Experts warn holidaymakers about charging their phones at the airport over 'juice jacking' scam
Tourists have been urged to be cautious about using airport USB phone charging ports over fears of cyber attacks.
'Juice jacking' - a form of cybercrime which involves hackers tampering with public USB ports - is on the rise in the USA and experts fear it could soon become commonplace at UK airports.
As USB ports are able to transmit power and data, they can be 'extremely risky' to use if they have been tampered with.
Unsuspecting holidaymakers could have malware uploaded onto their phone when they plug it into an airport USB outlet.
Hackers can then access personal data such as passwords and banking information with ease.
So, how can tourists protect themselves from 'juice jacking'? IT experts from Tecnovy Academy have shared their top tips to avoid falling victim.
Fully charge all devices before leaving home
The experts advise charging devices before leaving home and carrying a power bank in your hand luggage so you aren't forced to rely on airport USB ports.
Always use your own plug and wire
If you do need to charge your phone at the airport, the experts recommend using a traditional plug socket with your own wire instead.
Plugs can only transfer power, not data, so can't be affected by the hackers.
Buy a USB data blocker
USB data blockers are small adapters that attach to the end of your wire and block transmission from USB ports, only allowing power through.
It will stop malware reaching your device even if the USB port has been tampered with.
Be wary of public USB ports
Juice jacking could happen at any public USB port, not just at the airport. USB ports at pubs, train stations or shopping centres could also be risky.
Ertul Topuzoglu, CEO of Tecnovy Academy, says: 'With juice jacking reports on the rise in the US, it is crucial for Brits to stay aware, as it is likely to reach the UK soon. While using any public USB port is a risk, hackers seem to be targeting airports specifically.
'This is likely because people in airports are more reliant on USB charging ports than in other public places, where they might otherwise wait until they are back at home or in their car.
'With many people having holidays booked over the summer, it is important to stay informed on how to keep your devices safe in the airport. No matter how convenient a USB port might seem, they are never worth the risk to your device and personal data.
'If you think you have plugged your device into a USB port that has been tampered with, disconnect immediately and run an antivirus or malware detection software as soon as possible. Change all of your passwords, particularly for things like your bank, and ensure you report it to the airport authorities so that it can be properly investigated.'

Royal Family have travelled by train for more than 180 years
The royal family have enjoyed rail travel since the day Queen Victoria made her first trip in a specially made carriage from Slough to London Paddington. The Great Western Railway company built the carriage in anticipation of Victoria's patronage and two years later she did, but only after being persuaded on board by Prince Albert, a veteran of rail travel fascinated by the new technology. She appeared a fan and wrote in her diary about the journey on June 13 1842: 'It took us exactly 30 minutes going to Paddington, & the motion was very slight, & much easier than the carriage, also no dust or great heat, in fact, it was delightful and so quick.' To mark the 175th anniversary of the trip, Queen Elizabeth II and the late Duke of Edinburgh recreated the journey in 2017. Victoria later commissioned a special pair of coaches built by the London & North Western Railway in 1869 and so began a succession of royal trains with her son King Edward VII, later ordering a royal train designed to be 'as much like the Royal Yacht as possible'. The royal family keep up with modern innovations and Victoria's grandson King George V installed one of the first baths on a train during the First World War as he toured the UK to boost morale. No special royal locomotive exists but the royal train is pulled by standard engines and throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries all major railway companies within the British Isles maintained dedicated royal carriages. To mark Elizabeth's Silver Jubilee in 1977 British Rail provided a new royal train that featured a Queen's saloon or carriage with a bedroom, sitting room and bathroom and a separate bedroom and bathroom for her dresser, while Philip's carriage was a similar design but included a kitchen. In the mid 1980s the fleet was updated and new carriages were added including one used by the King, then the prince of Wales, and now the train has nine carriages, seven royal and two support.

AN ICONIC car brand is set to launch an incredible new EV version of its best-selling model of all time - and it comes out early next year. The cutting-edge electrical version of the fan-favourite car will be on the UK market in January 2026 - and Brit drivers need to wait just half a year to own one. 3 Drivers will be able to get their hands on the stunning Volvo EX60 in just six months. The state-of-the-art car comes as the brand's response to Audi 's Q6-e-tron, the Porsche Macan Electric and the much anticipated BMQ iX3. The all-electric car is the non-petrol alternative to the popular XC60 SUV - the brand's best-selling model of all time. The first images of the EX60 revealed the car's new rear light signature. It does not appear to have a full-width light bar - like most other EVs being launched at the moment - but it does feature separate segmented tail-lights embedded in the rear windscreen. These are also found on the Volvo EX90, EX30 and ES90. The breathtaking new design also features angular rear haunches, a bigger Volvo lettering across the tailgate and smooth surfacing. It will also boast eight-bit-style LED headlights, flush door handles, and aerodynamic alloy wheels. The EX60's overall proportions are understood to be similar to the current XC60. It is currently unclear if the new EX60 will feature the advanced LiDAR driver-assistance tech, which features on the flagship EX90. I drove the new Volvo EX30 Cross Country – it's a tough, high-riding EV that can conquer ice lakes and look cool at home Chief Product and Strategy Officer, Erik Severinson told Auto Express the brand is experimenting with 'different kinds of [safety] sensors going forward'. The EX60 is also set to be Volvo's first model to feature the new "multi-adaptive safety belt" tech. And it will also be the first built on the firm's next-generation SPA3 platform. The new platform has been branded as a "groundbreaking" feat which was deigned for "longer range, efficiency and intelligent core computing". SPA3 is set to allow the Swedish brand to develop and build cars of all sizes using the same extraordinary tech. Another big upgrade that will set the EX60 apart from other electric Volvos is its new 'structural' battery pack. This clever tech, already used by Tesla and BYD, bonds the battery directly to the car's floor. Severinson said this leads to 'improved energy density". It also allows 'great driveability' thanks to extra stiffness in the chassis. The larger EX90 uses a massive 107kWh battery, giving it a range of 374 miles on a single charge. Since the EX60 is smaller, it is likely to get a more compact, lighter pack - but with better energy density. It could therefore potentially manage close to 400 miles on a full charge. The incorporation of the new cutting-edge tech is partly thanks to the EX60's megacasted rear underfloor. Most cars have rear undercarriages constructed using a multitude of different parts. But the EX60 will get a single unit that is cast out of aluminium. Megacasting is a relatively new concept in the car world. Tesla is one mainstream brand already using the method, along with several Chinese firms like Nio, Zeekr and XPeng. Volvo says the new rear floor is '15–20 per cent less' heavy than a traditional stamped version, while offering 'just as good, if not better, safety and durability'. The process brings other benefits too, including more boot space and faster production. A megacasted floor takes just 120 seconds to make - compared to an hour for a standard multi-piece one. Right now, Volvo uses 20 per cent recycled aluminium in production, but it plans to boost that figure and fully recycle each floor at the end of the car's life.
