MLB power rankings: Red-hot Astros look unstoppable as All-Star break nears
Perhaps the Houston Astros truly are unstoppable. After dispatching two of their bedrock players in Alex Bregman and Kyle Tucker last winter, they got off to an appropriately middling start that suggested their revamped lineup might have, finally, lost too many pieces from their championships in 2017 and 2022. Yet look who's nearly atop USA TODAY Sports' power rankings. Despite losing All-Star shortstop Jeremy Peña to a rib injury this week, and missing slugger Yordan Alvarez for almost all of the first half, the Astros continued their stunning roll toward the break, dealing the Los Angeles Dodgers their worst loss ever at Chavez Ravine as if it were the late 2010s all over again. And after a road sweep of their old adversaries, the team many love to hate has won 24 of its last 32 games, completing a startling five-week rise from No. 12 to No. 2 inpower rankings the rankings. With All-Star ace Hunter Brown and should-be All-Star Framber Valdez fronting the rotation, the club may put the American League West to bed by the trade deadline. Soon enough, they may have the No. 1 Tigers in their sights. A look at our updated rankings: 1. Detroit Tigers (-) 2. Houston Astros (+1) 3. Los Angeles Dodgers (-1) 4. Chicago Cubs (-) 5. Punishment Is Coming For WNBA Star Angel Reese
Punishment Is Coming For WNBA Star Angel Reese originally appeared on The Spun. Punishment is coming for Chicago Sky star Angel Reese on Sunday evening. Reese, 23, was named an All-Star for the second straight year. Reese, a first round pick out of LSU, is averaging 12 points and 12 rebounds per game. She is one of 12 reserves selected to the 2025 WNBA All-Star Game. Advertisement But a fine is probably coming. Reese, who scored 16 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in a 80-75 loss to the Minnesota Lynx, was not happy with the league's officiating. Reese took to social media to immediately blast the WNBA for their officiating crew. She's not happy. Angel Reese speaks Reese, who starred collegiately at LSU and Maryland, blasted the WNBA for missing some calls in the Chicago Sky's loss to the Minnesota Lynx. "diabolical," she wrote, sharing a photo of a missed foul call. She added: "DO BETTER." Reese knows that a fine is coming. Leagues don't take kindly to players or coaches openly criticizing the officiating. Advertisement But Reese appears to think that it's worth it. The Chicago Sky star made it clear that she was going to call out the WNBA's officials until things get better. Reese, though, is hardly the first notable WNBA figure to call out the league. Indiana Fever head coach Stephnaie White blasted the league's officials earlier this year. White was bothered by how the officials handled a Fever vs. Sun game. "When the officials don't get control of the ballgame, and they allow that stuff to happen ... this is what happens," White told the media. "You've got competitive women, who are the best in the world at what they do, right? And when you allow them to play physical, and you allow these things to happen, they're going to compete. And they're going to have their teammates' backs. It's exactly what you'd expect ― right? ― out of fierce competition ... I started talking to the officials in the first quarter, and we knew this was gonna happen." Advertisement We'll have to wait and see what the league does in response to Reese's criticism. A fine is coming. Punishment Is Coming For WNBA Star Angel Reese first appeared on The Spun on Jul 7, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Jul 7, 2025, where it first appeared.
