Cellular connections to outpace LPWAN, radio in Indian utilities: Airtel Business-IDC study

NEW DELHI: Cellular connectivity, led by Narrowband-Internet of Things (
NB-IoT
), are likely to outpace the growth of low-powered wireless access network (LPWAN) and other radio technologies in India's utilities sector over the next four years, according to the findings of a study conducted by the International Data Corporation (IDC), commissioned by
Bharti Airtel
's enterprise arm.
The growth of NB-IoT will be supported by a low-cost of ownership, standardised wireless chipsets and modules, security, and reliability and availability, the study found.
The Airtel Business-IDC study found that the growth rate of cellular connections, including NB-IoT, in the utilities segment is expected to increase by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 25.6% between 2023 and 2027. By contrast, the LPWAN, including LoRaWAN and Sigfox, and radio (including RF mesh) segments are expected to grow at annualised rates of 17.8% and 13.5%, respectively, over the same period.
In India, NB-IoT is being extensively utilised under the
National Smart Grid Mission
(NSGM), which envisages the conversion of 222.4 million meters into prepaid smart meters. However, just 32.90 million smart meters, or about 14.8%, have been deployed across India, according to the latest data available on the NSGM dashboard.
'Telecom service providers in India are further investing in upgrading the underlying network infrastructure, including 4G and NB-IoT networks. This improved connectivity will encourage the adoption of cloud platforms and services, offering greater scalability and flexibility for utilities companies,' IDC analysts Nikhil Batra and Swathi Arunaa said in the report.
NB-IoT provides cellular-based connectivity with wide coverage and low power consumption, making it ideal for large-scale smart metering deployments, the analysts said.
'By investing in reliable connectivity solutions, utilities can ensure the seamless integration of AMI and smart metering into their operations, thereby driving the success of India's National Smart Grid Mission,' according to the analysts.
The country's top telecom carriers, Reliance Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea (Vi), are all bullish on the growth prospects of IoT which has become central to their enterprise segment strategy.
Gopal Vittal, vice chairman & managing director of Airtel, at the telco's most recent post-earnings conference call said, 'We continue to add muscle to our digital portfolio with cloud…cybersecurity, financial services, IoT and CPaaS and all of these are getting additional investments.'
For instance, Secure Meters in partnership with
Airtel Business
has successfully deployed 1.7 million NB-IoT smart meters across Bihar. Secure has developed its own smart meters with NB IoT communication module, head end system, and meter data management system, which have been integrated with Airtel's IoT platform to ensure seamless cellular connectivity.
This large-scale deployment is supported by Airtel's (NB-IoT/GPRS) network, and includes a network feasibility tool and a SIM services management portal to assist Secure in effectively planning and implementing smart meter installations.

Jio may outshine Airtel in June quarter revenue growth

Mumbai: Reliance Jio may have outdone Bharti Airtel on overall revenue and per-user revenue growth in the first quarter ended June, driven by a strong addition of higher paying fixed wireless access (FWA) home broadband users, analysts said. Market leader Jio's average revenue per user (ARPU) is expected to grow 1.8% quarter-on-quarter to '210 for the June quarter, boosted by the addition of 2 million FWA users out of a likely net addition of 7.2 million users, estimates by JM Financial showed. Airtel is set to report a higher ARPU of '249, but its growth rate would be lower at 1.6%, the brokerage said. Vodafone Idea (Vi) is also expected to see ARPU improvement of 1.6% for the first quarter to '167 due to upgrades and improved subscriber mix and aided by one more day in April-June quarter compared to the preceding three months. Analysts also expect the struggling telco to largely hold on to its user base on a net base - a first in a long time - backed mainly by a wider 4G network. Live Events To be sure, the flow through of price hikes made by telecom companies have been fully absorbed by now and the next round of increases can only be expected next year, equity research firm BofA Securities said in its report. The brokerage expects telcos to raise tariffs by around 12% then. Airtel's wireless services revenues are expected to grow 2.6% on-quarter to '27,305 crore while its consolidated net profit is expected to jump 47% to '7,690 crore mainly due to strong mobile broadband additions. JM Financial expects the telco to post a strong mobile broadband subscriber addition of 5.5 million in the June quarter, down from 6.6 million in the March quarter, while its overall subs addition is pegged at 2.3 million. BofA in a report said, "We estimate (Airtel's) first quarter enterprise revenues again to be impacted as the company is exiting the low margin commodity wholesale voice business." Loss-making Vi is predicted to close the first quarter with flat numbers as it scales up 4G services and expands 5G roll outs. "With an improving network coverage, we expect VIL to report a largely flattish user base (versus declining net subscriber adds in the past). As one of the world's top five e-waste generators, India faces the dual responsibility of sustaining its digital growth while addressing its growing environmental footprint. According to the Global E-Waste Monitor 2020 by the United Nations University, India generated 3.2 million tons of e-waste in 20191, with that figure rising steadily. Alarmingly, less than 10% of this waste is formally collected and processed, underscoring the urgent need for integrated, technology-led solution may lie in embracing Supply Chain 4.0—a forward-looking, technology-driven model that integrates artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, and big data analytics into supply chain management. Global research trends show that Supply Chain 4.0 can significantly accelerate sustainability by enabling smart, connected, and circular supply networks. In India's context, these digital supply chains can revolutionise how electronic products are manufactured, tracked, used, and responsibly returned or instance, blockchain-based systems can ensure end-to-end traceability of products, enforcing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and reducing reliance on unregulated recycling practices. IoT-enabled devices can signal when a product is approaching obsolescence or malfunction, triggering automated reverse logistics for repair, reuse, or environmentally safe recycling. Real-time data analytics can forecast waste generation patterns, optimise maintenance and refurbishment cycles, and strengthen secondary markets for reconditioned electronics, generating employment and reducing environmental while technology is essential, it cannot operate in isolation. For India to fully realise the potential of digital circularity, it must also invest in robust policies, skilled human capital, and collaborative ecosystems. A national framework is needed to incentivise circular business models, standardise data-sharing protocols, and mandate eco-design principles for electronic Indian corporations are already setting benchmarks by integrating these principles. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has implemented a closed-loop IT asset recovery system that connects internal hardware tracking with certified recycling vendors. Hindustan Unilever, in collaboration with Hyderabad-based Recykal, has launched digital recovery programs for plastics and e-waste through mobile platforms linked to consumers and retail outlets. Dell India operates a nationwide take-back initiative—'Reconnect'—that promotes responsible consumer returns and certified recycling. Similarly, MG Motor India has partnered with Attero Recycling to create a digitally traceable supply chain for end-of-life electric vehicle batteries, establishing India's leadership in sustainable EV waste these examples, policy frameworks must evolve to support nationwide adoption of digital traceability. While the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022 mark progress by enforcing producer collection targets, they lack the digital infrastructure necessary for comprehensive enforcement. A National E-Waste Digital Registry, modelled after the European Union's proposed Digital Product Passport, could ensure unique identification and lifecycle tracking of electronic products through QR codes or RFID tags. Financial incentives—akin to those under the FAME II scheme for electric mobility—should be extended to encourage investment in digital take-back systems, particularly for standardised blockchain protocols must be developed for authenticating EPR compliance and building trust among recyclers, manufacturers, and regulators, as recommended by NITI Aayog. The National Data Governance Framework, spearheaded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), should include provisions for secure, interoperable data sharing across e-waste platforms. Equally important is human capital. To sustain these systems, India needs a digitally skilled workforce trained in IoT systems, data analytics, and reverse logistics. These competencies should be integrated into the Skill India Mission and aligned with the National Education Policy growing academic presence in Supply Chain 4.0 research signals its readiness to lead. The challenge now is translating this intellectual capital into real-world applications that make e-waste management data-driven, seamless, and inclusive. Embedding sustainability into our digital infrastructure will not only mitigate environmental harm but also create green jobs, boost competitiveness, and position India as a leader in sustainable innovation across the Global the right policy push and ecosystem support, India can turn its e-waste crisis into a green trillion-dollar opportunity, redefining its digital growth as not only fast but also future-ready and environmentally
