'Dubai and I grew up together': Halima Jumani's trailblazing rise from finance to CEO of fresh food e-commerce giant

She watched a city rise before her eyes and grew with it.
That's the story of Dubai-based Halima Jumani. Her journey began long before she became the CEO of Kibsons E-Commerce in 2017, an online delivery service transforming the grocery e-commerce landscape in the UAE.
With a smile and flourish she says, 'Dubai and I grew together. The city was born in the early 1970s, and I was born in 1979. I was born, raised here and my whole life was here.' Life was still relatively simple; it was all about being with her friends and family. 'Dubai was a humbling place, filled with sincerity. The focus was on hard work,' says Jumani.
She vividly remembers what those early years were like: Innovation was everywhere. 'The government was doing everything to keep people safe and secure, and each sector was slowly building, growing,' she says, recalling the gradual flourishing of entertainment. That spirit of growth and possibility wasn't just shaping the city — it was shaping her.
Brimming with curiosity and drive, Jumani dove into every opportunity the city presented. Whether it was coding in computer science or crafting a commendable thesis on biodegradable nappies, she embraced it all. Her academic focus sharpened, and it wasn't long before she discovered where her true passion lay.
It was in finance.
'I always knew that I wanted to do it. I did a one-year course, and by the time I was 21, I had graduated with all requirements,' she says
She married Jamal Hussain in 1999, becoming part of the family behind Kibsons, which has been providing fresh food in the UAE since 1980. At the time, she was at KPMG. While she lent a helping hand to the family business, she hadn't formally joined. 'I was handling several jobs and two children at the time,' she smiles.
But as the years passed, Jumani began to see a shift in herself. Her laser-sharp focus and ability to focus on detail, her greatest strengths, were starting to feel limiting. 'I wanted to shift to a more helicopter view, a broader view of life.' That desire sparked a bold decision: in 2005, she packed her bags — and her two young children — and moved to the UK for a two-year MBA. There, she didn't just study; she unraveled and rebuilt her way of thinking, working on herself from the inside out.
Joining Kibsons
Her third child was born in 2007, and with that milestone, Jumani knew it was finally time to dedicate herself fully to the family business. While her husband, Hussain, focused on the commercial side, she took the reins on finance and operations. Their roles complemented each other, forming a strong foundation for what was to come. It was, as she describes, a regimented process.
However, such stories come with painful decisions. Jumani admits, with a laugh, that she can be ruthless when the situation calls for it. 'If certain aspects need to be pulled up, I wouldn't hesitate to do so.' There were difficult conversations and plenty of pushback, especially from long-standing team members. 'But there were problems in the distribution vertical, and for two years, I struggled to understand what was going wrong, on how to cut costs, with storage and listing fees. And I found that the contracts were flawed,' she says.
As practical and results-driven as she is, Jumani also recognised the human side of business, that real people, with livelihoods on the line, were depending on her. That sense of responsibility is what inspired her to build Kibsons' e-commerce platform. 'I was responsible for people's jobs, I just couldn't let it all fall apart. And what's so beautiful now, is that they all thriving now, some of them have grown as leaders,' she says, referring to team members who now lead various operations.
That was one motivation. 'Another, was because I wanted to bring healthy eating into people's homes,' she says. And that's exactly what Kibsons set out to do — make healthy eating accessible and affordable. 'In our home, rest, recovery and nutrition are always prioritised. I mean, blueberries are my popcorn,' says Jumani with a laugh.
From a modest start of 50 orders a day, Kibsons now delivers over 150,000 orders daily.
The difficulties of COVID
COVID struck in 2020, uprooting people's livelihoods in a flash. Jumani realised that the business had to be at the forefront along with healthcare, to help people, and deliver fresh food to them everyday. 'When COVID hit, we saw the world needed us. The orders just grew, and I went and told my staff, that we are all here for a reason. People need us. The families need us, as groceries are so important,' she says.
Jumani continues, 'Those first few months, everyone worked around the clock, making sure families got their groceries on time. Nobody took a day off, even though our staff was limited,' she remembers.
It wasn't about a business; it had become about humanity. And that's how for her, the business transformed into something more than just an e-commerce platform. Soon, she hired 400 people too.
And as her story shows, Jumani's ability to evolve, from a detail-driven accountant to a strategic leader, from a young coder to a champion of wellness, reflects the very spirit of Dubai she grew up with: bold, adaptive, and future-facing, as she says.

The Mum Club Dubai, a local franchise of the UK-based community, has experienced remarkable growth since launching in November 2022. What began as a single monthly coffee club has expanded to eight events per month, serving over 3,000 active subscribers. The club welcomes mothers of all nationalities aged 20-40, creating an inclusive space for Dubai's diverse expatriate community. The club's origin story reflects the challenges many expatriate mothers face. Founder Jo moved to Dubai several years ago without knowing anyone and wanted to connect with like-minded mothers. Having experienced the positive impact of The Mum Club community in her hometown, she approached The Mum Club UK about franchising when her family relocated to Dubai for her husband's work. 'Our mission is to create a safe, welcoming space where mums can take a moment for themselves,' explains the club. 'There are so many classes aimed at the babies, which is great, but sometimes the mum is forgotten about. 'They say it takes a village to raise a child, but what happens when you've moved abroad and hopped on a plane to live in a whole new country, away from your family and lifelong friends?' the club asks. 'Increasingly, we see people moving to Dubai for a better life, but they are leaving behind their 'villages' and we need help.' The city's fast-paced environment compounds these challenges. 'Dubai is fast-paced, and maternity/paternity leave isn't always as long as what we may have in our home countries. Husbands go back to work quicker, leaving mothers at home and often isolated, not knowing anyone else to lean on.' Dubai's multicultural, transient nature creates additional networking complexities. 'Dubai is busy, Dubai is transient, and Dubai is multicultural. It's a hub for networking – but networking as a mother is different. Do we even speak the same language? Do you even want another friend? Where do we meet? And even when you feel like you know some friends, you can't get complacent as people's plans change all the time!' The club's inclusive approach addresses these concerns directly: 'We are here for mums full stop. That's any mums, any age and any nationality.' They provide qualified babysitting help at most events and ensure staff are present to welcome mothers so 'no one is ever left to feel by themselves.' Diverse activities The club offers diverse programming, including breakfast clubs, fitness classes, and cinema screenings. Their breakfast clubs have become particularly popular, providing 'a breath of fresh air for mums offering a relaxed, stylish space to connect with other women who get it while enjoying great food, real conversations, and a moment to focus on you (not just the kids).' Cinema clubs feature a unique format where mothers enjoy a breakfast buffet and networking opportunity before watching the latest releases in Roxy Platinum reclining seats. 'We have our own private screen and so we lift the lighting for mums to be able to tend to their babies throughout, and the sound is lowered so it's baby-friendly. It's a gorgeous morning.' One standout offering is Reformer Pilates classes, where 'you can have your baby next to you whilst you do your class. Our on-hand babysitters are there to help you so you can get the most out of your workout.' Venue selection reflects careful consideration of mothers' needs. The club seeks locations that accommodate 30 mothers with babies and prams, offer easy accessibility with nearby parking, provide comfortable baby changing facilities, maintain aesthetically pleasing atmospheres, and serve excellent food and coffee. 'There are numerous restaurants in Dubai, endless in fact, but we set ourselves the mission to search for the best and most convenient with the mum in mind. There are many baby-friendly venues, but our goal is to make it the most 'mum' friendly.' Weather considerations are crucial in Dubai's extreme climate. 'We have specific events which we can run outside, but we only do these in the cooler winter months, and then we move them to alternate venues inside when it's too hot again!' 'The unicorn I needed' Nazli de Gee's experience illustrates the club's impact. The 32-year-old South African mother of four children - Mikhail (11), Aiden (8), Alana (3), and Mila (2) - moved to the UAE in 2022 when her husband Wesley received a job offer. The family completed their relocation within two months. 'When we moved to the UAE, everything felt like a whirlwind. Within six months, I was pregnant with our fourth baby. We were still trying to settle in, I had no family, no friends, no car and suddenly I went from a working woman with a career in marketing to a stay-at-home mom, just trying to keep it together,' Nazli recalls. During this transition, she also launched her small business, Peek-a-Boo. 'So after a few months of trying to adult, mom, wife, mompreneur and socialise all at once, I saw The Mum Club on Instagram and I figured The Mum Club might just be the unicorn I needed - moms, coffee, conversation, and someone else entertaining the baby for once? Count me in. Sanity brought me to The Mum Club… and it didn't disappoint.' Nazli discovered the club during a 2am Instagram scroll while feeding her baby. 'It felt like a sign… or at least a well-targeted ad.' She was hoping to 'meet some like-minded moms who get it: the chaos, the love, the sleep deprivation. Somewhere I could actually have an adult conversation that didn't involve the words 'potty' or 'snack,' and maybe just maybe finish a hot cup of coffee without reheating it three times.' Her first experience exceeded expectations. 'It was honestly lovely, the hosts were very friendly and welcoming. I met so many amazing women from all over the world who were going through similar things, trying to navigate motherhood in a new country, just like me. We talked nonstop from beginning to end, and it was exactly what I needed at the time, both mentally and emotionally. It felt like a reset button.' Overcoming barriers Before joining, Nazli faced significant isolation challenges. 'Dubai is dazzling, but it can be incredibly isolating without your village. Although I have my husband, who is my best friend and very supportive and hands-on, I still felt somewhat alone. In the early days, it felt like everyone had their crew except me. There were moments I'd go days without adult conversation - unless you count asking Siri how to remove crayon from walls.' The absence of extended family support proved particularly difficult. 'Not having grandparents pop by or aunties take over for an hour made everything feel heavier. I missed the 'drop-by support' and those impromptu family meals that feed your soul more than your stomach. Here, every bit of help had to be scheduled and sometimes paid for.' The practical challenges of going out with children in Dubai were substantial. 'Going out with four kids feels less like a casual outing and more like prepping for a full-on military operation - timings, snacks, backups, and all. While Dubai is quite kid-friendly, it's surprisingly hard to find cafes that truly cater to babies or toddlers. Most places offer colouring pages and a few crayons, but that only buys you about six minutes of peace.' Finding suitable activities proved equally challenging. 'In the beginning, it was really difficult. There just weren't many options that I knew of, and I often felt like I had to choose between what I needed and what was good for my baby.' Meeting other mothers presented its own obstacles. 'It was surprisingly hard. Unless you randomly bond with a mom over rogue raisins in a play area, it's awkward. Most meetups felt too formal or forced.' Barriers included 'time, energy, and the weird fear of rejection (yes, even as grownups). Sometimes you don't want to seem desperate or intrusive.' Life-changing impact The club transformed Nazli's experience in multiple ways. 'In more ways than I can count. It gave me a sense of belonging and reminded me that motherhood isn't meant to be done in isolation. Now I have friends who get it, who've cried over sleepless nights and laughed over exploding nappies. Emotionally, I feel lighter, more seen, and a lot more human.' The club also provided unexpected professional benefits. 'As a mompreneur, The Mum Club became more than just a support circle, it turned into a powerful networking space. I got to connect with my exact target audience (aka other amazing moms!) and even had the chance to showcase my small business, Peek-a-Boo AE, at one of the Breakfast Mornings. Coffee, connection, and a little brand visibility? Win-win-win.' The club's format proved ideal for busy mothers. 'The Mum Club has been the perfect balance. My baby's happy, stimulated, and safely entertained while I get to enjoy a proper breakfast, hot coffee (a rare luxury!), thoughtful goodie bags, and genuine conversations with a lovely group of moms. Sometimes there are expert talks too, which is like a bonus TED Talk in your morning. All that, for a small cost? Honestly… what more can you ask for? And I leave feeling refreshed, not depleted.' The organic nature of connections appealed to Nazli. 'The Mum Club made it organic like speed-dating for mom friends, but with better coffee and less pressure. The Mum Club gave me a space where everyone wanted to connect and it removed the awkwardness. Now, I've got a circle of strong, hilarious, supportive women who've become more like family.'

Deepika Nahata became an entrepreneur when she identified a pain point for many working households: doing the laundry. Partnering with a close relative, she launched WashOn Laundry as a family business in Dubai just before the Covid-19 pandemic. The company caters to individuals and businesses such as hotels, salons and gyms, and offers additional services such as shoe cleaning, bag restoration, cleaning of carpets, curtains and sofas. She credits running the business for five years with giving her financial independence and more autonomy in taking decisions on money matters. 'We initially thought we had taken the wrong decision, but consistency and attention to customers' requirements are the only secret to success,' says Ms Nahata, 36, who is from the north-eastern Indian state of Assam. WashOn, which is based in Dubai Investment Park, has now grown to 100 employees. Ms Nahata has been living in Dubai for the past 10 years and currently lives in Murooj Al Furjan with her husband, who is a software engineer, two sons aged 10 and 2, and her in-laws. She is a commerce graduate and holds a chartered accountant internship. Did wealth feature in your childhood? What did you learn from it? I was raised as a saver. Whenever I asked for pocket money, my mother would advise me to separate my needs from my wants. I didn't realise it then, but that simple lesson has changed the way I think about money. The habit of saving has helped me tide over emergencies. Saving and reinvesting our profits back into the laundry business have helped us to enhance our way of working by updating equipment and expanding our service offering. I only choose to spend on things that add value and offer me something in return. How did you first earn? The first income I earned was for my CA internship, making 5,000 Indian rupees ($57.8) per month in 2012. Following the internship, my employer shifted me to a full-time role on a monthly pay of 20,000 rupees. Any early financial jolts? I remember one time when I had started working in India and my parents travelled out of town. The washing machine in my house broke down and I had no money to pay the technician. I had to borrow money from my neighbour. That was a wake-up call because I had no savings and was spending all my income going out with friends. How do you grow your wealth? Through reinvesting profits back into my business. I am a smart spender and only invest in things that add value. I don't spend lavishly on parties or luxuries, instead I'm focused on doing things that add value to my working life. Have you been wise with money? Yes, it's been five years since we founded WashOn. The time, care and effort we have put into growing it are paying us back, not just in terms of revenue but also in terms of the experience and lessons from running the business. What has been your best investment? Building our business. We started the venture from scratch. But now we are able to provide employment to 100 people and sustain their livelihoods. That gives us pride and joy. Any cherished purchases? Only the new equipment that we have purchased to improve efficiencies and add value to our laundry business. Any financial advice for your younger self? Don't wait to be financially ready. Whenever you feel like starting a business or doing something on your own, start small but at least make a start. When my co-founder and I decided to start the business, we had a lot of doubts, but we didn't want to be financially dependent on someone else. There were many financial challenges as well and the prospect of taking risk. I am quite risk averse. But we decided to take the plunge. As it's a family business and we didn't want to take on loans, we tapped into family savings. We started with five to six employees and today we have more than 100 workers and there's been a huge increase in our business revenue. Any key financial milestones? Running the business has helped us gain financial independence and also given us decision-making powers. Earlier, we had to take our husbands' consent on important financial matters. Now, my co-founder and I are financially savvy and take crucial decisions ourselves. What luxuries are important to you? Spending quality time with family. What are your financial goals? I want to grow WashOn to a level where we can provide our services all over the UAE. Currently, we are focused on Dubai only.
