‘Reduced Representation In Parliament': Chandrababu Naidu Urges Andhra People To Have More Kids
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has once again announced plans to boost the state's population. While addressing an event on the occasion of World Population Day on Friday, Naidu said that his government would soon launch a policy to encourage people to have more children.
'We will launch a robust policy on population growth soon. Population is our strongest economic resource. The world is increasingly reliant on countries with large populations," he said as reported by Indian Express.
He further raised concerns that South India's low birth rate could affect its future representation in Parliament. He said that the fertility rate in the state must be increased to avoid a human resource crisis in the future.
'To avoid a human resource crisis in the future, the fertility rate in the state must rise. Joint families are disappearing. There's growing concern about the declining population in South India. While Parliament seats may increase in the future, southern states could see reduced representation," he added as reported by the news outlet.
Citing concerns that a shrinking population could impede economic development, the Chief Minister indicated that his government is planning to implement measures to boost birth rates, acknowledging the influence of increasing living expenses.
Naidu said that while in the past the state government had launched a movement for population control in the state, the need now is population management. He said India's ability to compete with developed nations is because of its population.
'In the past, population was seen as a burden, but today, it is considered an asset. Earlier, we used to offer incentives to control population growth. For instance, families with up to five members were given 25 kilograms of rice, but no additional benefits were provided to families with more than five members. At that time, we even enacted a law disqualifying those with more than two children from contesting local body elections, as it suited the needs of the society back then," he had said while addressing a press conference.
Citing statistics, Naidu had shared projections about the state's declining population. 'By 2026, Andhra Pradesh's population is expected to reach 53.8 million. It is estimated to grow to 54.2 million by 2031 and 54.4 million by 2036. However, by 2041, the population is likely to decline to 54.2 million and could further drop to 54.1 million by 2051," he explained.

Civil aviation minister hails AAIB for initial report on Air India crash
Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu on Saturday hailed the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) for conducting a "transparent and professional" investigation into the Air India flight AI171 crash. The Air India Boeing 787-8 aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12, resulting in the deaths of 260 individuals, including 229 passengers, 12 crew members, and 19 people on the ground. Speaking to ANI, the Union Minister said the preliminary report released by AAIB on Friday is under review by the Civil Aviation Ministry, adding that further comments will be made only after the final report is released. "I like to appreciate the job done by the AIBB; very commendable job. It was a very challenging and tough task infact for the first time safely securing the blackbox and trying to decode the data and everything done in India itself in the lab in Delhi AIBB is the first of its kind, so I like to appreciate all the efforts they have put in to do a very transparent and very mature professional way the investigation has been done and also all the international protocols have been followed," Naidu said. "This is a preliminary report; at the ministry, we are analysing it... We are coordinating with AIBB for any support they need. We are hoping that the final reports come out soon so that we can arrive at some conclusion," he added. Naidu further stated that pilots and crew are the backbone of the aviation industry and assured that all necessary steps would be taken to uphold safety standards. On Friday, India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) released the preliminary report into the tragic crash of Air India flight AI171. The report outlines a harrowing sequence of events that unfolded within 90 seconds of takeoff, as both engines of the aircraft shut down unexpectedly during the initial climb, leading to a catastrophic loss of thrust and rapid descent. Flight data recovered from the aircraft's Enhanced Airborne Flight Recorder (EAFR) revealed that the fuel cutoff switches for both engines were inadvertently moved from RUN to CUTOFF, one after the other within a 1-second interval, at an altitude just moments after liftoff. One pilot was heard asking the other, "Why did you cut off?" to which the response was, "I did not." This uncommanded shutdown triggered the deployment of the Ram Air Turbine (RAT), and the aircraft began losing altitude almost immediately, unable to sustain powered flight. According to the AAIB, the pilots re-engaged the fuel switches in an attempt to relight both engines. Engine 1 showed signs of recovering thrust, but Engine 2 failed to stabilise. The aircraft, which had briefly reached a speed of 180 knots, was already descending and failed to regain altitude. The final distress call -- a "MAYDAY" -- was transmitted at 08:09 UTC, just seconds before the aircraft crashed into residential buildings outside the airport perimeter. What Might Save Kerala Nurse Nimisha Priya From Yemen Execution? Activist Reveals Only Hope
Nimisha Priya Execution: Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya's family offered $1 million to the victim's relatives in Yemen to save her from execution. With just three days left before the scheduled execution of Nimisha Priya, a Kerala nurse convicted of murdering a Yemeni national in 2017, her family offered $1 million as 'blood money' to the victim's relatives in a final bid to save her life. Babu John, an activist with the Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council, confirmed that negotiations are ongoing in Yemen's capital Sana'a, where family representative Samuel Jerome is leading the talks on behalf of Nimisha Priya's family. 'The status is that the power of attorney holder for Nimisha's family, Samuel Jerome, who is already in Yemen's Sana'a, is leading the negotiation from our side. It took many months to negotiate and we have proposed $1 million to save Nimisha Priya," Babu John said as per NDTV. He added, 'The Yemeni man's family has not said yes or no. Once the family says yes, we will mobilise the funds and give them to the family if they are ready to pardon Nimisha." Under Sharia law, which governs Yemen's legal system, a convicted person can be spared execution if the victim's family accepts blood money (called diyah) and agrees to grant a pardon. The law permits such pardons to be issued even minutes before the execution. 'That is the important thing. Apart from the money, within the Sharia law… we are requesting the family to pardon Nimisha for whatever she did or whatever she is accused of. If the family is ready to pardon with or without money… anyway we are ready to pay $1 million. That is the offer," Babu John told the outlet. Nimisha Priya In 2017, she attempted to sedate him with an injection to recover her documents and flee Yemen but Talal Abdo Mehdi died in the process. Nimisha Priya was arrested and sentenced to death by a Yemeni court. Her conviction was upheld by the Supreme Judicial Council in November 2023 and the country's president approved her execution date for July 16. 'Now the only hope is that the Yemeni man's family pardons Nimisha… India is a big power in this region and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a good name and a big reputation. If the Indian government asks the Houthi rebel government in Yemen, it will be done… The Yemeni person has died and we would like to help his family," Babu John said. Air India plane crash: Will there be a final probe report? Union minister Naidu says ‘should not jump to conclusion…'
Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu on Saturday said that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB)'s report on the Ahmedabad-London Air India plane crash last month is based on preliminary findings and one should not jump into conclusions till the final report is released. 'This is a preliminary report, at the ministry we are analysing are coordinating with the AIBB for any support they need. We are hoping that the final reports come out soon so that we can arrive at some conclusion,' ANI quoted Naidu as saying. 'I don't think we should jump into any conclusions over this,' he added. Naidu further stated that pilots and crew are the backbone of the aviation industry and assured that all necessary steps would be taken to uphold safety standards. The civil aviation minister's statements come hours after the AAIB released its preliminary probe report that indicated a possible fuel switch as the reason behind the crash.
