India star fires fierce accusation at England players to "clear the air once and for all"

Daily Mirror3 days ago
India captain Shubman Gill clashed with England batters Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett during the third Rothesay Test at Lord's and has now given his side of the story
Shubman Gill has accused England openers of breaching the spirit of cricket by dragging their feet.

The Indian captain claimed Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett were 90 seconds late to the crease at the start of their second innings at Lord's - which lit the blue touchpaper for a feisty conclusion to England's tense 22-run win.

When Crawley backed away, and then called for treatment after being struck on the bottom hand by a lifting delivery from Jasprit Bumrah, finger-wagging Gill saw led a posse of Indian players remonstrating with him for blatant timewasting to run down the clock.

Ahead of the fourth Test at Old Trafford, Gill explained: 'A lot of people have been asking me about it, so let me clear the air once and for all. The English batsmen on that day had seven minutes' play left, but they were 90 seconds late coming to the crease - not 10, not 20, but 90 seconds late.
'Yes, most teams use this (ploy), but there's a manner to do it. If you get hit on the body, the physios are allowed to come on and that is fair. But to be able to come 90 seconds late to the crease is not something that comes in the spirit of the game.
'Leading up to that event, a lot of things happened that we thought should not have happened. It's not something I'm very proud of but there was a build-up - it didn't just come out of nowhere.
'We had no intention of doing that whatsoever but you're playing to win and there are a lot of emotions. Sometimes when you see things happening that should not happen, emotions come out of nowhere.'
England were unimpressed by India's hostility towards Crawley and Duckett - and white-ball captain Harry Brook admitted they resolved to 'get stuck in' and reciprocate the aggression. India tuned up for their date at Old Trafford by paying a visit to Manchester United's Carrington training ground.
It is not known whether United boss Ruben Amorim recommended batting or bowling first if Gill wins the toss for the first time in the series.

Rio Ferdinand can't believe what he's seen from Arsenal star - 'He is a joke'

Max Dowman's prodigious talent has made the 15-year-old midfielder impossible for Mikel Arteta to overlook, with the England youngster now being touted as one to watch by Rio Ferdinand Rio Ferdinand has been left in awe of Arsenal wonderkid Max Dowman following the teenager's pre-season display against AC Milan. Manchester United legend Ferdinand named him as the best 15-year-old talent in the world, while stating: 'He is a joke'. ‌ Those affiliated with Arsenal will be well aware of the phenomenal talent Dowman possesses, having tracked his progress through the youth team ranks. Despite his tender age, the left-footed attacking-midfielder has been fast-tracked into the first team, training with the Gunners' senior squad from the beginning of this year. ‌ Dowman was part of the squad Mikel Arteta took to Spain for a training camp last week and, on Wednesday, came off the bench at the 65-minute mark to face AC Milan during the team's pre-season game in Singapore. ‌ The England U17s sensation played in the right wing position, looking sharp and comfortable whenever in possession while scoring Arsenal's sixth penalty in a pre-arranged penalty shootout. His scintillating cameo sent a clear message that he's ready to be called upon by Arteta when the 2025/26 gets underway. Former TNT Sports pundit Ferdinand is one of many to jump on the Dowman hype train, having been left dazzled by what he's seen so far. He said on Rio Ferdinand Presents: 'There's a different energy about me when I'm talking about young players. Young players that get you off your seat. Who you watch and you just go, 'Ooh, give me some more of that'. 'I spoke about him in November by the way, Max Dowman, don't forget that name guys. Hale End at Arsenal have produced another young gem. They've got Ethan Nwaneri already and Bukayo Saka who's an elder statesman now in the changing room. 'And 15-year-old Dowman knocking about now. If you haven't seen the clips I advise you to go online. Look, it's early days… But it looks like Declan Rice has taken him under his wing, they took a selfie together. 'He's definitely the best 15-year-old in the country, probably in Europe right now. Maybe the world. 'I keep seeing people saying, 'Don't overhype' - what are we in football for? We're here to be entertained, to get excited about young talent and appreciate it. I love it. I want to see the young players coming up. ‌ 'Go and see what this kid was doing in the FA Youth Cup game last year against Manchester United. He is a joke. And what I'm hearing from the Arsenal camp is that he's transferring his ability shown in the youth team to when he's training with the first team. 'The players are going, 'Woah', it's ridiculous so long may this continue and I hope we talk more and more about Dowman as the season goes on.' ‌ Statistics go some way to painting a picture of Dowman's enormous potential. He was only 13 when he became the youngest player to play for Arsenal's Under-18s and was just 14 when he first featured for the Under-21s, again setting a new record. In September last year, he became the youngest player ever to score in the UEFA Youth League. For England, too, Dowman has been far ahead of the curve, playing and scoring for England's Under-17s when he was 14. At this summer's Under-17 European Championship, he was the youngest player at the entire tournament but started all three of England's matches, scoring a stunning solo goal against the Czech Republic. ‌ The FA Youth Cup quarter-final against Manchester United in February provided the first moment of awe for many Arsenal fans. Playing at the Emirates Stadium in their Under-18s side, Dowman was on an entirely different level to the other players on the field. The only way that the United players could deal with him was to kick him from behind. Arsenal Player of the Season Rice backed up Ferdinand's comments in March, having said: 'He is unreal,' while describing him as 'the best 15-year-old in the country'. Even Arteta, whose first thought is usually to protect youngsters from too much expectation, has admitted: 'Some of the things he does in training are unbelievable'. Man Utd transfer news: Star considers exit as Old Trafford stance on new striker emerges

Manchester United still have work to do in the transfer market with a number of sales to make before they can add new players for Ruben Amorim with weeks remaining of the transfer window Just three weeks remain until the start of the Premier League season as Ruben Amorim shapes his new squad. The Red Devils are looking to bounce back from a disappointing season that saw a 15th place finish in the top-flight. ‌ United have added Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Diego Leon in time for their tour of the United States. The Red Devils have replenished their forward line in their bid to solve goalscoring issues but are yet to add a true striker to their squad. ‌ United have been linked to the likes of Ollie Watkins and Benjamin Sesko as the club continue to monitor opportunities. But exits may be required before another deal is done in the north west. ‌ Marcus Rashford has finally departed but just on loan and United will hope for transfer fees to bolster their kitty for the final weeks. Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia are all up for sale but yet to find new clubs this summer. Star considers exit Luke Shaw is 'ready to quit' Manchester United and willing to listen to offers from other clubs. The 30-year-old defender is reported to be aware of 'serious' interest from Saudi Arabia and mulling a departure in the coming months. Shaw is said to understand that his decade-long United career could be coming to an end with competition in his position from new additions Patrick Dorgu and Diego Leon. Amorim is said to be in no rush to lose Shaw however, despite the injury-plagued star's £150,000-a-week wages. New suitors Two clubs from the Saudi Pro League are interested in signing Antony from Manchester United. The Brazilian winger has been left out of United's pre-season tour squad having spent the second half of last season on loan at Real Betis. ‌ The La Liga side have yet to agree a deal for the former Ajax star who impressed in La Liga last term. United want to seal a permanent exit and transfer fee for the player, with Betis thus far unwilling to make an offer that meets United's demands. Antony has also been linked too Erik ten Hag's new side Bayer Leverkusen. The Dutch coach pushed back on the chance of a move however, and said: "We're not interested in him at the moment, but we'll see what happens in the future." Stance on a new striker An imminent move for a striker is not expected from Manchester United after signing Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, per the Manchester Evening News. The Red Devils have been linked with signing a new out-and-out forward but have thus far not seen progress with sales required to bolster their transfer funds. ‌ The club's plans were stalled when Liam Delap chose to sign for Chelsea instead of moving to Old Trafford. Nevertheless, Ruben Amorim is pleased with how his squad is shaping up. United have not ruled out a move for a new goalscorer however and are assessing what is feasible in the coming weeks. Sales are said to be 'essential' despite being provided some financial headroom by Marcus Rashford's loan move.

Ruben Amorim says Manchester United will not let players go cheaply

Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia were left out of the tour of the United States – Marcus Rashford subsequently went on loan to Barcelona – and the so-called 'bomb squad' have been training at the club's Carrington complex. United's transfer dealings have been widely criticised in recent seasons and Amorim said chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Jason Wilcox would not be taken advantage of just to get rid of those surplus to requirements. 'Some players have to find a new place to have more space in the team and others clearly show they want a new challenge and want new teams,' Amorim told a press conference ahead of the the Premier League Summer Series game against West Ham on Saturday. 'We are just allowing these players to have time to think and to decide. If we reach a point where they have to join the team, they will join the team because they are our players. 'I know for a fact that these people, Omar and Jason, and the club have a number (price) for these players. If they don't reach that, they will be Manchester United players, no doubt about that. 'I understand clubs are maybe waiting for the last minute, but they can have a surprise and I'm ready. I'm ready to receive the players. 'They have more competition – if you want to play in the World Cup you need to play, so I'm really happy with that because I have more options. If they have to fight each other to play, for me it is perfect.' United have spent about £130million on Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Diego Leon but are still in the market for a defensive midfielder and a striker. However, previous mis-steps on transfers mean United are being more circumspect this summer. 'At the moment, our club needs to be really careful when we sign a player,' added Amorim. 'So if we have to start the season with this squad, I'm happy because all the players that are here want to be here – and that for me is the most important thing.'
