Ace Bailey fuels Utah Jazz holdout speculation following NBA Draft surprise

Daily Mail7 hours ago

Ace Bailey has fueled speculation that he will holdout from the Utah Jazz, with the ex-Rutgers star reportedly yet to report to his new team.
Bailey did not work out for Utah ahead of the draft, and the franchise was not one of his 'preferred destinations', ESPN's Jonathan Givony reported previously. Bailey later said on draft night that he had 'no idea' Utah were interested in him at No. 5.
On Friday, Givony's ESPN colleague Brian Windhorst revealed on SportsCenter that Bailey has had 'minimal contact' with the Jazz, who expect him to be in Salt Lake City by the start of summer league training camp on Monday.
Meanwhile, Bailey's new teammate and fellow-first round pick Walter Clayton Jr. has already reported to the Jazz, Windhorst said on Thursday night.
'The Jazz have said [Bailey not reporting yet] is not an issue, they allow their new players to go home,' Windhorst said on the late-night edition of SportsCenter with Scott Van Pelt.
'But he will be expected to be there on Monday when their summer league training camp begins. So, let's see.'
Brian Windhorst: "Danny Ainge & his son, Austin, are not gonna bend here. They are not gonna get pushed around."
SVP: "This seems kinda ridiculous to me. [Ace Bailey is] good, but he's not this good. To be trying to dictate to people don't take me. Like, what the hell is that?" https://t.co/JgcF4f5cpl pic.twitter.com/Mkr5eyasrL

Windhorst added that Utah Jazz CEO and his son, newly-hired president of basketball operations Austin, 'are not gonna bend' when it comes to a potential holdout from Bailey.
'They are not gonna get pushed around... the idea that they're gonna pressure the Jazz into something, I don't think will be successful for Ace Bailey and his operation. But let's see how the next 72 hours plays out,' he said.
Prior to the draft, Givony reported that Bailey's agent, Omar Cooper, had told at least one team in the top five that Bailey would not report if they decided to draft him. It's unclear if that team was the Jazz.
Bailey was reportedly trying to engineer himself being drafted by the Wizards, Pelicans or Nets, who all drafted after the Jazz.
Amid the latest reports regarding Bailey, a representative from his agency insisted on Friday that he's 'thrilled' to be going to Utah.
Bailey's agent Cooper is not certified by the NBAPA, so the forward is also being represented by GSE Worldwide.
'Obviously it's an honor to be selected in the top 5 of the NBA Draft, and we think he can do a lot of great things out there, GSE president Andrew Witlieb told FOS Today.
'He certainly should get a ton of playing time and he'll have a lot of chances to show what he can do, so we think it's a great situation for him basketball wise.'
Wittlieb did note that the pre-draft process, in which Bailey chose not to work out with any teams, was 'led' by Cooper.
'Omar really focused more on fit than going third in the draft kind of thing,' Wittlieb said.
While the Jazz did not get the chance to workout Bailey in person, they badly need an injection of talent on their roster after winning just 17 games last year.
They'll hope that changes with Clayton Jr. and (hopefully) Bailey on the roster.

Patrick Bailey's 2-run triple helps Giants top White Sox

June 28 - Wilmer Flores doubled home a run, Patrick Bailey tripled in a pair and the San Francisco Giants opened a 10-game trip with a 3-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Friday night. Landen Roupp (6-5) and four relievers helped the Giants rebound from a three-game home sweep at the hands of the Miami Marlins. San Francisco earned just its fourth victory in the past 12 contests. After the White Sox took advantage of a San Francisco error to go up 1-0 in the first, the Giants did the rest of the scoring, beginning with Flores' two-out double in the third. The hit scored Bailey, who had led off the inning with a walk issued by Chicago starter Aaron Civale. The RBI was Flores' team-leading 55th of the season. That was the only run allowed by Civale in four laborious innings. He needed 80 pitches to get 12 outs, during which he allowed three hits and four walks. He struck out four. The Giants broke the tie against reliever Tyler Alexander (4-8) in the sixth. Willy Adames walked and Christian Koss singled with one out to set the stage for Bailey, who cleared the bases with his triple to right field. The triple was just the fourth of Bailey's three major league seasons, a career-best second this year. Roupp faced just two batters -- retiring one -- in the last of the sixth before turning the ball over to the bullpen. He wound up allowing seven hits, two walks and the one unearned run. He struck out four. Chicago's run was the product of an error by Adames, the Giants' shortstop, that allowed Chase Meidroth to scamper home from second base. Giants reliever Ryan Walker completed the sixth without incident. Randy Rodriguez and Tyler Rogers followed with a hitless inning apiece, and Camilo Doval threw a 1-2-3 ninth for his 13th save. In all, the San Francisco relievers retired 11 of the 12 batters they faced. Koss was the only Giant with two hits -- a couple of singles. Seven players had one hit -- each a single -- for the White Sox, who had won three of their previous six games after opening the season 23-52. Chicago was held to one or no runs for the 23rd time this year. --Field Level Media

Nick Martinez takes no-hitter into ninth as Reds beat Padres

June 28 - Nick Martinez carried a no-hit bid into the ninth inning and Spencer Steer homered in each of his first three at-bats to lift the host Cincinnati Reds to an 8-1 victory over the San Diego Padres on Friday. After allowing a two-out walk to Jackson Merrill in the first, Martinez (5-8) retired the next 22 batters before issuing a free pass to Trenton Brooks leading off the ninth. Elias Diaz ended the no-hit bid with a double into the left-center field gap, bringing a close to Martinez's night after a career high-tying 112 pitches. Taylor Rogers entered the game and yielded two walks -- including one to Bryce Johnson with the bases loaded for a run that was charged to Martinez. Rogers, however, struck out two batters in one inning to send the Reds to their fourth win in the last five games. Martinez, who allowed one run on one hit with six strikeouts, was attempting to record Cincinnati's first no-hitter since Wade Miley accomplished the feat against the Cleveland Guardians on May 7, 2021. Martinez, a 34-year-old veteran, was back to a starting role after making his prior two appearances in relief. In his four starts prior to his brief bullpen stint, he went 1-3 with an 8.35 ERA. Cincinnati scratched for a pair of runs in the first inning before Steer flexed his muscles to put the game out of reach. Steer deposited a 2-2 fastball from Dylan Cease (3-7) over the wall in right-center in the second and led off the fourth by sending a 1-0 slider over the wall in left-center. Austin Hays, making his return from the 10-day injured list due to a left foot contusion, ripped an RBI double and scored a run in the fifth before Steer lined a 1-1 fastball from Yuki Matsui into the left-field seats. The multi-homer performance was the second for Steer, who went deep twice in the Reds' 6-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Aug. 12, 2024. He has nine homers this season. Gavin Lux had an RBI single, Matt McLain scored on a passed ball and Elly De La Cruz had two hits for the Reds. Cease permitted four runs (three earned) on five hits in four innings. TJ Friedl walked, advanced to third on an error by right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. and scored on a groundout to open the scoring in the first. McLain scored on a passed ball by catcher Martin Maldonado to stake Cincinnati to a 2-0 lead. --Field Level Media

David Festa, Twins shut down AL-best Tigers

June 28 - Byron Buxton hit a solo homer and David Festa pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings as the visiting Minnesota Twins downed the Detroit Tigers 4-1 on Friday night. Brooks Lee drove in two runs, Willi Castro scored a run and knocked in another and Buxton scored two runs as the Twins won their third straight following a five-game losing streak. Festa (2-2) allowed just two hits and struck out six Tigers, who have the best record in the American League. Jhoan Duran notched his 12th save by getting the last three outs in the opener of a three-game set. Gleyber Torres had two hits and drove in the lone Tigers run. Starter Sawyer Gipson-Long (0-1) yielded three runs on four hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings while recording five strikeouts. The Tigers had a threat in the second. Spencer Torkelson was hit by a pitch and Dillon Dingler had a two-out single. Parker Meadows was retired on a check-swing comebacker to Festa. Minnesota stranded two runners in the third, then broke through in the fourth. Matt Wallner slashed a two-out double before Lee doubled to right for the first run of the contest. The Twins made it 2-0 the next inning on Buxton's two-out homer to left which traveled an estimated 425 feet. Minnesota tacked on a run in the sixth. Castro walked, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. After Ty France walked with one out, Lee singled to center to score Castro. Minnesota took a 4-0 lead in the seventh. Buxton walked, stole second and moved to third on a groundout. He scored on Castro's sacrifice bunt. Detroit stranded two runners in the seventh, then got on the scoreboard in the eighth. Colt Keith tripled with one out and scored on Torres' RBI single. Zach McKinstry's single put runners on the corners. McKinstry stole second, but reliever Griffin Jax responded by striking out Riley Greene and Torkelson to end the inning. --Field Level Media
