19-Year-Old Italian Cyclist Dies After Fall During Tour Of Aoste Valley-Mont Blanc
Privitera, who was a member of the Hagens Berman Jayco team, lost his life on Wednesday after an incident on the first stage of the race.
Italian junior cyclist Samuele Privitera has died at the age of 19 following a fall during this week's Tour of the Aoste Valley-Mont Blanc, the Italian Cycling Federation (FCI) announced on Thursday.
Privitera, a member of the Hagens Berman Jayco team, lost his life on Wednesday after an incident on the first stage of the race near the French and Swiss border in north-western Italy.
'The circumstances of the accident, which occurred on a downhill stretch of road in Pontey, 32 kilometres from the finish line, remain unclear," the FCI said.

'Privitera apparently hit a speed bump and lost control of his bike," it added.
The second stage of the race on Thursday was cancelled following Privitera's death, who was in his second season with the US-based team.
'Promptly assisted by the medical services after the incident, the young man was taken to the Parini Hospital in Aosta, where he sadly passed away," race organisers Societa Ciclistica Valdostana stated in FCI's announcement.
The race will resume with the third stage on Friday, from Pre Saint Didier to Col du Gran San Bernardo.
'This will be preceded by a moment of remembrance, and the initial section of the stage will be neutralised in memory of Samuele," the organisers added.
Last July, 25-year-old Norwegian Andre Drege died during the Tour of Austria, and in 2023 Swiss rider Gino Mader lost his life on the Tour of Switzerland at age 26.

Root surpasses Ponting, next in sight is all-time leading run-getter Tendulkar
Manchester, Jul 25 (PTI) The prolific Joe Root on Friday surpassed Australian legend Ricky Ponting's tally to become the second highest run-getter in the history of Test cricket and next in sight of the England batter is Indian icon Sachin Tendulkar who continues to head the list. On the third day of the fourth Test against India here, Root first leapfrogged legendary Indian Rahul Dravid and South African great Jacques Kallis' aggregate of runs in a space of eight balls and then went past Ponting by steering the ball behind point for a single as the Old Trafford crowd gave him a standing ovation. Ponting had scored 13378 runs in 168 matches at an average of 51.85, while Tendulkar continues to top the list with 15921 runs. It was apt that Ponting was in the commentary box when Root went past him. The 34-year-old Root began his Test career with a 73-run knock on debut during England's tour of India back in 2012 at Nagpur. 'Congrats, Joe Root. Magnificent," a delighted Ponting, doing commentary alongside Ravi Shastri, hailed the Yorkshire man. Root is playing in his 157th Test. How Many Tests Does Joe Root Need To Beat Sachin Tendulkar's Most Runs Record?
Joe Root has surpassed Dravid, Kallis, and Ponting to become the second-highest run-scorer in Test cricket. How many Tests does he need to go past Sachin Tendulkar? Joe Root is on a record-breaking spree and the biggest record left for him is India great Sachin Tendulkar's for most runs ever in Test cricket — 15,921. On Friday (July 25), he became the second-highest run-scorer in the format with 13380 runs, going past Rahul Dravid (13288), Jaques Kallis (13289), and Ricky Ponting (13378) in the same innings of 121* (201), at Tea in the fourth Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test at Old Trafford. The question begs itself — can Root be the one to break Tendulkar's currently 12-year-old record, which many thought would never be touched, which Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson and several other greats couldn't come even close to? If he can, how many Tests would he need to do so and etch him at the top of the world? It's difficult to say exactly, but Root has averaged 89 since the start of 2024, and according to CricViz (a sports analytics company), if he maintains that rate, he will need only 29 more Tests to pass Tendulkar and become the format's leading run scorer. Considering England play at least a dozen Tests every year (they played 17 in 2024), he'd need about two and a half years to reach the feat. To put how quick Root is in context, the 17 Tests in 2024 yielded 1556 runs for him. Of course, this is the best-case scenario. Apart from the difficulty of maintaining a purple patch like this for that significant period, Root would also need to keep himself fit. He's 34 and will turn 35 this December, and though he's fit, it'll become progressively arduous for him to maintain fitness, just like Tendulkar, Kallis, and Ponting also faced. However, Tendulkar played 200 Tests, and Ponting 168, while Root is still at 157. Ponting's prediction for Root's records Earlier in the day, Ponting had tipped Root to break his record. He was also asked about the Englishman's chances of going past Tendulkar. 'There's still a fair bit to go," Ponting told ICC. 'What is he, 35? Doesn't look like his passion for the game is going anywhere. His run-scoring passion has probably gone up over the years. Can he chase down Sachin? Let's see. He might as well do that," he added.
