The Boston Red Sox are going to be one of the more intriguing teams ahead of the trade deadline. While the rumors have swirled around the team for months now, Boston's chief baseball officer Craig Breslow recently spoke on their trade deadline plans.
"We're approaching the deadline, looking at ways to bolster the team given the play over the last month and a half or so," Breslow recently said on MLB Network Radio. "And you know, I think that I've been saying that the needs seem to be a bit fluid because if we talked two and a half months ago, we would've said we just lost our first baseman for the season, and we've got to figure that out. But we've gotten really strong play out of Romy Gonzalez and Abraham Toro. But we'll be open-minded about the opportunities to bring in a bat that can play first base.

BOSTON, MA - MAY 19: Craig Breslow chief baseball officer of the Boston Red Sox before the game against the New York Mets at Fenway Park on May 19, 2025 in Boston, Massachusetts."A month and a half ago, we would've said we need somebody who can pitch toward the front of our rotation. Then you look at what Lucas (Giolito) and Brayan (Bello) have done; they're pitching every bit the part of a guy who can pitch at the front of our rotation, but I don't think you'll find anybody who comes on here and says they have enough starting pitching, so that's going to be an area of focus for us as well."
Breslow addressed the Red Sox's two biggest needs: first base and starting pitching. Adding at these two positions will be huge for Boston's postseason and World Series chances this year.
While Toro and Gonzalez have been solid at first base for Boston, the Red Sox need a thumper who can make a huge impact for the offense. The trade deadline will likely see guys like Josh Naylor and Ryan O'Hearn moved, with the Red Sox looking like a fit for either guy.
The Red Sox's rotation could still use depth, too, even with the emergence of Giolito and Bello over the last few weeks. The Red Sox need to add at least one more reliable pitcher.
Breslow didn't hold back, though. He seemed to make it clear that Boston has a few holes to fill and that he plans to be proactive, not reactive, in the coming weeks.

Masataka Yoshida adds defensive duties, playing left field for Red Sox

Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up Yoshida had no qualms about putting on his glove, even on a cooler, slightly blustery summer afternoon at notoriously unpredictable Wrigley Field, saying his everyday pregame routine still includes outfield reps during batting practice. Advertisement 'It's been a while, so I'm looking forward to it,' he said through a translator. 'One thing I have to be careful about is the wind, right, for sure, and all the conditions and all the vines [ivy on the outfield walls]. … My goal was to get back out there in the outfield when I got the surgery. It's been a long process but to be able to go back out there and play the outfield, it's really important for me. I was missing it a lot.' Advertisement It's been a busy series for Yoshida, among the glut of outfielders that Cora juggles from day to day. He had two of the five hits the Sox managed against Imanaga, a player Yoshida has known since they were young. 'We're the same age and we were in the same conference for college, although we were in different leagues when we were in the NPB,' he said. 'It was kind of a unique feeling facing him.' Cora remains convinced the juggling act can work, though it's also possible the Sox could trade an outfielder before the July 31 deadline. 'We've got a lot of outfielders but he can play left field. We know that,' Cora said. '[Yoshida] will play out there. We'll keep moving guys around. But most of the time he's going to DH.' Top draft pick signed A major league source confirmed the Red Sox agreed to terms with top draft pick Kyson Witherspoon , giving him a $5 million bonus. As the franchise's first, first-round pitching selection since Tanner Houck in 2017, there is a lot of hope for the 20-year-old righthander, considered by many as the top collegiate pitcher in the draft. As a junior, he went 10-4 with a 2.65 ERA, 32 percent strikeout rate, and 6 percent walk rate for Oklahoma. Giolito a WNBA fan Lucas Giolito spent part of his All-Star break away from Fenway Park but at another of the city's famed arenas, sitting courtside with his girlfriend at TD Garden for Tuesday night's Sun-Fever game. 'She's been a massive Caitlin Clark fan since she was in Iowa,' Gioloto said. 'She loves basketball. So when we saw it on the calendar, well, she told me that they were coming to play the Sun at the Garden and it was the All-Star break, I got the tickets early. It was really, really cool. The place was packed out. It was basically an Indiana Fever home game, which, I mean, just shows how much that [Clark] has done for women's basketball.' Advertisement Although the couple had attended last year's Sun-Mercury game at the Garden, this was their first time courtside. 'I was struck with the intensity they play with, how athletic they are,' Giolito said. 'But honestly, I was taken aback by how poor the refereeing was. That's for sure. I know that that's a problem they're dealing with right now, but hopefully they can get that a little bit better, because the league, the league itself, the talent, is extraordinary.' Braves Expected To Consider Trading $73 Million All-Star: Report

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Atlanta Braves have been one of the more disappointing teams in baseball this year, and it's been quite shocking to watch. While the team came into the year with World Series expectations, it's quickly plummeted down the standings and look to be aggressive sellers at the trade deadline. While the Braves should be expected to trade their expiring contracts, there are also some players on controllable deals who could be moved. USA Today's Bob Nightengale recently reported the Braves are expected to listen to trade offers for their Gold Glove catcher, Sean Murphy, and it makes perfect sense as to why. ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JULY 19: Trent Grisham #12 of the New York Yankees reacts after hitting a grand slam in the ninth inning against the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park on July 19, 2025 in... ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JULY 19: Trent Grisham #12 of the New York Yankees reacts after hitting a grand slam in the ninth inning against the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park on July 19, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. More Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images "Atlanta is expected to listen to trade offers for second baseman Ozzie Albies, center fielder Michael Harris, and catcher Sean Murphy, but not until this winter," Nightengale wrote. "They are letting teams know that DH Marcell Ozuna, closer Raisel Iglesias, and reliever Pierce Johnson are all available. Ozuna, who has 10-and-5 rights, can veto any trade." Trading Murphy makes sense for a few reasons, but the top reason is the emergence of top prospect Drake Baldwin. Baldwin doesn't look like a future star. He looks like a star right now. The 24-year-old has been worth 2.0 WAR as he's slugged 11 home runs in under 200 at-bats. He's been sound defensively, too. There's no reason for the Braves to roster two star catchers, especially when there are so many holes on the team. They need to prioritize the farm system, and moving Murphy in a massive trade would be just what they need ahead of the trade deadline. Mets' Pete Alonso day to day with right hand contusion, 353-game streak in jeopardy

NEW YORK — New York Mets star first baseman Pete Alonso wasn't in the starting lineup Sunday because of a right hand contusion, putting his team record for consecutive games played in jeopardy. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said X-rays on Alonso's hand were negative, and he labeled Alonso as day to day. Advertisement Alonso felt pain after his first two at-bats during Saturday's game. According to Mendoza, Alonso got jammed a couple of times, and things worsened from there. On Saturday, he went 1-for-5. Mendoza left open the possibility of Alonso appearing off the bench Sunday against the Cincinnati Reds. 'He is getting treatment,' Mendoza said. 'He says he is a lot better this morning.' In Alonso's place, Mark Vientos started at first base. Sunday marked Alonso's first absence from the starting lineup since May 30, 2024 (he also wasn't in the lineup on May 6, 2024). He later played in that game, though. Alonso owns a franchise-record streak of 353 consecutive games played. His streak ranks second among active players behind Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson (717). Alonso, an All-Star this season, is slashing .276/.370/.522 with 21 home runs. 'When you are dealing with a hand injury, we thought it was best to get ahead of ourselves because it could linger,' Mendoza said.
