Ex-Premier League boss told 'f*** you' by own player in angry Club World Cup row

Former Premier League manager Bruno Lage was remarkably told 'f*** you' by his own player during Benfica's 6-0 win over Auckland City in the Club World Cup. The ex-Wolves was involved in an intense spat with midfielder Orkun Kokcu after he decided to replace the Turkish star with the Portuguese side already 2-0.
Goals from Angel Di Maria and Vangelis Pavlidis saw Benfica cruising and Lage opted to replace Kokcu with ex-Bayern Munich and Swansea ace Renato Sanches. Kokcu did not take kindly to the decision and made as much clear as he departed the pitch.
The 24-year-old was furious as he made his way to the sidelines and refused to shake the hand of his manager. According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, Kokcu shouted 'f*** you' at Lage as the row escalated with the Benfica star taking his seat among team-mates, while Lage fired back by telling his player to be quiet by shushing him.
Lage was soon allowed a moment of smugness as Portugal international Sanches got on the scoresheet to add a third goal for Benfica, soon after his introduction. The 49-year-old coach made sure that Kokcu knew his decision paid off.
The boss, in his second spell with Benfica, covered his mouth to share a few words with his player. It is suggested the 49-year-old told Kokcu that he had a better feel for game when deciding to make the substitution.
The words did not land well however as Kokcu rose to his feet and vented his anger. The midfielder forcefully pointed towards his manager and was visibly furious.
Kokcu needed to be restrained by team-mate Kerem Akturkoglu as Lage was again put his finger to his mouth. Unsurprisingly, Lage was asked about the situation following the game.
"Orkun Kokcu wanted to win and score more goals, but we decided that Renato should come on," he explained. "Regardless of the players' form, I make the decisions.
"In the last game, we started with Renato, and Kokcu came on later and helped us. That's how it was today, too."
"I saw the behaviour of a consistently professional athlete. That was a unique experience," he added.
"He has always behaved very well both on and off the field. He has the desire to help the team.
"I make the decisions I have to make, no matter who it is. I've proven that many times. I look at the player's current situation and make my decisions calmly."

His arrival would bolster a squad full of ex-Premier League talent, including Arsenal and Liverpool star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and ex- Spurs disappointment Gedson Fernandes. 2 The deal would spark Besiktas' quiet transfer window into life, with their only other business so far being making last year's loan signings of Felix Uduokhai and Joao Mario permanent. Roma appointed former Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini as they're new manager earlier this month, throwing Abraham's future into uncertainty. Abraham would be the latest in a series of Roma departures, with midfielder Enzo le Fee, full-back Samuel Dahl and winger Nicola Zalewski all completing permanent moves away from the club this summer. Rangers have 'concrete' interest in winger Samuel Ballet
The 24-year-old spent last season on loan at FC Zurich from Como and the Swiss side would like him back for the next campaign. But, according to Blick Sport, their chances are dwindling due to "concrete" interest from several clubs, including Gers. Rangers, Norwich City, and Turkish outfit Trabzonspor are those clubs and all are said to be "further ahead" in the queue than Zurich. If a deal does materialise, it could be either a permanent transfer immediately or a loan with an option to buy. Ballet is currently due to join back up with the Como squad for pre-season training on July 10 and while a stay there is not impossible, it's more likely he will have a new club. The former Switzerland under-20s star started out with Young Boys in his homeland before heading for Winterthur after a loan was made permanent. From there he moved to Como in 2023 but only made three competitive appearances for the Italians before the loan back to Switzerland with Zurich. He has a contract with the Serie A side until 2027.

U.S. beats Costa Rica in thrilling penalty shootout to advance in Gold Cup
MINNEAPOLIS — Damion Downs scored in the sixth round of a shootout after three saves by Matt Freese, sending the U.S. to the semifinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup with a 4-3 penalty-kicks win over Costa Rica after a 2-2 tie on Sunday night. The U.S. advanced to a Wednesday matchup in St. Louis against Guatemala, which upset Canada on penalty kicks in the opener of the quarterfinal doubleheader. "They showed today great character," U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino said. Freese batted away shootout attempts by Juan Pablo Vargas, Francisco Calvo and Andy Rojas. "Penalties are my thing," Freese said. "On the plane ride over here to Minnesota I was studying the penalties and I've been studying them all week." Mexico plays Honduras in the other semifinal on Wednesday in Santa Clara, California. The championship is in Houston on July 6. The U.S. has reached the semifinals in 17 of 18 Gold Cups, including 13 straight since a penalty-kicks loss to Colombia in a 2000 quarterfinal. Diego Luna and Max Arfsten scored in regulation for the No. 16 U.S., which faced its highest-ranked opponent of the tournament in Costa Rica (54th) after breezing through the group stage with an 8-1 goal differential.
