Minister sacked for WhatsApp posts will not face police action
Andrew Gwynne is under investigation by the parliamentary authorities after he wrote in the group that he hoped a 72-year-old pensioner would soon be dead.
He also joked about a local cycling campaigner being 'mown down', suggested that a local vicar be 'burned on a bonfire' and made derogatory comments about Angela Rayner and Diane Abbott.
A Greater Manchester Police (GMP) spokesman has now told The Telegraph the messages have been reviewed by a senior investigating officer, and that the force has decided to take no further action.
Previously, GMP said it had begun 'initial inquiries' into the incident, and recorded a non-crime hate incident in its official figures.
The messages provoked fury from constituents when they were first reported in February, while the leak to The Mail on Sunday was blamed on Mr Gwynne's political opponents.
In one message, Mr Gwynne called a voter a 'hag' and said she lived in a 's--t' house, according to the full transcript of the chat, seen by The Telegraph.
He apologised for the messages, describing them as 'badly misjudged', while another Labour MP in the group, Oliver Ryan, also apologised.
Mr Gwynne, the MP for Denton and Reddish, was sacked from his position as a junior health minister on the day his messages were first reported. Both he and Mr Ryan have been suspended by the Labour Party pending an investigation.
Meanwhile, Parliament's standards commissioner has launched a separate investigation into Mr Gwynne for allegedly 'causing significant damage to the reputation of the House as a whole, or of its Members generally'.
Several people made complaints to the police after the messages were reported, prompting GMP to release a statement that 'a small number of complaints relating to publicised messages allegedly from a WhatsApp group' were being examined.
They also confirmed officers had recorded a non-crime hate incident, but said 'initial inquiries' were ongoing.
A GMP spokesman told The Telegraph: 'Following the complaints received relating to the recently published WhatsApp conversation, work was undertaken to review the contents by a senior investigating officer.
'As a result of this assessment, Greater Manchester Police has concluded that no further action will be taken. The complainants have been written to and advised of this outcome.'

Local resident Emma Crichton told the BBC: "Earlier this month there was a flatbed truck with a fresh water supply on it for three generations of campers who were there for 10 days with a generator with loud music. "I have people wandering into my garden asking if they can park there, people coming in and asking if they can use my loo. We have people having raves, it's like a music festival. I'm not a shrinking violet. I like a drink and I like loud music, but it's intolerable and I don't feel safe." Rangers have increased patrols in the area, collecting discarded items such as soiled nappies and a hypodermic needle. The locale typically teems with visitors between October or whenever the sun makes an appearance. Ms Crichton criticised the council and police response, stating: "Some of the rangers have been doing the job since before I got there so they know the area well and they're very invested in it. Every time I make a complaint, I'm told there's no law being broken. I cannot accept that." Negative feedback has also appeared on the Loch Clunie Facebook page, including a recent post from a man who visited the loch with his 10 year old daughter. He penned: "It was like Skid Row. Strathtay Councillor Ian James described the situation as an "absolute nightmare" for local residents. He commented that they were "putting up with loud music and drunken behaviour. Although it's a beautiful area, it's just not a nice place to be when it's like that." He alleged that a friend of his had been stabbed after requesting people not to camp in his garden. He added: "If this was Perth city centre, we'd have the police turning up and everybody would be trying their best to stop it, but this is in the countryside so it's unseen by most." A spokesperson for Perth and Kinross Council has stated that the local authority is keen for both visitors and residents to enjoy areas such as Loch of Clunie in a "safe, responsible and courteous manner". The spokesperson further added: "Parking attendants patrol the clearways, issuing guidance and penalty notices as appropriate. "We fully recognise the community's ongoing concerns about repeated incidents of irresponsible camping near residential properties. Given the understandable feelings of vulnerability and anxiety this has caused, we have advised residents not to engage directly with visitors and to report any threatening behaviour to Police Scotland." A representative from Police Scotland said: "We understand the impact anti-social behaviour and disorder has on the local community, and we would like to thank locals who continue to bring these incidents to our attention. Officers continue to work with local partners to address any concerns in the area, and where criminality is established, those responsible will be dealt with appropriately."

Germany train derailment kills at least three leaving others seriously injured
Authorities confirmed approximately 100 passengers were on the train when at least two carriages left the tracks in Biberach, Germany, with several people killed. At least three people were killed and others seriously injured when a train derailed in southern Germany, police say. Authorities said around 100 passengers were on board the RE55 regional express train when it left the tracks in the Biberach district. A large number of emergency services were deployed to the scene. Preliminary reports say the crash resulted in numerous injuries. Several people were killed in what has been described as a "mass casualty incident" by local authorities, reports the Mirror. Federal and local police said the cause of the crash near Riedlingen, roughly 158km (98 miles) west of Munich, remains under investigation. It was not immediately clear how many people were injured. In a statement shared on X, German chancellor Friedrich Merz said: "The train accident in the Biberach district deeply shocks me. "I am in close contact with the Interior Minister and the Transport Minister, and I have asked them to support the rescue services with all available means. "We mourn the victims. I express my condolences to their families." According to the German Press Agency (dpa), Baden-Württemberg's Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) is also heading to the scene of the accident. His spokesman said he will get an impression of the rescue efforts following the derailment. A spokesperson for the Federal Police Stuttgart told Bild: "Two carriages of the Deutsche Bahn regional express have derailed." Because of the number of people killed and injured, the crash has been declared a mass casualty incident by German authorities. Trump agrees US-EU trade deal avoiding tariff war in Turnberry talks with Von der Leyen
A deal was struck after European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen met with the US President at his golf resort in South Ayrshire. Donald Trump has announced a huge trade deal with the European Union worth more than $1.35 trillion (£1.05 trillion) after meeting European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen at his Turnberry golf resort in South Ayrshire. The former US President said the agreement, struck during Von der Leyen's visit today, will see the EU buy $750bn of American energy and invest a further $600bn into the US economy. Trump told reporters: 'The European Union is going to agree to purchase from the United States $750 billion worth of energy. 'They are going to agree to invest into the United States $600 billion more than they're investing already. So they're investing a large amount of money. 'You know what that amount of money is, it's very substantial.' He added that all EU countries had agreed to open up their markets for zero-tariff trade with the US and to purchase 'a vast amount of military equipment,' calling the deal 'bigger than any other deal', reports the Mirror. Trump also revealed both sides had agreed to a 'straight across' 15% tariff on cars. 'I think that basically concludes the deal,' he said. Von der Leyen said the US and EU remain the world's biggest trading partners and described the talks as an attempt to 'rebalance' the multi-trillion-dollar relationship.
