A Boston police officer was hit by a driver, who then fled the crash, according to police.
The chase began in Boston's theater district. At some point, the driver hit the officer and then kept going, police say. They say that the driver had crashed into at least one other car. Officers followed the car close behind, but did not initiate an official pursuit. The driver was eventually arrested in the South End.
"The cop was like, 'She started downtown." It's like wait what? And you're stopping her here? And then somebody's telling me that they can't chase them around the city," witness Joshua Paul said. "You can't let that go on through the city. They could have been killing people along the way. You got to stop them when that happens."
The officer was taken to a Boston hospital to be looked at, but officials say that they appeared to be uninjured. There are no other injuries reported.
Witnesses say that they saw the woman drive up one-way streets in the South End.
"We just happened to look out the window, and there was this car in shambles and a woman on the ground with her hands cuffed behind her back. It's not unordinary to see someone sort of maybe driving too fast. But this is, you know, off the charts," Paul said.
The damage to the car was extensive

The driver's car was seen with extensive damage before it was towed. The front good was jammed open, the airbags had been deployed, and the car was on its rims.
There were also parts of the vehicle throughout the South End.
Boston Police are investigating. There is no more information available.

17-year-old injured in stray bullet shooting near NYC's Stonewall Inn released from hospital

A 17-year-old girl who was struck by a stray bullet near New York City's Stonewall Inn on Sunday night is out of the hospital, but faces a long road to recovery. The gunfire erupted just after 10 p.m. as Pride festivities were winding down. Police say a 16-year-old girl opened fire on a rival group, and a stray bullet struck the 17-year-old girl. The 16-year-old was then unintentionally shot in the head by another gunman from her own group. According to police, that 16-year-old remains hospitalized in critical condition. So far, no charges have been filed and no arrests have been made. "I'm very angry" CBS News New York's Naveen Dhaliwal spoke with the innocent bystander's mother, who says she's grateful her daughter is alive. "It's devastating. It's scary. It's scary," mother Star Lopez said. "But I have her with me." Lopez said her daughter has to use a wheelchair and go to physical therapy three times a week while she recovers. "I'm very angry. Am I disappointed at the world? Yes, I'm very disappointed," she said. Lopez said she doesn't know what to say to the shooters at this time. "My concern is my kid," she said. While angry, Lopez says she thankful for two good Samaritans and police officers who kept her daughter safe as she was shocked and bleeding. "I just want to tell you thank you. I don't know who they are, but I am very, very grateful for them," she said. "You don't see that nowadays ... The two female officers and the two individuals that helped her, that covered her. I really am grateful."

Abrego Garcia severely mistreated in El Salvador prison, his lawyers say

By Kanishka Singh WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the migrant returned to the U.S. in early June after being wrongfully deported to his native El Salvador, reported severe mistreatment in a high-security prison in the Latin American nation, according to a court filing on Wednesday. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT Wednesday's filing in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland marked the first time Abrego Garcia gave a first-hand description of his experience at the Salvadoran prison CECOT. A Maryland resident whose wife and young child are U.S. citizens, he was deported on March 15 to El Salvador, despite a 2019 immigration court ruling that he not be sent there because he could be persecuted by gangs. Officials called his removal an "administrative error." KEY QUOTE "Plaintiff Abrego Garcia reports that he was subjected to severe mistreatment upon arrival at CECOT, including but not limited to severe beatings, severe sleep deprivation, inadequate nutrition, and psychological torture," his lawyers said in the filing, adding he lost 31 pounds in his first two weeks there. CONTEXT Critics of U.S. President Donald Trump pointed to the case as evidence his administration was prioritizing increased deportations over due process, the principle that people in the U.S., whether citizens or not, can contest governmental actions against them in courts. Trump has pledged to crack down on illegal immigration and says Abrego Garcia belongs to the MS-13 gang - an accusation his lawyers deny. The Department of Homeland Security on Wednesday reiterated U.S. accusations against him in an online post. The Justice Department brought Abrego Garcia back to the U.S. on June 6 after securing an indictment charging him with working with at least five co-conspirators as part of a smuggling ring to bring immigrants to the U.S. illegally. He has pleaded not guilty and the government says it plans to deport him again. He is currently detained in Tennessee while his criminal case is pending.

Community steps up to help replace stolen items from South Jersey Sandlot

A community effort is underway in South Jersey to help replace equipment and other items stolen from a beloved neighborhood sandlot. Ryan Boyle, who helped organize the community field where more than a dozen neighborhood kids play wiffle ball in Glendora, said the field was the target of thieves last week. Boyle said a police report was filed with Gloucester Township police after bats, balls, a pitching mound and more were stolen from the field last Thursday night. He also captured the suspects in the act on a home surveillance camera. "Knowing that there are people out there willing to do this does make you nervous," Boyle said. The sandlot has become a safe haven for kids. Jackson Yost, 13, who is one of the many kids who play on the field, said he was disappointed to hear some of their equipment was stolen. "It hurt a lot," he said. The games, which have continued to grow, have caught the attention of community groups, and many of the items that were stolen were donated to the kids, Boyle said. But within days of the theft, Boyle said the community stepped up in a big way, helping Boyle and the kids replace the some of the stolen items by donating a new backstop, another pitching mound and other pieces of equipment. "Seeing all of this really makes you thankful for the good people in the community," he said. And for kids like Yost, the act of kindness gives them the drive to keep playing no matter what. "They can steal all they want and we can keep playing," he said.
