Huge explosion at Rome petrol station injures 45 people, World News
The blast at the distributor of petrol, diesel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in the working class Prenestino neighbourhood was heard across the capital just after 8am (2pm Singapore time).
The people hit by the explosion are being treated in local hospitals, Italian news agencies reported, with two in a critical condition due to extensive burns and needing ventilation support.
Website Roma Today published a photograph of a huge ball of flame and smoke rising high into the sky. Separate images released by the fire department showed the petrol station almost completely gutted.
"I pray for the people involved in the explosion of a gas station (...) in the heart of my Diocese. I continue to follow the developments of this tragic incident with concern," Pope Leo XIV wrote on X.
Firefighters and ambulance workers were caught up in the blast as they had been called to the scene earlier, after a truck hit a pipeline at the petrol station, Italian media said.
Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, speaking from the scene, told reporters an incident during fuel-tank refilling operations was suspected, causing a gas leak, followed by a fire and the explosion.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni thanked the police, firefighters and other emergency services for helping to ensure "that this tragic event didn't have even more serious consequences".
A sports centre that hosts a youth summer camp opposite the station was evacuated before the blast, a representative said in a Facebook video, adding that the five children in its care were safe and back with their families.
The station sported the brand of Eni but was not owned by the Italian energy group, the company said in a statement.
Five people were killed in December last year by an explosion at an Eni fuel depot near Florence.

'This resulted in an incident along North Bridge Road, where the tank came into contact with a traffic light,' the ministry said, adding that the accident came after the mobile column segment of the parade. No injuries were reported during the incident and the tank remained within the cordoned area, away from the public. Mindef said the L2SG was travelling within the speed limit of 20kmh when the incident took place. 'The tank crew responded in accordance with standard operating procedures and the L2SG was safely recovered with no damage to the vehicle,' it added. Photographer who lost equipment worth $10,000 retrieves it with netizens' help
A photographer who accidentally left cameras and lenses worth over $10,000 in a car park managed to retrieve them with the help of netizens. Zhuang Binghao, 39, told Shin Min Daily News that at around 8pm on June 26, he picked up his car from Marina Square after finishing work at the nearby PARKROYAL COLLECTION Marina Bay. However, he mistakenly drove off without his work bag containing two cameras, camera lenses and photos from the day's assignment. Mr Zhuang only realised this upon returning home. Despite hurrying back to the car park and enquiring at the mall's lost and found office, he could not find his work bag. As he had not made a police report, he was unable to check the car park's CCTV footage but did not leave until around 1am. He also checked his car's dashcam and whether any nearby vehicle dashcams could have captured useful footage. "The most important thing in there was the photos I shot that day. I felt really bad at the time. I thought I couldn't get it back. The stuff in there was worth five figures," said Mr Zhuang. Online appeal for help After posting an online appeal for help, a woman contacted Mr Zhuang to inform him that her friend had picked up the bag. The friend had made a Facebook post in search of the owner, but it was not visible to all due to its privacy settings. "I was really lucky. The other person had more than 200 friends on Facebook, and one of them happened to see my post and notified me."

Passenger injured after bottle thrown at moving bus on Orchard Road
SINGAPORE: A woman was injured on Saturday (Jul 5) after a bottle was thrown at the bus she was travelling in, SMRT said on Sunday. Bus service 190 had been travelling along Orchard Road at about 6.45pm on Saturday when a member of the public threw a bottle at the vehicle, resulting in a cracked windscreen, said SMRT Buses deputy managing director Vincent Gay. 'The bus captain brought the vehicle to a safe stop and checked on the passengers. All affected passengers were safely transferred to another bus to continue their journeys,' he said, adding that a female passenger sustained injuries. The police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that the 57-year-old woman was taken conscious to Raffles Hospital. Photos of the incident posted on social media showed a double-decker bus parked outside The Heeren with a badly cracked window on the upper floor of its left side. A hole could be seen in the window.
