Three-time Stanley Cup champion Alec Martinez retiring
In an interview Saturday prior to Chicago's home finale against Winnipeg, Martinez announced it would be his final NHL game. The Blackhawks, who are out of the playoff picture, finish the season on the road but Martinez will not make the trip.
Selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the fourth round of the 2007 NHL Draft, the Miami (Ohio) alum made his NHL debut Oct. 3, 2009, and played in four games that season.
The 37-year-old became a regular the following year and won his first Stanley Cup with the Kings in 2011-12. He won another in 2013-14, recording 10 points during the playoff run.
Martinez was dealt to Vegas in February 2020 and won his third Cup with the Golden Knights in 2022-23.
This was his lone season with the Blackhawks, who signed him as a free agent.
Saturday was Martinez's 862nd career game. Entering Saturday's play, he owned 88 goals and 201 assists for his career along with 1,883 blocked shots, 1,040 hits and a plus-73 plus/minus rating.

Thunderstorms wreaked havoc during the recent Club World Cup in the US, forcing a number of games to be delayed or even postponed, and they threatened to blow Manchester United off course on pre-season tour here as well. Ruben Amorim and his players avoided a torrential storm after training in Chicago on Thursday, but more wild weather across the eastern US forced United's flight from the city's O'Hare International Airport to New York to be delayed by two hours on Friday evening. United touched down in White Plains just before 10pm and transferred to their hotel in New Jersey ahead of Saturday's opening tour game against West Ham at the MetLife Stadium. At least Amorim and the squad were able to rest up in the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Chicago while they waited for the flight to be rescheduled, and took off very shortly after arriving at the airport. Reporters covering the tour were not so lucky and some didn't arrive in New York until the early hours of Saturday due to the storms, while others were re-routed around the weather system as far south as Nashville which added more than an hour to their journey. At least the forecast for Saturday is sunny and dry which means there should be no problems when United meet the Hammers in the Premier League Summer Series straight after Bournemouth take on Everton at the same venue. Coe's pitch to US investors The United team might only be spending 24 hours in the New York/New Jersey area, but that hasn't stopped the club from seizing an opportunity to wow potential investors in the £2billion Old Trafford rebuild. While the squad were preparing to fly to the Big Apple from Chicago, Lord Coe and club executives were attending a conference hosted by the British Consulate-General at Rockefeller Plaza on Friday afternoon called The Placemaking: Investing in Sports Real Estate in the UK. Although United are confident of securing public funding for the wider regeneration of the area around Old Trafford, private investment will be needed to fund the new 100,000-seater stadium itself. Lord Coe, who has led the stadium taskforce and is now chair-designate of the Mayoral Development Corporation set up to drive the project, and United chief operating officer Collette Roche addressed an audience of Wall Street investment banks and US financiers. United have taken inspiration from a number of American sports projects in their planning for what Sir Jim Ratcliffe envisions as the 'Wembley of the North' – not least the magnificent SoFi Stadium in LA and Chicago Bears' Burnham Park development. United chiefs are set to meet with the Bears next week once the team return to Chicago ahead of their second game against Bournemouth at Soldier Field. Date set for Carrington re-opening Old Trafford isn't the only rebuilding project under Ratcliffe's minority ownership. The club's Carrington training complex has undergone a £50m redevelopment and will officially re-open its doors at an opening ceremony on August 8. The upgrade has taken a year to complete and is aimed at providing a more elite environment for training and recovery. It has been finished ahead of schedule and will open 11 days before United kick off the new season at home to Arsenal. The first-team have continued to train at the women's and academy facility – as they did throughout much of last season – and use a gym set up on the indoor pitches, but they will shortly return to their redeveloped headquarters. Insiders tell Confidential that the women and youth teams will also benefit from the improvements made to their base while the men have been in situ. Focus on camera duo Job security has been in short supply since Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos took over the day-to-day running of United, with no fewer than 450 redundancies to date. So it was refreshing to see camera operators Noel Grice and Keith Rheade celebrate 25 years of working for the club on Friday as captain Bruno Fernandes spent some time after training at Soldier Field to congratulate them on their achievement. The pair started in the same week a quarter of a century ago in 2000 and are still going strong on the club's pre-season tour.

Amorim prepared to reintegrate exiled Man Utd players if valuations not met
July 26 (Reuters) - Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has said he is prepared to reintegrate the club's exiled players into his squad if they cannot be sold for fees that match the valuations expected by the former Premier League champions. Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia have been excluded from the squad that has travelled to the United States for the club's pre-season tour with the quartet seeking transfers away from Old Trafford. But while they have had to work separately from the first team squad since United returned for training ahead of the new season, Amorim acknowledged he would be prepared to accept the players back into his squad should they not be sold. "Some players have to find a new place to have more space in the team and other players clearly show they want a new challenge and want new teams," Amorim told reporters in Chicago ahead of Saturday's pre-season meeting with West Ham United. "We are just allowing these players to have time to think and to decide. If we reach a point where they have to join the team, they will join the team because they are our players. "I'm ready to receive the players. They have more competition, more competition if you want to play in the World Cup next year, you need to play. "So I'm really happy with that because I have more options. If they have to fight each other to play, for me it's perfect." United have signed Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo so far in the transfer window, while England winger Marcus Rashford has left to join Barcelona on loan as Amorim's side looks to bounce back from a lowly 15th place finish in last year's league table. The club's financial situation is such that United need to sell players if they want to add to their squad. Chief Executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox are charged with finding buyers for their "bomb squad". "I know for a fact these people - Jason, Omar and the club - have a number for these players," said Amorim. "If they don't reach that, they will be Manchester United players, no doubt about that. White Sox bash four homers, thrash Cubs in series opener
July 26 - Chase Meidroth, Colson Montgomery, Austin Slater and Mike Tauchman homered and Adrian Houser pitched effectively into the seventh inning as the host Chicago White Sox routed the Chicago Cubs 12-5 on Friday. Winners of six of seven since the All-Star break, the White Sox collected 18 hits, including seven for extra bases. Each starter had at least one hit while all but one had an RBI in the opener of a three-game series. Cubs starter Shota Imanaga (7-4) matched the shortest outing of his major league career, surrendering seven runs and 12 hits in three-plus innings. That included a trio of solo home runs as well as a two-run single off the bat of Lenyn Sosa during the White Sox' three-run first-inning outburst that saw Imanaga throw 35 of his 85 pitches. Slater opened the fourth with a home run before Edgar Quero chased Imanaga with a double as part of a 4-for-5 night. Miguel Vargas and Meidroth contributed three hits apiece while Slater and Sosa each added two hits. Meidroth and Slater each scored three runs. The offensive barrage certainly pleased the South Side backers among a sellout crowd of 38,762, especially after the Cubs swept the visiting White Sox from May 16-18. The Cubs struck out just three times against Houser, who won his fourth consecutive decision. Houser (6-2) allowed three runs on five hits and three walks in 6 2/3 innings. Cubs catcher Reese McGuire belted a three-run home run in the seventh, slicing the visitors' deficit to 11-3. McGuire paced the Cubs' nine-hit attack, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs, including a run-scoring single in the ninth. Vidal Brujan also had a season-high three hits for the Cubs. Montgomery has homered in three straight games for the White Sox, and he has seven RBIs in that span.
