Bengaluru airport to get ‘Kalaloka' store showcasing Karnataka's iconic GI-tagged products

What is 'Kalaloka' store?
Spanning 130 square metres, the upcoming stall will bring together Karnataka's most iconic and Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged products under one roof. 'Kalaloka is designed to reflect Karnataka's heritage through six signature state-run products and 28 GI-tagged items, all curated in a visually appealing space,' said Patil, who holds the portfolio for Large and Medium Industries.
Among the featured products are Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Ltd's (KSDL) renowned sandalwood soap, Mysuru silk, Channapatna toys, Lidkar leather goods, and a wide range of handwoven and handicraft items. Filter coffee, another cultural staple of the state, will also be sold in the store.
To appeal to global travellers, the government is prioritising premium packaging, modern branding, and international-standard presentation. 'Kalaloka is not just a store, it is a curated showcase of Karnataka's craftsmanship and identity for the world to see,' Patil added.
A second Kalaloka stall is also on the cards, proposed for the International Lounge at the airport. The tender process for this outlet will begin shortly, he said. The Bengaluru International Airport authorities have extended support by offering the retail space at a 50% concession on rent, recognizing the initiative's cultural value.

Minister Patil chaired a review meeting with senior officials from the Visvesvaraya Trade Promotion Centre (VTPC) and the Department of Industries and Commerce to assess the store's progress, finalise product lists, and streamline the execution timeline.

Duty-free import policy has hit red gram farmers in State, says Minister
Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Priyank Kharge has said that the Central government's duty-free import policy for red gram has pushed Karnataka farmers into distress. Mr. Kharge has in a post on his X account said that Karnataka is the largest producer of red gram and 40% of this comes from Kalaburagi district. Red gram grown in Kalaburagi is renowned for its superior quality the world over. It has also received GI (Geographical Indication) tag. The Minister emphasized that 'the Narendra Modi-led government's import policy has put our farmers in hardship'. In 2024-25, though farmers across India produced 35 lakh tonnes of red gram, the Centre procured less than 10% of the total cultivation. Karnataka produced one lakh tonnes but farmers were forced to sell their produce at ₹6,000 per quintal much less than the minimum support price of ₹7,550. Even this year, red gram price has plummeted to ₹6,250 in the market against the minimum support price of ₹8,000 per quintal, he said. The Minister accused the Centre of choosing to flood the market with cheap, poor quality red gram from other countries abandoning local farmers. Since May 2021, red gram imports have been duty-free. This exemption has been extended until March 2026. In 2024-25, India imported more than 13 lakh tonnes of red gram and MoUs with countries like Mozambique have been signed to import additional two lakh tonnes, he said. Mr. Kharge noted that even though a Commission for Agriculture Costs and Prices report acknowledges that Karnataka demanded minimum support price of ₹16,548 per quintal, with cost of production amounting to ₹11,032 per quintal, the Central government has fixed minimum support price at ₹8,000 per quintal of red gram. It seems that the Union Ministers from Karnataka are more focused on spreading hatred than standing up to protect the interests of the State they represent, Mr. Kharge said.

This group will first visit Mumbai for high-level meetings with the government and trade bodies. As NDTV reported earlier, the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MACCIA) had formally raised concerns with Prada, urging the brand to credit the GI-tagged Kolhapuri heritage and explore a collaborative approach. In an exclusive statement to NDTV, MACCIA President Lalit Gandhi confirmed that Prada is now interested in launching a limited-edition Kolhapuri-inspired collection made in partnership with local artisans. "This is a major win for cultural recognition and ethical fashion," he said. Bengaluru back to cash? ‘No UPI, only cash', say vendors as they receive GST notices; ask customers to pay in notes
Once hailed as a digital payment leader, Bengaluru is switching to physical currency, replacing QR code stickers by printouts or scribbled notes that read, 'No UPI, only cash.' Small vendors who once favoured UPI payments are now urging customers to pay in cash, citing pressure from tax authorities. 'I do a business of about Rs 3,000 a day and live on the small profit I make. I can't accept payment by UPI anymore,' Shankar, a shopkeeper in Horamavu told ET. According to vendors, lawyers and accountants, thousands of unregistered small businesses, including street food stalls, push carts and corner shops, have received GST notices. Some face demands running into lakhs of rupees. Advocate Vinay K Sreenivasa, joint secretary of the Federation of Bengaluru Street Vendors Associations, said many vendors fear harassment by GST officers and possible eviction by civic authorities, prompting them to switch to cash. Under the current GST framework, businesses supplying goods must register and pay GST if their annual turnover exceeds Rs 40 lakh. For service providers, the threshold is Rs 20 lakh. The commercial taxes department stated that notices were issued only in cases where UPI transaction data since 2021-22 indicated turnover levels that require GST registration. It said such businesses must register, disclose their taxable turnover, and pay the applicable tax. However, HD Arun Kumar, former additional commissioner of commercial taxes in Karnataka, said GST authorities cannot simply quote random figures as turnover. 'Under the GST laws, the burden of proof is on officers. They must establish it before arriving at a tax demand, unlike in money laundering cases,' he said. Opposition BJP MLA S Suresh Kumar said he plans to write to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah seeking his intervention. A former GST field official pointed out that not all UPI credits reflect business income. 'Some of it would be informal loans or transfers from family and friends,' he said. 'Bengaluru may emerge as a test case. If the GST authorities can net a good chunk of revenue by tapping unregistered vendors, other states too will take the cue as every state is desperate for funds,' said chartered accountant Sreenivasan Ramakrishnan of Sreeni & Associates. 'Officials have zeroed in on chat vendors with high business in Mumbai. It's only a matter of time considering the huge potential tax base,' he added. Karnataka's tax officials are under pressure to meet a collection target of Rs 1.20 lakh crore for 2025-26.
