‘Sab theek hai': Harsh Goenka takes a dig at Indians ignoring local issues like potholes, jobs, and price rise

Industrialist
Harsh Goenka
has sparked a conversation online after his latest post on X (formerly Twitter), where he criticized the tendency of Indians to obsess over international politics while ignoring pressing domestic issues like
potholes
, joblessness, and inflation.
In his post, Goenka wrote: 'We are like: Two people eat lunch in another country — we feel betrayed. Someone wins an election for a local position in a far away country — we lose sleep. Meanwhile, potholes,
unemployment
and price hikes at home? 'Sab theek hai.''
His sarcastic commentary came shortly after
Zohran Mamdani
, a 32-year-old Ugandan-born Indian American, made history by becoming the first South Asian to win a major-party primary for New York City's mayoral race.

Another added, 'Absolutely! We're so obsessed with global affairs, even the media is. Developed nations don't care what happens here, but we are glued to their politics. Media should focus more on local issues.'
Others echoed similar thoughts:
'Agree. How does someone winning a New York mayoral primary affect us? We act like global citizens while ignoring our neighborhoods. No one even asks what happened to Swachh Bharat or the cess we keep paying.'
'We're global now. Local issues didn't make the itinerary,' quipped another.
Who is Zohran Mamdani?
Zohran Kwame Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda, to Indian parents. He became a U.S. citizen in 2018 and currently lives in Astoria, Queens. His mother, Mira Nair, is a celebrated filmmaker known for movies like Monsoon Wedding, The Namesake, and Mississippi Masala. His father, Mahmood Mamdani, is a professor of anthropology at Columbia University.
Mamdani moved to New York City at age 7 and graduated from Bowdoin College in Maine with a degree in Africana Studies. He previously worked as a foreclosure prevention counselor and also made a mark in the local hip-hop scene, rapping under the stage name Young Cardamom.
He was elected to the New York State Assembly in 2020, unseating a long-time incumbent. As a Democratic Socialist, Mamdani has pushed for progressive legislation, including a pilot project offering free city bus rides and a bill to prevent nonprofits from supporting unauthorized Israeli settlement activities.
Critics, including former Governor Andrew Cuomo, have questioned his readiness for the mayor's office. But Mamdani counters by embracing his lack of political baggage, stating he's 'proud' not to have Cuomo's 'experience of corruption, scandal and disgrace.'
Mamdani's campaign has leaned heavily on creative, culturally rooted digital outreach — from Bollywood-themed TikToks to a dramatic polar plunge in a suit to symbolize his plan to 'freeze rents.'

'Secularism goes against Indian idea': Assam CM Himanta Biswa backs RSS call to remove words from Constitution; adds 'socialism never our vision'

NEW DELHI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday backed RSS's suggestion to restore the Preamble of the Constitution, saying that this is the right time to remove the legacies of the Emergency, including the words "secularism" and "socialism. " While launching a book titled The Emergency Diaries: Years That Forged a Leader at the state BJP headquarters in Guwahati, Biswa said that these words were not part of the original Constitution and should be dropped, as secularism goes against the Indian idea of Sarva Dharma Sambhava, and socialism was never part of India's original economic vision. "Today, we launched the book The Emergency Diary, which talks about the struggle and resistance during the Emergency. When we talk about the Emergency, this is the right moment to remove its remaining impact, just like Prime Minister Modi is working to erase the legacy of colonial rule. Two major outcomes of the Emergency were the addition of the words secularism and socialism to our Constitution. I believe secularism goes against the Indian idea of Sarva Dharma Sambhava. Socialism was also never truly our economic vision, our focus has always been on Sarvodaya Antyodaya," Biswa said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Forget Furosemide, Use This Household Item To Help Drain Edema Fluid WellnessGuide Learn more Undo "So, I request the Government of India to remove these two words, secularism and socialism, from the Preamble, as they were not part of the original Constitution and were added later by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi," he added. This comes a day after Hosabale proposed that the words "socialist" and "secular" were forcibly added to the Constitution and should now be reconsidered. "The Emergency wasn't just a misuse of power, but an attempt to crush civil liberties. Millions were imprisoned, and freedom of the press was suppressed." He said that those who imposed the Emergency and trampled the Constitution and democracy have never apologised. The words "socialist", "secular", and "integrity" were inserted into the Preamble under the 42nd Constitutional Amendment moved by the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi government in 1976. The amendment changed the description of India in the Preamble from a "sovereign, democratic republic" to a "sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic." Earlier, the Supreme Court dismissed a plea challenging the inclusion of the words "socialist", "secular", and "integrity" to the Preamble of the Constitution. A bench of CJI Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar said amendment power of the Parliament extends to the Preamble as well, and the fact that the Constitution was adopted in 1949 does not make any difference.

Who Is Arya Rajendran, India's Youngest Mayor, Cited By NYC's Mamdani In Now-Viral Post?

Last Updated: Mamdani's 2020 post about CPI(M) leader Arya Rajendran, who became India's youngest mayor at the time, became viral after he won the race for New York Mayor. Zohran Mamdani, 33, stunned political circles in the United States by defeating former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo as well as the Democratic establishment to win the party's primary for mayor – in what is being described as a political earthquake in the US. However, his victory put the spotlight on Kerala politician, Arya Rajendran. Mamdani, the son of acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair, is on course to become the first Muslim Mayor of New York. His campaign focused on everyday economic issues like housing, transportation, child care and food prices. Mamdani attracted the scorn of the MAGA (Make America Great Again) base over his socialist rhetoric and religion. US President Donald Trump slammed his victory, calling him a '100% Communist Rhetoric". Mamdani's views on Israel – whom he has accused of committing a 'genocide' in Gaza – did not sit well with Republicans and some Democrats. Who Is Arya Rajendran? However, attention has turned to Mamdani's 2020 post on CPI(M) leader Arya Rajendran, who at the time became the youngest Mayor in the country and took charge of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. Rajendran is a prominent leader from Kerala's Nair community who created history by becoming the youngest mayor anywhere in the world in 2020 at the age of 21, breaking the records of Sabitha Beegum becoming Kollam mayor at 23 and Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis becoming Nagpur mayor at 27. In the 2020 civic elections, Rajendran won from Mudavanmugal ward in the city, defeating her nearest Congress rival by a margin of 549 votes. The CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front bagged 51 seats, BJP 34, UDF ten seats and others five in the election. She is married to CPI(M) MLA Sachin Dev. In 2023, Rajendran made headlines after a photo of her working from her office with her one-month-old baby went viral. She was inducted into the CPI(M)'s Thiruvananthapuram District Committee in 2024. Why Is Mamdani's Post Going Viral? Mamdani had then retweeted a post from the Communist Party of India (Marxist)'s Puducherry committee congratulating Rajendran for her achievement, writing 'them: so what kind of mayor does nyc need right now? me:" them: so what kind of mayor does nyc need right now?me: — Zohran Kwame Mamdani (@ZohranKMamdani) December 27, 2020 This post showing his early political ambitions is being highlighted now to claim that Mamdani is a communist. 'Not in my wildest dreams did I ever think Arya Rajendran would be a matter of discussion in the New York mayoral election," a user wrote on X. Several right-wing politicians and influencers also branded him as a 'communist", claiming he will destroy New York with his liberal and progressive agenda. Mamdani has also been criticised for his views on India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. First Published: June 27, 2025, 08:18 IST
