K-DISC pitches tech and innovation to help neurodivergent people

KOCHI: As a state with more than seven lakh differently abled people, it is high time Kerala leveraged technology and community participation to create an ecosystem catering to their needs. And that is precisely what the STRIDE (Social Technology and Research for Inclusive Design Excellence) project aims to do.
As part of the programme designed by the Kerala Development and Innovation Strategic Council (K-DISC), STRIDE Innovation Centres will be set up at engineering colleges under APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU) and other universities. Another feature will be the setting up of a first-of-its-kind Makerspaces at select BUDS schools operated by Kudumbashree and the local self-government department (LSGD).
'The plan is to create India's first inclusive innovation ecosystem, and specifically, assistive/adaptive technology in 2026,' Robin Tommy, executive director of K-DISC's Social Enterprises and Inclusion (SEI), tells TNIE.
'The project aims to make Kerala a hub for social innovation, with a strong emphasis on community-driven solutions.'
Launched in November 2024 on an experimental basis, the project will have four arms -- STRIDE Innovation Centres, STRIDE Makerspaces, STRIDE Hub, and STRIDE Network.
'The initiative envisions to make these neurodivergent individuals self-sufficient. They don't need our empathy or sympathy. What they need is a way to earn a livelihood once they turn 18. They need hand-holding,' he says.
Explaining more about STRIDE, Robin says, 'At the innovation centres, the students will be encouraged to come up with designs that help improve the lives of their special needs brethren.' He stresses the innovation happening at these centres will be human-centric. K-DISC had conducted a Designathon, where more than 300 teams from colleges across the country presented their ideas. These ideas were arrived at through interactions with the differently abled persons, he says.

Kia Carens Clavis EV To Launch Tomorrow; Here's What We Know So Far

Kia recently launched the Carens Clavis in India at a starting price of Rs 11.50 lakh (ex-showroom). The brand is gearing up for the launch of the electrified iteration of the MPV, called the Kia Carens Clavis EV. Also, the brand introduced an EV charging ecosystem to address common concerns associated with EV ownership. Kia India has developed the K-Charge platform, seamlessly integrated within the MyKia app, offering access to a fast-growing network of over 11,000 charging points across India in collaboration with 18 leading Charge Point Operators (CPOs). This spans both urban and highway routes, supporting daily commutes and long-distance travel alike. However, the Kia Carens Clavis EV will feature a 51.4 kWh battery pack capable of delivering a range of up to 490 km. This battery pack has also been employed on the Hyundai Creta Electric, making it reasonable for Kia to provide a smaller 42 kWh battery similar to that of the Hyundai EV. Meanwhile, the electric version of the Kia Carens Clavis retains most of the design and exterior elements from the ICE sibling. However, it features a bunch of EV-specific elements like a closed-off grille, a charging flat, which is a part of the nose with a slim upper air inlet above the nameplate, and more. Kia Carens Clavis EV interior Also, the interior of the Clavis resembles details from the Carens Clavis (ICE). However, the center console has been redesigned. Also, in the place where the ICE version has a gear lever, the EV version seems to have a storage bin. On the side of tech, there is a dual-screen layout similar to the ICE version. While the full details of the interior are still under wraps, the Carens Clavis EV will get dual-zone climate control, a wireless charger, a two-spoke steering wheel, Level 2 ADAS, a full LED lighting package, and more.

Toyota Glanza Prestige Edition launched: Here's what it gets

Toyota Kirloskar Motor has refreshed its premium hatchback offering, the Glanza, by introducing a new limited-period 'Prestige Package' accessory bundle. Aimed at enhancing the car's visual appeal and cabin ambiance, the package is available across dealerships until July 31. This latest update builds on the Glanza's growing popularity in India's competitive hatchback market. The 'Prestige Package' includes several stylish, dealer-fitted cosmetic upgrades. These comprise chrome-accented body side mouldings, rear lamp and lower grille garnishes, door visors, illuminated scuff plates, and a sporty rear skid plate. Though optional, these accessories are expected to appeal to buyers seeking a more personalised and upmarket look for their vehicle. Launched in 2019, the Toyota Glanza is based on the Maruti Suzuki Baleno and has carved a niche for itself with over two lakh units sold since its debut. It is particularly popular among urban commuters and first-time buyers, thanks to its combination of fuel efficiency, modern features, and compact proportions that suit city driving. Under the hood, the Glanza continues with the same 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine that delivers a peppy yet efficient performance. Customers can choose between a 5-speed manual and an AMT gearbox, while a CNG variant is also available for those prioritising low running costs. Toyota claims a fuel efficiency of 22.94 km/l for the AMT variant and an impressive 30.61 km/kg for the CNG model. The hatchback remains well-equipped with features such as a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Head-Up Display (HUD), 360-degree camera, rear AC vents, automatic climate control, and connected car technology via Toyota i-Connect. Additionally, safety has received a boost with six airbags now being offered as standard across variants. Priced from ₹ 6.90 lakh (ex-showroom), the updated Glanza continues to offer great value in the premium hatchback space. It also retains Toyota's standard 3-year/100,000 km warranty, which can be extended up to 5 years or 2,20,000 km—reaffirming the brand's commitment to reliability and peace of mind. With the addition of the Prestige Package and enhanced safety features, Toyota's Glanza is now an even more compelling choice for buyers looking for a stylish, feature-rich, and dependable hatchback.
