For the second time in two days, the Philadelphia Phillies and Minnesota Twins hooked up for a deal before Thursday's 6 p.m. trade deadline. The Phillies are acquiring outfielder Harrison Bader from the Twins for a pair of prospects, according to multiple reports. The Phillies are sending outfielder Hendry Mendez and right-handed pitcher Geremy Villoria, according to The Athletic. ESPN's Jeff Passan was first to report the trade. Bader, 31, hit .258/.339/.439 with a .778 OPS and a 2.8 bWAR in 96 games this season with Minnesota. His splits this season are even — he has a .779 OPS vs. righties and .774 OPS against lefties. He plays all three outfield positions, though he's played mostly in left field this season. He also grades out well defensively. The 31-year-old signed with the Twins in February. The Phillies will be his sixth team since 2022. Bader will add a needed righty bat to the Phillies' outfield. Where he fits into the puzzle is the looming question. The Phillies acquired "legitimate" closer Jhoan Duran from the Twins on Wednesday night for a pair of top 100 prospects, catcher Eduardo Tait and pitcher Mick Abel. Duran, 27, brings a high-velocity arm to the back of the Phillies' bullpen, and he has one of the most popular on-field entrances among MLB closers. He throws 100 mph fastballs and 97.5 mph "splinkers." After trading for Duran on Wednesday, Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski told reporters in Chicago that the Phils weren't done looking to improve. The club was done shopping for bullpen arms but still was looking to add another bat, preferably a righty. Bader fits that description. Mendez was the Phillies' No. 12-ranked prospect, according to He's hitting .290/.374/.434 with a .808 OPS in 85 games in Double-A in 2025. Amidst the excitement of the Los Angeles Lakers landing generational superstar Luka Doncic in a Feb. 1 trade was the question of how he would fit alongside LeBron James. Many of their skills and abilities overlap, and some predicted that the partnership wouldn't work. But offensively, the Lakers got the hang of it. Doncic became their main facilitator in their halfcourt offense, while James played off the ball as much as he ever has, which allowed him to conserve his energy and even play some high-level defense. It was a good enough setup to take the team to the third seed in the Western Conference with a 50-32 record, even though it lost in five games in the first round of the playoffs due to its lack of supporting talent. It is never easy for a superstar to adjust when he joins forces with another superstar. But Steve Nash pointed out how well James adapted to the situation, and Nash praised him for making the necessary adjustments during a recent episode of the "Mind the Game" podcast. 'One thing I'd also like to say that I really admire about LeBron is the way he adapted this season to playing with Luka. That takes a lot of maturity. It takes a lot of sacrifice. He approached this as a gift and an opportunity to make a team as good as it could possibly be. Now it was slammed together quick, they lost early in the playoffs, but I think we saw the seeds of a team that was this close to going deep in the playoffs, making a run for a title. Recently acquired Boston Celtics player shares excitement over new addition
Earlier this summer, Brad Stevens added Josh Minott to the Boston Celtics roster via free agency. Minott, 22, has spent the past three seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves, playing in a total of 93 regular-season games. Unfortunately for the Memphis alum, he was unable to crack Chris Finch's deep rotation, especially as the Timberwolves emerged as a genuine contender in the Western Conference. Clearly, Stevens sees potential in Minott's game. The idea will likely be to either develop him into someone who can contribute on a contenting roster, or build up his value enough that the franchise gets a solid return on the trade market in the future. Either way, Minott will likely get a fair shot to prove himself on the Celtics retooling roster. When speaking to the media at the NBA Summer League, Luka Garza, who also joined the Celtics this summer from the Timberwolves, shared his shock and excitement at having Minott head to Boston with him. The duo has both struggled to earn minutes for Finch, and will now be fighting to crack a weakened Celtics rotation. "I didn't know," Garza told Bobby Krivitsky of Hardwood Houdini. "It was a surprise, but I called him right away. We were both excited. We've been through a lot together. When he was a rookie, we went down to Iowa together to play the Iowa rules training camp, and we kind of made it up together to the Timberwolves, and [we] are starting to see opportunities for both of of us, quite honestly, did produce when we did get opportunities, but just didn't see too many of them, just because of how stacked of a roster we had. So it's cool to have someone come with you that you have a good relationship with. I feel like we've been always connected on the floor, just playing with each other." Both Minott and Garza join the Celtics with something to prove. Mazzulla's rotation will have minutes up for grabs, and if they can make the most of the opportunities afforded to them, they could prove to be shrewd additions by Boston's front office. Minott and Garza will head into training camp with at least one familiar face to help with the transition. They will likely hold each other accountable and continue to push each other.
