Would you pay $80 for popcorn? Movie theaters are betting yes

Daily Mail15 hours ago
Popcorn markups have long been a gripe for movie theatre goers, but the latest hit to their wallets will be the container it is served in. Over the last few years a new phenomenon has taken over cinemas across America: specially designed popcorn buckets to accompany blockbuster releases.
The bucket due to be released alongside Marvel's 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' is set to cost $80, the Wall Street Journal reported. It will feature a replica of the head of the film's villain Galactus, complete with glowing LED eyes and removable purple horns. It may also need its own seat at the movie theatre, as the enormous bowl is able to hold up to 361 ounces of popcorn, more than twice that of a typical large popcorn serving.
Other recent custom popcorn buckets include a Daily Planet newspaper box for 'Superman,' a martial art board bucket top for 'Karate Kid: Legends' and a vault with a special key for the latest 'Mission: Impossible.' These popcorn buckets have tended to cost in the region of $25 to $50.
Both film producers and cinema chains are eager to produce a bucket they hope will help generate revenue and excitement about an upcoming film. 'It's very accretive and complementary to what we're doing at the box office and concession sales,' John Curry, senior vice president of commercial at Regal, told the Journal. In 2023, Swifties went wild for the Eras Tour film bucket with the popstar blazoned on the side.
The craze took off even more after the release of the popcorn holder for 'Dune: Part Two' last year. The custom container from AMC was designed to resemble one of the giant sandworms from the film. However, fans soon suggested the mouth was sexually suggestive and turned the buckets into a viral sensation. 'Saturday Night Live' even created a skit about a teenager losing their virginity to the bucket.
However, the publicity led to more demand and 'now everybody wants to do a popcorn bucket and everyone wants to make it into something that will be iconic,' Rod Mason, vice president of business development at Zinc, told the Journal. Zinc licenses the rights to make its collectible buckets from studios and then movie theatres order them to sell to consumers. Chains such as AMC and Cinemark tend to order between 20,000 and 100,000 of each bucket design. Sometimes the buckets are an instant hit and sell out before being resold by consumers on eBay for hundreds of dollars. Other designs that flop, often along with the films themselves, end up being sold by the movie theatres at a discount online.

Love Island USA star Cierra Ortega makes a shock exit from the villa following offscreen racism scandal

Love Island USA 's Cierra Ortega was removed from season seven for past derogatory social media posts. Just weeks after another cast member sparked backlash for past racial slurs and was booted off of the show, she was fired when fans uncovered another offscreen racism scandal. On Sunday's episode, which aired on Peacock, narrator Iain Stirling confirmed that Ortega 'left the villa due to a personal situation' and had left Nic Vansteenberghe 'officially single.' A following scene showed him talking to Ace Green and saying he wasn't sure what he would do next — which comes just one week before the season is set to conclude. While she was filming in Fiji, sequestered from social media, a racist post from her Instagram was uncovered by Love Island fans. This comes just weeks after Yulissa Escobar departed from season seven after being introduced as an OG islander. By the beginning of the second episode, she was gone with Iain Stirling simply saying in the introduction that she had 'left the villa.' The 27-year-old real estate professional from Miami had been booted in just the third day after videos surfaced of her using the N-word in a podcast. After the swift removal of Escobar, many fans had been anticipating the same will happen with Ortega, a 25-year-old content creator from Phoenix, who arrived on Day 2. Past Instagram posts have surfaced of her using a racial slur towards Chinese people in two separate instances many years apart. One post from January 2015 showed a snap of her at the top of a mountain, using a version of the slur to describe how she smiles. There was also an Instagram story post from February 2023, showing her getting Botox treatments, again using the slur to describe her smile, and many fans are furious, calling for her immediate removal. One post from January 2015 showed a snap of her at the top of a mountain, using a version of the slur to describe how she smiles. While it remains to be seen if the show's producers will remove her like they removed Escobar, Ortega has already taken a bit hit in regards to her Instagram followers. She has lost over 200K followers in the past 48 hours after the posts first re-surfaced. Ortega was poised to potentially cross the 1 million follower mark at some point during Love Island Season 7, but her follower tally now stands at 709K. While she's currently coupled up with Nic Vansteenberghe as filming continues in Fiji, many are calling for her removal on social media. A new petition calling for her removal was started days ago, when the Instagram posts first surfaced, which currently has 6,670 verified signatures. One fan - @deannacortes - shared the petition link on X, adding, 'Send Cierra Ortega home,' with the hashtags #racist #LoveIslandUSA #stopasianhate. Another X user - @ShaneAnime1990 - insisted, 'Cierra Ortega used a racist word now we have to cancel her if she did it once she'll do it again.' Cass Rabbit (@cassrabbit) tagged both @LoveIslandUSA and @Peacock in her tweet, which read, 'Get Cierra Ortega off your show. This is now the third time I'm seeing she used the slur for asians. Y'all rightfully kicked off Yulissa for saying the n word, what about Cierra? Or does racism against asians not matter to you guys?' Another X user - @h0td1lfj0hnny - asked, 'Why has cierra not been dropped from the villa,,,, she's f***ing racist using slurs. Marvel Hulk toy to fetch thousands of pounds at auction

The stretch figure of Marvel character the Hulk is said to be 'one of the rarest stretch toys in existence'. Excalibur Auctions said the toy is one of only 30 known examples of the original Hulk stretch figure from 1979 known to still exist. It was produced by renowned toy-maker Denys Fisher (1918-2002) and comes directly from its original owner, who begged his mother for one as a child. The Hulk toy is being sold by its original owner (Image: Excalibur Auctions/PA Wire) She knew someone who worked for Denys Fisher and was able to purchase one of the first ever off the production line. The toy will go under the hammer later this month and is expected to sell for up to £5,000 and to attract 'world-wide interest'. It comes with its original packaging which bears a handwritten 'number one' on the flap of the box and is described as being in 'mint' condition having been kept out of the light and upright over the years. Jonathan Torode, from Excalibur Auctions, said: 'We are thrilled to be able to offer the opportunity to acquire one of the rarest stretch toys in existence. 'Having never been offered on the market before and to be in such good condition and with excellent provenance, renders this the ultimate for collectors. 'We therefore anticipate world-wide interest.' The Hulk figure was manufactured in Thorp Arch, Wetherby, and was sold in limited quantities only in the UK, through select mail-order catalogues and a handful of shops. It was originally part of Kenner's 'Stretch Armstrong' line and was later licensed under Denys Fisher in the UK. Toy maker Fisher, who developed the spirograph, grew up in the Leeds area and later lived in Dumfries and Cumbria. The Hulk stretch figure was filled with corn syrup to enable it to stretch and was made using the same latex and gel moulds as those used for the Stretch Armstrong figure. However, its green skin colouring, the Hulk head and the Marvel branding set it apart from the Stretch Armstrong toy. Excalibur Auctions, which is based in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire, said that the Hulk figure comes with its original instructions and has never been offered for sale since it was bought in 1979. The figure is still pliable and there is said to be no degradation of the latex 'skin'. The figure will be offered in the Excalibur Auctions Vintage Toys Diecast Models & Model Railways auction on July 26 with an estimate of £3,000-£5,000.

Woman bursts into tears over neighbor's letter after painting her house bright purple

A Michigan couple who transformed their home into a vibrant purple cottage were left speechless when an anonymous neighbor sent them a handwritten note. Maureen Clemons, 35, and her husband, 36-year-old Mike Peck, began painting their three-bedroom, one-bathroom bungalow in the vibrant city of Royal Oak during the COVID pandemic. 'We wanted something to distract ourselves and make us happy,' Clemons told Newsweek. Over the course of a week, the couple committed to their final design choice - unique lavender purple paint, replacing the home's former blue-green exterior. 'We picked purple because it felt bright and joyful,' Clemons added. 'We were going for a cute cottage vibe.' With such a one-of-a-kind home, attention was inevitable - often arriving as spontaneous compliments from those passing by. 'A couple biking by started chanting, "Go purple! Go lavender!"' Clemons said. 'Someone even stopped to tell us how happy the color made her - it brightened her day,' she added. But the most unforgettable reaction came when the couple opened their door to find an unexpected note and a nostalgic gift from a neighbor known only as 'Chris' - a worn copy of the nostalgic children's book Mr. Pine's Purple House. The fictional book by Leonard Kessler is about a man on Vine Street determined to make his house stand out from the 49 others lining the block. The note read: 'Hi, a while ago I was walking by your house when you were painting. 'It reminded me of one of my favorite books from childhood, that celebrates individuality. 'I could not remember the exact name, but after some searching I was able to find it. I hope you enjoy the story,' it continued. 'Hopefully you won't mind that it's well read. 'Happy Holidays. Your neighbor, Chris.' 'We were overwhelmed,' Clemons told Newsweek but added: 'We never figured out who Chris was.' Clemons recently shared the heartfelt story in TikTok video writing: 'We painted our house purple and our neighbor left us this book and note. Sometimes humans are so cute!!' She shared photos of the house, book, note and tattoo and wrote in the on-screen text: 'I cried.' It has now racked up over two million views. And Clemons has gone one step further to cement her love for her purple home - she has gotten a tattoo of it. The tattoo - inked by an artist who, unbeknownst to her, had previously snapped a photo of the home - features nothing but the cozy purple cottage itself. It lovingly captures the three bushes lining the home, a heart on the door and siding, the deck framed by small black railings - just like the real thing - and a puff of smoke shaped like a heart rising from the chimney, all etched forever onto her arm. To complete the artwork, the words 'I want to go home' are inscribed just beneath the house. 'I just got a tattoo to remember the house and moment,' she added, accompanied with a smiley-face emoji. The viral response on TikTok took Clemons by surprise - she described the engagement as 'crazy'. With over 3,000 comments, viewers shared how deeply the story made them feel connected to those around them. 'He gave you HIS copy of his favorite childhood book?? sobbing,' one user wrote under the post. A second added: 'Human connection is the meaning of life.' 'The joy you brought to your neighbor by simply following your own bliss,' another wrote. 'You never know your impact. I'm so glad they shared this.' Chiming in, a user said: 'Your actions for your own joy encouraged someone to look into a picture book from their youth.' 'Sometimes I forget that this is the whole point. I'm literally crying. This is so sweet,' wrote another. The purple home - now valued at a staggering $337,764, according to Zillow - was last sold for $275,000, marking a $62,764 increase in value. At 1,058 square feet, the couple's cozy 1939-built cottage features a sought-after floor plan with a spacious living room, dining room, bonus room, backyard patio, and a two-car garage. The home includes a full bathroom downstairs, while upstairs offers a half-bath and arguably its best feature - a private top-floor balcony overlooking the more muted neighboring homes.
