Meet Gemma 3n: Google's lightweight AI model that works offline with just 2GB RAM

Time of Indiaa day ago

Google
has officially rolled out Gemma 3n, its latest
on-device AI
model first teased back in May 2025. What makes this launch exciting is that
Gemma 3n
brings full-scale
multimodal processing
think audio, video, image, and text straight to smartphones and edge devices, all without needing constant internet or heavy cloud support. It's a big step forward for developers looking to bring powerful AI features to low-power devices running on limited memory.
At the core of Gemma 3n is a new architecture called MatFormer short for Matryoshka Transformer. Think Russian nesting dolls: smaller, fully-functional models tucked inside bigger ones. This clever setup lets developers scale AI performance based on the device's capability. You get two versions E2B runs on just 2GB RAM, and E4B works with around 3GB.
Despite packing 5 to 8 billion raw parameters, both versions behave like much smaller models when it comes to resource use. That's thanks to smart design choices like Per-Layer Embeddings (PLE), which shift some of the load from the GPU to the CPU, helping save memory. It also features KV Cache Sharing, which speeds up processing of long audio and video inputs by nearly 2x perfect for real-time use cases like voice assistants and mobile video analysis.

Gemma 3n isn't just light on memory it's stacked with serious capabilities. For speech-based features, it uses an audio encoder adapted from Google's Universal Speech Model, which means it can handle
speech-to-text
and even
language translation
directly on your phone. It's already showing solid results, especially when translating between English and European languages like Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese.
On the visual front, it's powered by Google's new MobileNet-V5—a lightweight but powerful vision encoder that can process video at up to 60fps on phones like the Pixel. That means smooth, real-time video analysis without breaking a sweat. And it's not just fast—it's also more accurate than older models.

Gemma 3n Impact Challenge
, offering a $150,000 prize pool for apps that showcase the model's offline magic.
The best part? Gemma 3n runs entirely offline. No cloud, no connection just pure on-device AI. With support for over 140 languages and the ability to understand content in 35, it's a game-changer for building AI apps where connectivity is patchy or privacy is a priority.

Sending money to India, Pakistan, Philippines or Bangladesh? Emirates NBD to start charging, check charges, effective date

Dubai government-owned Emirates NBD , which offers free international money transfers through its DirectRemit services, will now charge for international transfers. The bank emailed its customers to inform them that it will begin charging a fee of Dh26.25 for all international remittances. Emirates NBD is among the UAE's largest banking groups by total income and is widely used by expats to send money to countries like India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Egypt, and the UK. From September 1, the Emirates NBD remittance fee will apply to transfers made through both online banking and the bank's mobile app. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play War Thunder now for free War Thunder Play Now Undo What will change for expats from India, Pakistan, the Philippines, and other countries DirectRemit by Emirates NBD is widely used by expats in the UAE for fast and free money transfers to their home countries, including India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Egypt, and the United Kingdom. Transfers through this service typically take less than 60 seconds and have been entirely free of charge until now. Starting in September, customers using DirectRemit to send money to these countries will have to pay Dh26.25 per transaction. This could particularly affect low-income workers who send money home frequently in small amounts, as the fixed fee will reduce the net amount received by their families. Live Events The fee will also apply to all other international transfers, regardless of destination. In addition, the bank will charge up to Dh26.25 for recalling or cancelling both local and international transfers. For those using BUNA , a regional cross-border payment platform, charges will be applied 'as per actuals,' meaning the final fee will vary depending on the transaction. The move may prompt customers to explore other transfer options, including money exchange houses or digital platforms offering more competitive rates. Many expats in the UAE rely on Emirates NBD for their remittance needs due to its convenience, speed, and previously zero-fee structure. The upcoming changes might shift user behavior as customers weigh the cost against the convenience. The bank has not stated if any exemptions or special rates will be available for frequent users or for transfers of larger amounts. How much do other UAE banks charge for international wire transfers? Other banks in the UAE generally charge international wire transfer fees that vary based on the currency, transfer method, and destination. Typically, these fees range from AED 20 to AED 60 per transaction. Many banks offer some free transfers monthly via online or mobile banking channels, after which a fee applies. With this update, Emirates NBD becomes the latest UAE bank to revise its fee structure, possibly to match up with the broader trends in digital banking and cross-border transaction costs.

North Korea opens grand seaside resort inaugurated by Kim Jong Un; but, not everyone is welcome

North Korea has opened a grand seaside resort called Wonsan-Kalma. State media described it as a 'national treasure-level tourism city'. Kim Jong Un inaugurated it himself. The resort includes waterparks and high-rise hotels. It can host nearly 20,000 guests, CNN reported. It is located on North Korea's eastern coast and is connected by a newly-opened train station and international airport. The location hints at North Korea's plans to attract foreign visitors, especially Russians. Only Russian officials attended the opening, showing North Korea's stronger ties with Moscow and growing isolation from the West. While the country faces severe hunger and hardship, this lavish project is being promoted as proof of Kim's care for his people, according to CNN. Kim Jong Un has said North Korea will expand tourism zones soon and build big tourist and cultural sites across the country. Kim visited the Wonsan-Kalma resort at least seven times. The Supremo guided the work himself and aiming for top global standards. In December 2024, after nearly five years of COVID-related border closure, North Korea reopened the northern city of Samjiyon for tourists. Tour companies in China confirmed the news. The 2020 shutdown led to major food shortages due to halted imports and global sanctions. Travel firms expect other cities like Pyongyang to reopen soon as restrictions ease. Still, foreign tourist visits to North Korea remain strictly controlled. Past Russian tourists had to follow many rules, including limited photography and attending organised performances. Experts believe the resort may soon welcome Russian visitors. It will support Kim's image of focusing on tourism while continuing his defence policies, according to CNN. The new Wonsan-Kalma resort is expected to serve elite officials from Pyongyang, not the general public. Experts say the project shows Kim Jong Un's aim to boost the economy through tourism. In the 1990s, North Korea opened Mount Kumgang for South Korean visitors, seen as a rare step toward peace. Around two million tourists visited, bringing in money. But, the tours stopped after a South Korean visitor had been shot in 2008 for entering a restricted area. In 2022, many buildings in the region were demolished after Kim had called them outdated. 'The initial target for this resort is going to be the privileged domestic elite of Pyongyang, such as party officials and other high-ranking figures,' CNN quoted professor Lim Eul-chul as saying. 'The ceremony of the Wonsan-Kalma resort reflects Kim Jong Un's vision of 'socialist civilisation' and is part of his strategic effort to seek economic breakthroughs through the tourism industry,' Lim added.

HC asks Haryana to re-examine groundwater extraction fee policy for hospitals, banquet halls

1 2 Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana high court has directed the Haryana govt and the Haryana Water Resources Authority (HWRA) to re-evaluate its policy on groundwater extraction fees with regard to hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and banquet halls. The HC wants state authorities to re-examine fee categorisation to ensure parity with industrial users. The court also restrained state authorities from taking any coercive action against the petitioners (health care service provider institutions and banquet halls) until the review process is completed. Justice Kuldeep Tiwari has passed these orders while disposing of a batch of 27 petitions filed by M/s White Oak Motel and Restaurants and others challenging the state notification dated Sep 10, 2021, which excluded their establishments from being treated as "industries" under Schedule I for the purpose of groundwater-use classification. Petitioners submitted that they are owners of banquet halls/marriage gardens/clinics/nursing homes etc., wherethrough, they are imparting services to the public at large. Moreover, the construction of the respective institutions/establishments is already complete, and now the petitioners only require water extraction for running their respective institutions/establishments. The main dispute was about differential treatment of establishments categorised under "industry" versus "infrastructure" with regard to groundwater extraction fee policy outlined in Schedule IV. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Everybody Is Switching To This Enterprise Accounting Software [Take a Look] Accounting ERP Click Here Undo Industrial users drawing less than 10 cubic metres per day are exempt from paying any fee. However, such an exemption does not apply to infrastructure users, a classification that includes hospitals, clinics, and marriage banquets. According to petitioners, this policy was discriminatory and irrational since many of their establishments provide essential public services, and their operations were being unfairly burdened when compared to industrial units. During the hearing of the matter, the counsel representing HWRA submitted that the issue could be reconsidered, noting that the existing policy was based on central govt models and may be due for a review. After hearing all parties, the court directed the state and HWRA to re-examine Schedule IV within two months and assess whether the fee categorisation applicable to industries can be extended to infrastructure users. In its recently released order, the judge, however, refrained from examining the legality of the 2021 notification on the grounds of arbitrariness or bias.
