Google Hires A.I. Leaders From a Start-Up That OpenAI Was Courting
The deal, which became public on Friday, was the latest example of how tech companies are waging battles to suck up A.I. talent. The move deepens Google's bench of A.I. engineers while also scoring it a point against OpenAI, one of its biggest challengers in the field.
In May, OpenAI was in talks to acquire Windsurf in a $3 billion deal that would help add thousands of new customers and expand OpenAI's offerings. But the talks broke down in recent weeks because Windsurf's leaders had concerns about the information it might have to share about its product with Microsoft, one of OpenAI's largest investors, two people with knowledge of the deal said.
Under Google's agreement, Varun Mohan, the chief executive of Windsurf, and Douglas Chen, a co-founder, will join Google DeepMind, the company's A.I. division, along with several of Windsurf's research and development employees. Google is also paying for a nonexclusive license for Windsurf technology. It declined to disclose what it was paying.
'We're excited to welcome some top A.I. coding talent from Windsurf's team to Google DeepMind to advance our work in agentic coding,' Google said in a statement. As part of the statement, Mr. Mohan and Mr. Chen said they were excited to join Google.
The Verge and The Information earlier reported on Windsurf's deal.
Silicon Valley giants including Meta have lately poached A.I. talent from rivals and start-ups, sometimes offering compensation packages as high as $100 million. Google has chosen to pay to bring on top A.I. talent from start-ups rather than acquiring the smaller businesses outright. In 2023, Google agreed to pay $3 billion to license technology from Character.AI, a chatbot start-up. The deal allowed Google to hire Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, who both had left Google to start Character.ai.

Hard Rock bringing Reverb hotel to downtown Florence
FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) — Hard Rock International has officially announced the plans for a Hard Rock Reverb hotel in downtown Florence. For over 15 years, the Days Inn hotel has stood vacant in the heart of Florence, but that's about to change. 'Crocheting Queen' turns 105 years old, her secret to triple digits 'I am very excited to see that it was released the press release from International Hard Rock Reverb Hotel yesterday, so it's really exciting to see this finally coming to fruition,' says Kaytrina Simmons, Florence Council President. Simmons tells News 19 about some of the features that people can expect with the new hotel. 'It's gonna have like 155 hotel rooms, it's gonna have conference centers. It will have two restaurants in there, and just rooftop, and just everything that you would want it will have,' Simmons said. Simmons added that there is a need for more lodging options in Florence. 'There is certainly a shortage of hotels. People come here to our beautiful little hidden jam as a destination spot, and they're having to drive as far as Decatur or perhaps sometimes even Athens just to have a place to stay in a hotel, so this is certainly going to be an asset,' Simmons said. TVA announces that Wilson Lock Interim Guard Wall will be Installed this summer And with a new business, that can only mean more jobs are created. 'It's slated to bring around 200 jobs to the area within management and they're typical jobs that come with a hotel, and restaurants', Simmons said. Simmons tells me, construction is set to begin this fall, and the projected opening date is set for 2028. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Hydrofest not returning to Lake Guntersville in 2026
GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Marshall County Tourism and Sports has announced that Guntersville Lake HydroFest will not continue next year. Organizers said the decision comes after a decline in local support for the event. MCTS President Katy Norton said that while the event still sees thousands of out-of-state visitors, the event only had a few hundred attendees from Marshall County. MCTS also said that local sponsorships have declined. Hard Rock bringing Reverb hotel to downtown Florence 'While we are sad to bring an end to this annual event, we cannot continue to raise the money required to host the races without our local residents and businesses supporting our efforts, both in attendance and by sharing and supporting the event in a positive manner,' Norton said. MCTS said the event has also consistently brought in $3.5 million in economic impact to Marshall County. Norton explained that while the economic impact of the event was always high, it just didn't receive consistent enough support locally. 'While the economic impact has stayed very high because the economic impact comes from lodging tax revenue, sales tax revenue from the visitors, the local money that helps support the event through ticket sales and sponsorships has gone down every year,' she said. Despite those numbers, Daniel Shepard, who attended Hydrofest this year, said the event had fans in Marshall County. 'They may not have been Guntersville locals, but Grant, Albertville, Boaz, you know, the small towns, they were there,' he said. HydroFest began in 2018 and is the smallest community to host the H1 Unlimited hydroplanes, according to MCTS. The organization said that since then, Guntersville has won the 'Site of the Year' award five times. 'Guntersville Lake HydroFest has drawn international attention to our lake and community over the past seven years,' Norton said. 'We appreciate the sponsors who began this journey with us and have stayed with us since 2018. We also are grateful to our planning committee, all the city departments, county and state agencies who have worked alongside us to bring this event to our community.' Norton said the event is one of the things that make Guntersville such a unique place to live, and losing it is a hit. 'For us to be the smallest community in the nation to host an event with H-1 Unlimited hydroplane and to have it to go away, you know, it was one of those things that makes us so unique,' she said. Shepard said with HydroFest gone, he likely won't have an opportunity to have the same experience again. 'I can't drive to Washington and Oregon and all over to see it,' He said. 'I mean, yes, I can watch it on YouTube. But that's not the same as being here, hearing the engines run and spectators and commentators. It's like NASCAR, you know? You go to the race to hear it and feel it, not just see it on a TV screen.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
