Reese Witherspoon's Legally Blonde prequel Elle is branded a 'pointless money grab' that 'nobody wants to see' by disgruntled fans
Titled Elle, the production is set to sashay onto screens in summer 2026, and features 24-year-old rising star Lexi Minetree as a young Elle Woods.
But while some fans are keen to see their favourite Harvard-bound heroine in her formative years, others are asking: do we really need to see what Elle was like before she knew what 'habeas corpus' meant?
The new show promises to explore Elle's early life, presumably in the sun-drenched halls of her Beverly Hills high school, before she turned heartbreak into Harvard acceptance.
But if early internet reactions are anything to go by, not everyone is buying the glittery reboot.
While there's certainly excitement around the casting of fresh-faced Minetree, critics have taken to social media to call out what they see as yet another example of a sequel/prequel/spin-off nobody actually asked for.
One user on X said: 'This is so funny to me because why does Elle Woods need a prequel?
'She is one of the most fully formed characters. We fully understand her whole deal and where she came from basically instantly.'
Echoing this sentiment, another person added: 'Also there's no room for good character arc!
'Nobody wants to see how Elle became the person she was at the start of the movie… the movie has her arc, so any arc they give her in the show is going to ring false.'
The original 2001 film Legally Blonde, starring Reese Witherspoon in arguably her most well-known role, was praised not just for its bright visuals and punchy dialogue, but for its portrayal of Elle's transformation.
From ditzy fashion student to rising legal star, her backstory isn't a mystery, it's clear from the first five minutes, argued fans.
Another user said: 'Doesn't even make sense… The entire point of Legally Blonde is to show Elle's character arc from superficial to empathetic.
'She wouldn't have had a major character growth story before the events of the film or else it negates the entire point of the film.'
Others questioned the narrative logic. If viewers know Elle's long-time boyfriend Warner Huntington is going to dump her, do they really want to watch them date, they asked.
'Are we supposed to cheer for her and that man when we know what's going to happen?' one commenter asked.
Having already been stretched into three additional films and a hit musical, the prequel series is the latest reimagining. Pictured left, Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods, and right, Lexi Minetree as Elle Woods
Another said: 'There is no depth to cover.'
Legally Blonde has already been stretched across three films, a successful Broadway musical and countless Halloween costumes.
The idea of mining the character further suggests, for some, less a hunger for storytelling and more a hunger for nostalgia-fuelled profit.
'It's just a money grab,' one viewer wrote.
Others have suggested the new show is aimed at a younger demographic - perhaps those who weren't yet born when Elle first stood in her pink power suit and told the Harvard admissions board, 'What, like it's hard?'
The series might bring a beloved story to Gen Z viewers who didn't experience the original in real time.
And with the growing popularity of female-led coming-of-age series, perhaps the producers are hoping Elle will follow in the footsteps of shows like Gossip Girl (rebooted), The Summer I Turned Pretty and XO, Kitty.
'I think the reason we see so many sequels, prequels, remakes, live-action remakes, etc. is that our culture is stagnating, and creativity is on the decline,' said one commenter.
But many have questioned whether another iteration of the Legally Blonde series is really necessary
Whether the series turns out to be a fun addition to the Legally Blonde universe or simply another unnecessary spin-off, Elle Woods remains as beloved as ever.
Meanwhile, filming of the new series is well underway and the cast were spotted shooting a scene in Los Angeles earlier this month.
Minetree, who Reese cast as the young Elle Woods after a four-month nationwide search, was seen filming shopping scenes with her co-stars on the iconic Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.
Reese will executively produce the show, 24 years after starring as the well-known character in the first film.
In February, Reese announced the news that Lexi got the role of Elle and in May, 2024, Reese reprised her role as Elle Woods to announce the new series.
The star is developing the Legally Blonde spinoff with the help of her production company Hello Sunshine.

Welsh actor looks unrecognisable almost 30 years after his breakout role in iconic film as he strolls through London - but can YOU guess who it is?
A Welsh-born actor known for his roles in breakthrough films Twin Town and Notting Hill looked unrecognisable out in London on Friday. After his breakthrough, the actor went on to star in The Amazing Spider-Man and Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, most recently making an appearance in the House Of The Dragon. He presented Welsh-language television programmes on S4C after leaving school, before making a play for the stage by studying at the Guildhall School Of Music & Drama. The BAFTA-winning actor a low profile as he stepped out in the capital on Friday on a rainy summer's day. For his outing, he wore a simple black t-shirt and grey jeans and trainers, adding a pop of colour with a colourful baseball cap. He appeared to be sporting a recent injury as he could be seen with a black wrist support glove on one hand - but can YOU guess who it is? It's none other than Rhys Ifans, who played the iconic role of Spike in the 1999 film Notting Hill alongside Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts. Rhys previously revealed how he led a double life of studying in an elitist drama college while breaking off doors to live illegally in around fifteen squats for months at a time. The Welsh actor said he would remove steel doors of empty council properties and change the locks before using them as his accommodation for over four years. The Notting Hill star recalled his 'great life' squatting while studying at Guildhall School of Music and Drama in the Nineties, but added he knew it was 'illegal and dangerous'. He told Rob Brydon's podcast: 'I'd been in London a year before I went to drama school. I moved down with a mate of mine. 'For my whole period in drama school I lived in squats. I lived in about fourteen, fifteen different squats. 'It was of course illegal, and I guess looking back, dangerous. But it was a great life. 'It would be council properties, council flats. You take the steel door off in the middle of the night and then as soon as you change the locks put a notice on the door. 'They had to then switch the gas and electricity on and then you could be in it for weeks to months.' He added: 'But it was a constant case of we moved around a lot with a group of lads and girls from Belfast who I'd met at a Cramps gig and we lived together for four or five years moving in and out of different squats of varying degrees of comfort and discomfort. 'In a sense I had this real double life, which was wonderful. 'I had this kind of elitist wonderful life in college and then this extraordinary kind of vagabond existence when I went home each night. 'It was easy to do then. It's nigh on impossible now to break a squat but then it was relatively simple.' In recent years, Rhys has played Fool to Glenda Jackson's King Lear, and Scrooge at the Old Vic. He led the National's Exit The King; and then starred at the Royal Court in Ed Thomas's play On Bear Ridge. It comes after Rod Stewart revealed in 2020 that he wants a movie to be made about his life, following the success of Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman - and tapped actor Rhys to play him. Sharing his thoughts on why the Notting Hill star was perfect, he said: 'Yeah, Rhys would be a very good idea. [But] he has got to do something with his barnet.'

Selma Blair shares stunning holiday snaps after recent breakthrough in MS battle: 'I am so grateful for this time to breathe'
Selma Blair shared a slew of stunning holiday snaps on Thursday amid her battle with multiple sclerosis. The Legally Blonde actress, 53, announced earlier this year that she had gone into remission from the debilitating illness after receiving a groundbreaking new treatment. MS is a debilitating autoimmune condition that affects the brain and spinal cord and leaves people with mobility issues, memory loss and fatigue. There is no cure, but some treatments have been shown to slow progression and ease symptoms, including stem cell transplants, which doctors and scientists describe as the new frontier of regenerative medicine. Selma looked happier than ever in the holiday snaps with her son Arthur, 14, and could be seen lounging with a book and posing by the poolside. The star also showed off her incredible figure and bikini collection as she made the most of relaxing on her tropical getaway. Alluding to her battle with the illness, which Selma was diagnosed with in 2018, she wrote: 'This is the dream I love. Not the hard things or the hurt things, the tantrums and the tears, nor the searching. But that is the stuff that builds and tests. 'Then there is a pause. In every storm. And we can enjoy. And I am so grateful for this time to breathe. With Arthur and friends. 'With love, I wish us all a bit of breathing and smiling. Kisses and soar on.' The post went down a storm with the Hollywood icon's celebrity friends and fans alike. Nicole Scherzinger wrote: 'You are stunning. Thankyou for your light and inspiration.' Fans echoed the sentiments of the former Pussycat Doll in their replies, writing: 'Just watched The Sweetest Thing again the other night. It's inconceivable to me that both you and Christina have the same condition. 'You are two of my most favourite actresses and your journey has been so amazing to watch.'; 'You are my hero, not letting MS get in the way! Makes me try hard to not let it get in my way.' About six years ago, Blair underwent hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), a procedure that extracts and then reinfuses stems cells - undifferentiated cells with the ability to develop into various specialized cell types - into a person's body About six years ago, Blair underwent hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), a procedure that extracts and then reinfuses stem cells - undifferentiated cells with the ability to develop into various specialized cell types - into a person's body. With HSCT, patients specifically receive hematopoietic stem cells, which are immature cells that can develop into all types of blood cells, including white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets - which help blood clot. They are derived from bone marrow, peripheral blood, or umbilical cord blood. Speaking to experts have said the results of these procedures can go as far as to 'see patients go from a wheelchair to walking.' So far, this groundbreaking field of medicine has made waves in the fields of cancers, autoimmune diseases and neurological disorders. Now, doctors are using them to repair years-worth of brain damage, even restoring some paralysed patients' ability to walk by regrowing tissue. Taken from the patients themselves, the cells are purified and then implanted into an area of their body where cells have died, such as brain tissue, to regrow those types of cells.

NFL WAG reveals why partners 'go into meltdown' when training camp begins
With NFL training camps officially underway, it's a time of the year the wives and girlfriends of players go weeks without seeing their partners and husbands. It's all part of an effort to build camaraderie among teammates old and new as they all get their bodies in shape for a grueling season. Rochelle Searight, the newlywed wife of San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, opened up about how tough the experience is on WAGs in the summer each season. 'Why do all the wives and girlfriends [of NFL players] go into a frenzy when their men report for training camp? Why is everybody online complaining? Let me give y'all some of these details on training camp and why everybody's in a panic,' Searight said in a TikTok video posted on Wednesday. 'This is my husband's sixth year in the NFL. Every single season has looked different in training camp. But one thing that will never change is the men are in camp for real. 'They have to report to work and they have to sleep in their hotel, they have a curfew, and if they leave, they get a huge fine. It's crazy. 'Training camp does last for multiple weeks and the women freak out because — so in my situation, I'm a mother. 'Now he has to abruptly leave, and [I'm] taking care of my rambunctious four-year-old by myself, who has never slept, and he is off the walls.' Searight mentioned how everyone is coming from a different situation - with some WAGs dealing with long-distance or a lack of job security. 'For some other people's situations, they're not based in the same city that the team plays… and they stay in the Bay just during the season,' Searight continued, using the 49ers as an example. 'The wives and girlfriends who are back home now have to get left and [their significant other] have to go report to work, go to camp. I get to see my husband every few days, they don't get to see their man at all for like weeks.' 'Another thing, minicamp is so intense. Some of the men are not guaranteed a spot yet, they are fighting for their spot on the team. So if they don't make this team and they end up on a different team, the family has to pack up and move. It's just a lot. 'Abrupt training camp change is no joke, so that's why you'll see all of the girlies going crazy online and then social media is a fun way to just distract from that time. 'So no, our men aren't our whole personality people. It just gives us a fun thing to look forward to. It's just content.' Searight says, 'Abrupt training camp change is no joke, so that's why you'll see all of the girlies going crazy online' (pictured: Christian McCaffrey (L) and his wife Olivia Culpo (R)) Searight is an influencer and content creator who works in the beauty industry. She boasts 257,000 followers on TikTok. She's been coupled up with Aiyuk since at least November of 2018 - while he was playing college football at Arizona State. Aiyuk and Searight have a son, Braylon, who was born in September of 2020 - per her Instagram. The wideout and the 49ers agreed to terms on a four-year $120million extension last season. It includes $76million in guarantees. San Francisco opens its 2025 campaign against the rival Seattle Seahawks on the road on September 7.
