Florida man kills 3 in I-95 crash after taunting state trooper, slamming into tow truck: officials
A Florida man has been indicted for murder after a high-speed chase that ended in a deadly crash on an Interstate 95 off-ramp.
Officials say the man taunted state troopers before then slamming into a tow truck and killing three people, as well as seriously injuring another.
Vernon J. Hodges, 41, had a history of previous traffic convictions and license revocations, including for DUI, refusing to submit to breath or blood tests and for being a habitual traffic offender.
BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. - A Florida man has been indicted for murder after a high-speed chase that ended in a deadly crash on an Interstate 95 off-ramp. Officials say the man taunted state troopers before then slamming into a tow truck and killing three people, as well as seriously injuring another.
In total, a Brevard County Jury has indicted 41-year-old Vernon J. Hodges on 17 charges.
What we know
Authorities said Hodges had a history of previous traffic convictions and license revocations, including for DUI, refusing to submit to breath or blood tests and for being a habitual traffic offender.
Blood tests taken at the hospital after the crash showed he had a blood alcohol content of .147 above the legal limit.
The jury has indicted Hodges on 17 charges:
3 counts of first-degree felony murder, a capital felony punishable by life imprisonment or the death penalty
Aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude, causing death
3 counts of DUI manslaughter
3 counts of vehicular homicide
3 counts of driving without a driver's license or while license suspended or revoked, causing death
Driving with a suspended or revoked license, causing death
Driving with a suspended or revoked license, causing serious injury
DUI with serious bodily injury
Driving under the influence and causing damage
The backstory
An official news release from the State Attorney of the 18th Judicial Circuit states the deadly incident started at about 8:30 a.m. on March 28.
Officials say Hodges, of Sebastian, was driving a Mercedes-Benz C300 sedan northbound when he passed a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) sergeant at an estimated 100 mph. Hodges was reported to then make gestures and wave out the window at the trooper, who activated his flashing lights and siren.
Authorities said Hodges turned down the exit ramp at State Road 520 and swerved onto the right shoulder to avoid cars. FHP said the Mercedes then slammed into the back of a tow truck, shredding the car, and spun across the roadway.
Investigators said tow truck driver John Youmara was under the rear axle of the truck, preparing it to be towed by him, and became trapped beneath the wreckage.

Youmara was hospitalized with serious injuries and is recovering.
Meanwhile, Hodges was hospitalized and later arrested at Holmes Regional Medical Center.

Our camera car crosses over at a median break and goes wrong way with the fleeing suspects. His colleagues follow and while a few more squeeze past, they're able to blockade the road, trapping quite a few people who were fleeing. But two drivers decide to ram the FHP cruisers. They weren't able to escape and were arrested. Instead of just facing charges related to the takeover and fleeing law enforcement, they're also getting aggravated assault charges. These kids need to learn and apparently the won't listen unless they have to learn the hard way. In Florida as well as many other states, street takeover events have become a real problem law enforcement has to address. Last year, a new law in Florida has allowed police and prosecutors to crack down on the illegal gatherings more than ever before. What this means is the people you see get busted in this video are facing some serious consequences, not just a slap on the wrist. That might have factored into their being so desperate to get away, although we've seen that type of behavior in California where takeover participants often get a slap on the wrist, if that. 2 shot at Arby's on U.S. 90 in Lake City, 3 taken into custody, Columbia deputies say
Two people were shot inside an Arby's restaurant on U.S. 90 West in Lake City on Thursday, leading to a police pursuit of the suspects, the Columbia County Sheriff's Office said. Deputies were dispatched to the restaurant around 11:30 a.m. and found two people inside who had been shot. Witnesses provided information about the suspects and their vehicle, which was soon located by a deputy, CCSO said. The suspect vehicle, which had three people inside, drove northbound onto Interstate 75 from U.S. 90 West, prompting a pursuit by CCSO deputies and the Florida Highway Patrol. The chase ended near mile marker 437 on I-75 Northbound after an FHP Trooper executed a PIT (pursuit intervention technique) maneuver, leading to the apprehension of the suspects without further incident. Pensacola man sentenced for machine gun, drug trafficking after car chase
A Pensacola man who led Florida Highway Patrol troopers on a high-speed chase down Pensacola Boulevard in 2023 has been sentenced to spend nine years in a federal prison. The U.S. Attorney's Office announced June 24 that 21-year-old Antoine Booker was given the nine-year sentence for possessing a loaded gun and trafficking "large amounts" of marijuana. "The public should rest assured that law enforcement will not stand for armed drug traffickers endangering citizens in our streets," said U.S. Attorney John Heekin. "If you possess a machinegun to protect your drug trafficking operations, you should know that federal prison awaits you." FHP attempted to pull over Booker in December 2023 for driving a rental car with too much tint, but when the trooper attempted the traffic stop, Booker then fled. "Suddenly, the driver rapidly accelerated and swerved left towards the K-9 Trooper's vehicle who just arrived to assist with the traffic stop," the 2023 FHP report says. "The driver then swerved right into a Circle K gas station located at 7950 Pensacola Boulevard." Booker then allegedly led troopers on a brief chase before he flipped his own car. Following his arrest, Booker was charged in state court for fleeing law enforcement, possession of a machine gun and other drug related offenses. However, the Office of the State Attorney dropped those charges in February 2024 after he was federally indicted on the same charges. "Had it not been for law enforcement's training and determination, this armed suspect would have undoubtedly wreaked havoc in Northwest Florida," said ATF Special Agent in Charge Kirk Howard. "We are proud of the partnerships we've built with Florida Highway Patrol, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Escambia County Sheriff's Office and our federal prosecutors."
