Sabalenka sees off Bouzkova to reach Wimbledon third round

LONDON - Aryna Sabalenka was given a tougher workout than she would have wanted before the top seed dismantled Czech Marie Bouzkova 7-6(4) 6-4 to advance to the third round of Wimbledon on Wednesday.
As the sun played hide-and-seek with the grey clouds that hovered over Centre Court, Sabalenka kept knocking on the door in the opening set, but was shut out by Bouzkova each time and dropped serve with a double fault in the 11th game.
A frustrated Sabalenka let out a scream when she failed to convert a breakpoint in the next game, but the 27-year-old quickly composed herself to force a tiebreak with a backhand winner on her next opportunity.
"That was a tough moment in the match," Sabalenka said.
"I was just trying to put the ball back on that side and then hope that I'd be able to break her back, because until that point, my returns weren't great enough to break her serve and I'm really glad everything clicked.
"I felt a bit better in that moment and I think that's why I was able to win the tiebreak and get the win in straight sets."
The three-times Grand Slam champion from Belarus, who has a golden opportunity to win her first Wimbledon title with several seeds losing early, led the tiebreak after a couple of errors from Bouzkova and wrapped up the set with a forehand winner.

An untimely error at the net by Bouzkova gifted Sabalenka the break in the fifth game of the second set and there was no looking back from there with the twice semi-finalist holding firm to close out the win.
Sabalenka said she was focused on avoiding the trapdoor after second seed Coco Gauff, number three Jessica Pegula, fifth seed Zheng Qinwen and number nine Paula Badosa were all sent packing in the first round.
"Honestly, it's very sad to see so many top players losing in the first round, but you're better off focusing on yourself and staying away from the results," Sabalenka added.
"Of course, you're going to know the overall picture, but it's better just to take it one step at a time and do your best every time you're out here competing.
"I hope there are no more upsets in this tournament."
Up next for Sabalenka is either local favourite Emma Raducanu or 2023 champion Marketa Vondrousova. REUTERS

SEOUL - A North Korean who crossed the heavily fortified land border into the South has been detained and taken into custody, Seoul's military said on July 4. The North Korean managed to cross the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) in the midwestern part of the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) on July 3, Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said. The MDL is the de-facto border , which runs through the middle of the DMZ - the border area separating the two Koreas, which is one of the most heavily mined places on earth. 'The military identified the individual near the MDL, conducted tracking and surveillance,' the JCS said in a statement. It then 'successfully carried out a standard guiding operation to secure custody,' it added. Seoul's military said 'relevant authorities' will investigate the detailed circumstances of the incident. North Koreans are typically handed over to Seoul's intelligence agency for screening when they arrive in the South. The incident comes after a wooden boat carrying four North Koreans drifted into waters south of the de-facto maritime border in May. Another North Korean defected to the South across the de-facto border in the Yellow Sea in 2024, arriving on Gyodong island off the peninsula's west coast near the border between the Koreas. Tens of thousands of North Koreans have fled to South Korea since the peninsula was divided by war in the 1950s, with most going overland to neighbouring China first, then entering a third country such as Thailand before finally making it to the South. Defections across the land border that divides the peninsula are rare. The number of successful escapes dropped significantly from 2020 after the North sealed its borders - purportedly with shoot-on-sight orders along the land frontier with China - to prevent the spread of Covid-19. South Korea's President Lee Jae Myung, who took office in June, has vowed a more dovish approach towards Pyongyang compared with his hawkish predecessor Yoon Suk Yeol. Russian drones swarm Kyiv for hours into the early hours, World News
Russian drones swarmed the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv into the early hours of Friday morning (July 4), officials said, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage. More than four hours into an air raid alert, Tymur Tkachenko, head of the capital's military administration, noted drone attacks at 13 locations in five districts on both sides of the Dnipro River bisecting the city. Tkachenko said many of the targets had been dwellings. Reuters witnesses heard strings of explosions and constant barrages of fire as air defence units tried to down the drones. "At the same time, there is no end to the attacks," Tkachenko wrote on Telegram. "There are a great many targets over Kyiv. We are working on Russian drones in all districts." Two fires had broken out in Svyatoshynskyi district in the west of the city and Tkachenko said injuries were likely. Drones triggered two fires on a roof and in a courtyard in buildings in adjacent Solomanskyi district. Tkachenko and Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitscho had earlier reported a fire on the roof of a 16-storey apartment building in a northern suburb.
