Sources say man killed in targeted Burlington shooting had ties to Hells Angels

Halton police have released a photo of a vehicle of interest in a targeted shooting that left one man dead in the parking lot of a Burlington restaurant Tuesday night.
A man in his 50s was killed in the shooting around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday outside the Mandarin Restaurant at 1881 Fairview St., near Brant Street, police said. The victim was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Halton major crime unit detectives are looking for a grey, newer model Honda Civic, with tinted windows and black, police said in an update Wednesday afternoon.
Photos from the scene showed a black GMC with blown-out back passenger windows. Evidence tags were on the ground just outside the luxury pickup truck.
Halton police declined to answer questions by The Spectator, including about any connection to organized crime. Sources not authorized to comment on the record say the victim, whose name has not been released, was tied to the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club.
'Our investigation is currently ongoing, and we don't have any further information we are able to provide at this time outside of what was shared in the earlier media release,' Const. Jeff Dillon said in an email to The Spectator. 'We'll be looking to provide more information as soon as we can.'
As of Wednesday afternoon, the scene was cleared and businesses were back open in the plaza.
A staff member at the Mandarin — who did not provide their name — said the shooting took place when there were patrons in the restaurant. The manager declined to comment to The Spectator.
The plaza has surveillance video that has been collected by police.
Police are asking anyone with dash-camera footage from the area of Fairview and Brant streets between 4 and 10 p.m. to contact police.
Anyone with information is asked to call the major crime bureau at 905-825-4776.

Men accused of staging phony car crashes for insurance payouts: Queens DA

Editor's note: The video above aired in a previous newscast. QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) – Two Brooklyn men are accused of deliberately causing three car collisions, including a Belt Parkway crash that was caught on camera, and then seeking insurance payouts. Prosecutors alleged that 53-year-old Jaime Huiracocha allegedly planned the crashes and lured people to participate with the promises of cash payouts, while 34-year-old Victor Murillo was accused of driving the car used in the collisions. More Local News Huiracocha allegedly met with a group inside an East New York medical clinic and instructed them on how to stage a car crash on Oct. 16, 2024, according to prosecutors. Prosecutors alleged that the participants were then told to send photos of the collision to a woman. The group then met up near the Belt Parkway, with a silver Honda Civic and a red Kia Sport in tow, according to prosecutors. Prosecutors alleged that the participants were told by Huiracocha what vehicles to sit in and the drivers were given headphones to communicate with one another. Murillo was asked to drive the Honda Civic, according to prosecutors. Prosecutors alleged that the other participants were given a black plastic tarp and told to cover the back window after the crash so Murillo could swap seats with a passenger without being seen. All of the cars then got on the Belt Parkway around 11 a.m. and the group allegedly picked out Asphia Natasha's vehicle for the staged collision, according to prosecutors. What they didn't know, prosecutors alleged, was that Natasha's vehicle had both front and rear dashboard cameras. The Honda Civic would then cut in front of Natasha, forcing her to stop short, according to prosecutors. Prosecutors said the Honda then backed up into Natasha's car. Passengers in the Honda then held up the plastic tarp on the back window and Murillo and someone else in the car allegedly swapped seats, according to prosecutors. Prosecutors alleged that four people got out of the Honda, including a woman who exited the driver's seat and a man who identified himself as Maikel Martinez. Martinez claimed that the woman was his wife, according to prosecutors. Prosecutors alleged that the Kia, which was following Natasha's car, pulled up to the crash. Murillo is accused of getting out of the Honda and into the Kia, which then fled the scene, according to prosecutors. Prosecutors alleged that Huiracocha and Murillo staged two other crashes that happened before the Belt Parkway collision on Oct. 3 and Aug. 24. Allstate Insurance Company said it paid out more than $82,000 for injury claims relating to those two crashes, and that it received a claim for damages to the Honda for the Oct. 16 collision. More: Latest News from Around the Tri-State Martinez was charged back in November and his case is pending, according to prosecutors. Huiracocha and Murillo were arraigned Wednesday on charges including insurance fraud, staging a motor vehicle accident, criminal mischief, conspiracy, reckless endangerment, grand larceny and attempted grand larceny. Man charged with DUI, reckless homicide in crash that killed 5-year-old son in Lake County, Illinois

A man has been charged with driving under the influence of cannabis in a crash that killed his 5-year-old son and critically injured his 2-year-old son last year in Beach Park, Illinois. Lake County Sheriff's officials said 35-year-old Steven McKnight Jr., of Zion, has been charged with two counts of aggravated DUI causing death, four counts of aggravated DUI causing bodily harm, one count of reckless homicide, and one count of endangering the life of a child causing death. On Nov. 26, McKnight was driving south on Green Bay Road in a Chevrolet Malibu, just north of Hart Street in Beach Park, and illegally passing other cars by driving in the northbound lanes, when he crashed head-on into an oncoming GMC Sierra, according to sheriff's police. Investigators determined McKnight was holding his 2-year-old son in his lap at the time of the crash. His 5-year-old son, Sy'mere McKnight, was in the back seat, and also was not wearing any sort of restraining device. Sy'mere was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy determined he died of blunt force injuries from the crash. McKnight was seriously injured, and his 2-year-old son was critically injured, but survived. The driver of the GMC was seriously injured, and was taken to the hospital for treatment. Following an investigation into the cause of the crash, police determined McKnight was driving under the influence of cannabis at the time of the crash. He was arrested at his home in Zion on Thursday. According to Lake County court records, McKnight was ordered held in jail while he awaits trial. He is due back in court on Aug. 7.

‘Significant spike' in impaired driving includes six Hamilton deaths

Hamilton police are warning about a concerning rise in impaired driving, including three fatal drunk-driving crashes that have killed six people — among them a 10-year-old girl — since June. On Friday, police announced they have laid impaired and dangerous driving charges in one of the fatal collisions — a three-vehicle crash on June 1 on Upper Centennial Parkway that killed two people. A 32-year-old Hamilton man is accused of drunk driving, driving double the 70 kilometre per hour limit, and driving an unsafe vehicle. The 'significant spike' in impaired driving cases includes a 25 per cent increase in May over 2024, and a 53 per cent increase in June compared to the same month last year, said Const. Trevor McKenna. Overall impaired driving offences are up 11 per cent over 2024. So far this year police have laid 369 impaired charges, with 216 people charged, he said. On June 1, shortly after midnight, police were called to a three-vehicle crash on Upper Centennial Parkway between Mud Street East and Green Mountain Road. The investigation revealed two pickup trucks were southbound when one — a 2014 Ford F-150 — hit the other and then crossed into northbound lanes where it struck a 2015 Kia Sorento head-on. The driver and passenger in the car were tragically killed, police said. They were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the F-150 was treated in hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Following an investigation by the collision reconstruction unit, he was arrested Thursday. Nemanja Trivanovic, 32, from Hamilton is charged criminally with two counts of dangerous driving causing death, two counts of impaired driving causing death and two counts of having over 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood causing death. He faces further charges, under the Highway Traffic Act, of stunt driving, speeding 140 km/h in a 70 zone, having defective brakes and operating an unsafe vehicle. The families of the victims are requesting privacy as they grieve, police said in a release Friday. A little over a month after that fatal crash, 30-year-old Julia Smith and her 10-year-old daughter Grace were killed after their car was struck head-on by a pickup truck. Police allege the pickup driver was trying to pass another vehicle on Trinity Church Road on July 6. Grace died at the scene and her mom died in hospital just over a week later. Two men, also in the Honda Civic they were travelling in, were hurt in the crash. McKenna said investigators have identified impaired driving as a factor in the crash. That investigation is ongoing and charges have not yet been laid. Impaired driving was also allegedly behind fiery crash at the top of the Claremont Access that killed two people on June 22 around 3 a.m. In that case, police believe the Chevrolet was southbound on the access, when it left the road, hit the stone wall near Southam Park and caught fire. Both the driver and the passenger were pronounced dead at the scene and no other vehicles were involved. In response to the troubling increase in cases, police are reminding the public there are always alternatives to getting behind the wheel while impaired. These include designating a sober driver, calling a taxi or ride share, and using public transit. 'Plan ahead, your life and others depend on it,' police said. Police say they are also increasing RIDE lanes on the road, and on the water through the marine unit. If you suspect someone is driving impaired, call 911.
