahead of India and Europe. With the recent acquisition of the Indian railways business of Escorts Kubota, the company has diversified beyond automotive and will see the majority of its revenues coming from India this year. For future growth, Sona Comstar is looking at acquiring more customers in China, Japan and South Korea. The plans for growth come amid the sudden death in June of Sona Comstar Chairman Sunjay Kapur, which sent the company's shares lower over fears over its future direction. The company appointed Jeffrey Mark Overly as its new chairman. Singh, however, said this will not change the company's course as it is run by a professional team of executives and has the kind of "management bench strength" needed to overcome crises and disruptions.
