Will Ubisoft finally take a stand against sexism, or will their legacy of inaction continue to live on?

For years, Ubisoft has faced allegations of fostering a toxic and sexist workplace culture. The company's top executives recent convictions for psychological and sexual harassment have reignited scrutiny over Ubisoft's work environment.
With a history of empty promises and half-measures being taken, the question is whether the company is actually committed to change or if the inaction would still persist.
Ubisoft's former executives got convicted in the landmark trial
A French court has recently sentenced Ubisoft's three former executives for enabling a culture of harassment. An ex-editorial VP at Ubisoft, Thomas François, received the harshest penalty, which included three years of suspended prison along with €30,000 fine.
The reasons cited were psychological abuse, sexual harassment, and attempted assault. Amidst disturbing allegations that came to light was his forcing a female employee to perform a headstand in the skirt while tying the other to the chair.
In defense, he stated,
'There was a culture of joking.'
As per him, he never intended to hurt anyone. The verdict was not accepted.

Former Chief Creative Officer Serge Hascoët was fined €45,000 ($75,000) and was handed an 18-month suspension sentence for being an accomplice to psychological harassment and sexual harassment. The behavior that got him to trial was the humiliation of female assistants with degrading tasks like picking up his daughter, forcing his mail and more. As per reports, in his defense, he said,
'I was not aware of any bullying that was taking place in the workplace.'

Lastly, the former game director at Ubisoft, Guillaume Patrux, even got convicted for workplace bullying. He received a 12-month suspended sentence with €10,000. He was accused of varied harassing behavior, including drawing swastikas on a notebook of a woman in a meeting, cracking whips near the faces of colleagues and more. Just like the other 2, even Patrux has denied all charges, but the court did note the intensity of his actions.
Despite all the verdicts, Ubisoft has been on mute. As per the company's claims, there was no knowledge of any ongoing legal proceedings. In the rare moment of taking accountability, this now is a troubling stance for the corporation, which once promised reforms. According to the victim, this is a systemic issue within the organization, and this has been long ignored.
Ubisoft's history of ignoring all complaints
The problems of Ubisoft are not new. In 2020, some anonymous employee testimonies exposed systemic sexism.
It led to internal investigations and even some high-profile resignations. Yet, as per the claims of victims, the response of the company was performative. The HR repeatedly dismissed all their complaints, with a manager allegedly stating, 'If you can't work with him, maybe it's time for you to leave.'
Even the
employees of Ubisoft
have spoken out against the sexist environment within the workplace. A woman featured on the company's Women of Ubisoft series admitted that she noticed an indifference to how women and men were treated.
While she did praise some progress, she didn't forget to acknowledge how the studio still remains male-dominated, with lingering biases.
Despite making pledges to bring in reforms, a report suggests very little has changed. An employee survey conducted in 2021 revealed that 25% of the Ubisoft staff experienced or witnessed misconduct, and yet, as per many, HR fails to act on it.
Ubisoft after the allegations
Coming to the recent case, as reported by Libération, Maude Beckers, the lawyer who represented victims, called the verdict a message to all companies. It was further added in the statement,
'The company seems to have transformed into a large playground for creatives, where what they call a "schoolboy atmosphere" was tolerated, where people played tag, where sexual gestures were allowed in the workplace, where women were pinned to the floor...HR knew all this and systematically covered up the cases. What is exceptional... is the complicity... white-collar employees."
Ubisoft sexism culture goes beyond offices
Sexism in Ubisoft is not confined to offices. It has been reflected in the games, too. As per reports, some former employees reveal that Assassin's Creed Odyssey's protagonist was originally supposed to be a female (Kassandra) until the executives insisted and said,
'Women don't sell.'
Quite similarly, and reportedly, Assassin's Creed Unity's developers, too, claimed that adding female characters would double the work despite the evidence that the required effort was quite minimal. Despite the female leads like Evie Frye (Syndicate) got included, they got sidelined within gameplay and marketing.
A Ubisoft employee in 2018 admitted that she noticed men weren't as straightforward with their female colleagues as they were with the male.
As for her, she was not comfortable being treated differently just for being a woman.
Why sexism continues to persist in the gaming world?
Developers quite often have cited production constraints to be the reasons for excluding women within character designs and workplace policies. Once, Ubisoft even claimed that adding female assassins within Assassin's Creed Unity would double the work, despite the industry experts debunking the claims to just be an excuse.
Others have argued that male-dominated industry inherently resists change.
A former employee described the boys club mentality in the Paris office, where harassment got dismissed as just jokes. There were some executives who even justified misconduct, claiming it was just part of the creative culture. They implied toxicity was necessary for innovations.
Ubisoft's past controversies and many broken promises
Ubisoft has a track record that's riddled with controversies. Be it Assassin's Creed Odyssey's protagonist or Watch Dogs Legion backlash, the company has failed to handle concerns the right way.
While the case of Assassin's Creed Odyssey has been explained above, the backlash related to Watch Dogs Legion began as the company removed Helen Lewis, a journalist's voice, from the game after there were accusations of transphobia.
It raised questions about performative allyship.
Even the lack of female leads, despite fan demand, getting sidelined in favor of the male counterparts just keeps adding fuel to the entire controversies against Ubisoft.
The truth, as per many experts, is that there's a false assumption that male protagonists appeal much more to the players. It's even been argued by Anita Sarkeesian, a critic, that if we accept to heal hot dogs and ancient aliens, why not the female soldiers? But the answers to these questions have been found nowhere.
How many more sexism cases remain hidden in Ubisoft?
While the current incidents, including one from 2020, where five former employees of Ubisoft got arrested after allegations of systemic abuse surfaced, there are many who fear that they are just the tip of the iceberg.
With the history of Ubisoft to downplay complaints, it is unclear how many victims have chosen to stay silent because of the fear of retaliation.
The game industry overall, even today, struggles with accountability. As noted during the trial by prosecutor Henri Oshalter, 'there are systemic sexism elements and abuse in the video game industry along with its subcultures.' The case was even called 'a turning point for the entire video game industry.'
Will Ubisoft
have a turning point now, or will it be more empty words?
Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft's CEO, previously vowed "profound changes," but the skepticism still continues to remain. With past promises, including mandatory anti-harassment training, seem to have done little for dismantling entrenched sexism, experts, including insiders, doubt if still there would be any solid impact.
Despite what's been said and done, the truth is, until Ubisoft is ready for taking some concrete action, like elevating the women to the leadership roles, using transparent routes when addressing past failures and enforcing the zero-tolerance policies, Ubisoft's legacy of action would continue to be unchecked. For now, the only question that lingers is, Will Ubisoft finally bring change, or would it be a cautionary tale of corporate indifference?

Liquor shop named ‘Court Complex Vend' told to shift

Gurgaon: A liquor shop named "Court Complex Liquor Vend" in Sonipat was ordered to relocate by a court that termed the nomenclature "disparaging" to the institution of justice. The vend, situated in front of the judicial court complex in Kharkhoda in Sonipat, drew severe criticism for its location and name. The controversy began when a group of lawyers filed a suit alleging "public nuisance" caused by the liquor outlet. They complained about "unsocial elements" gathering at the court's main gate and intoxicated customers entering the premises as well, at times. "Drinking in a public place is an offence, and the judicial court complex has been made a permanent place for committing this offence by the excise and taxation department," said Kamal Sharma, the counsel representing the lawyers. He added that littering of empty bottles and food waste had compromised the complex's cleanliness. During the hearing, the excise department argued that it had issued the liquor vend a valid licence and officially named it "Court Complex Liquor Vend". But additional civil judge (senior division) Vikrant noted that while the department could decide the vend's location, naming a liquor shop after a reputable institution or landmark could diminish the respect the society attached to such places. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If you have a mouse, play this game for 1 minute Navy Quest Undo "The excise department must remember that naming a liquor shop after any reputable institution may harm the societal worth attached to such an institution," the judge observed. In a strongly worded order, the court said, "Identifying the court complex with a liquor shop is not only undignified vis-à-vis the sanctity attached to the court, commonly called the 'Temple of Justice', but it severely impairs the honour attached to the institution of judiciary." Further investigation revealed that the vend had not obtained necessary permission from local authorities — as required under the excise policy. On July 18, the court ordered the shop to be sealed. The vend owners later produced the required permissions and proposed relocating the shop to Old Sonipat Road. After the excise department issued an NOC, the court allowed the shop to remove stocks and facilitate the relocation on Aug 2. The vend has since been moved to its new location on Old Sonipat Road.

2 drivers found dead in a parked car, CO poisoning suspected

Noida: Two cab drivers were found dead inside a parked car near National Institute of Biology in Sector 62 on Monday afternoon, with police suspecting carbon monoxide poisoning as the cause of death. The bodies of Sachin Sharma (27) and Lakshmi Shankar (50) — both residents of Khoda Colony in Ghaziabad — were discovered after family members broke the car's window. The families of the two drivers — friends for almost a decade — started looking for them after they did not return home on Sunday night. "They searched for them all night without success. Calls to Sachin's mobile phone went unanswered as well. Around 2pm on Monday, locals informed the family about Sachin's car parked near a private institution," a senior police officer told TOI. You Can Also Check: Noida AQI | Weather in Noida | Bank Holidays in Noida | Public Holidays in Noida After unsuccessful attempts to rouse the occupants of the car for about 10 minutes, the family informed the Sector 58 police station. "After we broke the car's windows, we found both of them dead. There were no injury marks. We suspect they fell asleep with the AC running in the CNG car. When the fuel ran out, the AC would have switched off automatically, leading to carbon monoxide buildup inside the sealed vehicle," an investigating officer said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Access all TV channels anywhere, anytime Techno Mag Learn More Undo Fellow cab driver Ravi said both friends were known to drink heavily. "They probably consumed liquor inside the car with the AC on and fell into deep sleep. They might have tried to escape when the gas filled the car, but couldn't open the door," he said. A forensic team collected evidence from the scene, and sent both bodies for an autopsy. The families were yet to file any formal complaint till late on Monday evening. Police said they would wait for the autopsy report to ascertain the exact cause of death. "To piece together the sequence of events, we have started examining footage from CCTV cameras installed around the spot. We found they were good friends and their friendship was about a decade old. A lot of cab drivers park their cars along the roadside," an officer said. Amit Kakran, the SHO of Sector 58 police station, emphasised the dangers of sleeping in cars with the AC on. "This incident should serve as a warning. Sleeping in a closed car with AC running can be fatal due to carbon monoxide buildup. Always ensure proper ventilation, keep the windows slightly open, and use CO detectors if possible," he advised.

TRIBAL MESSIAH WITH ‘MAGICAL' POWERS

1 2 Among tribal people, mainly Santhals, he was a cult figure with 'magical' powers. During the 70s, when tribals were subjected to ruthless exploitation by greedy moneylenders and landlords, he emerged like a messiah for them. He started attacking moneylenders and forcibly started harvesting crops on lands of tribals usurped by "Dikus (outsiders)". The saviour of tribals made them realize that their exploiters were not invincible. The Shibu juggernaut rolled on in Jharkhand and the tribals started believing that their saviour had some supernatural powers and was omnipresent. "Guruji is addressing a rally in Dumka today and he is also addressing rallies at Palajori, Kathikund, Litti Para and other places at the same time... Santhals from rural areas used to say during Jharkhand Diwas rallies on February 2 in Dumka way back in 70s and early 80s. He used to start his address around 7-8pm and continued it till the wee hours of the morning. The tribals listened to his fiery speeches throughout the night," Godai Swarnkar, an old-timer, said. Guruji, as JMM supremo Shibu Soren is affectionately called, had acquired an image like Phantom, the ghost who walks. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Best SIP Plans for NRIs in Netherlands – Get ₹2L Monthly Pension | Invest ₹18K PB Learn More Undo He had himself admitted this once while talking to this reporter. "During my fight against moneylenders, several cases were lodged against me and police had launched massive hunt for me. Suraj and I used to hide in remote villages. I had a motorcycle then and Suraj was my constant companion. When we used to enter villages in the dead of night, people used to think two ghosts had arrived," he had said. He later gifted the bike to his secretay Vinod Pandey. However, he retained his jeep he had used during Jharkhand movement. Suraj Mandal. then a JMM leader who later became a JMM MP, was Shibu's right-hand man during those days. Later, he parted ways with Shibu and slowly faded into oblivion. Soren's life witnessed vicissitudes of fortunes. JMM bribery case, Shashikant Jha murder case, Chirudih massacre case kept haunting him for a long time. But his popularity among tribals remained undiminished. The tribal hero led a spartan lifestyle. He was a teetotaller and a strict vegetarian. "I love sleeping on the floor," he had once said. When asked how he maintains such a mop of wavy hair and a flowing beard, he had said: "I use 'multani mitti' and you people use shampoo. Here lies the difference." He even suggested this reporter to go to nearby Sainthia in West Bengal. "There is a mound of multani mitti just outside Sainthia. Go and collect it," he had said. Guruji had rustic sense of humour and had once made fun of death also. While going for a chopper ride to Masalia, about 40 km from Dumka, to address a poll rally during 2009 assembly polls, Vinod Pandey had suggested this reporter to accompany Guruji on chopper and interview him. Guruji had jokingly said: "The condition of this chopper is bad and it can crash on the way. I am old now and it doesn't matter if I perish in a crash. He is a young man and he should not take the risk." The autumn of the patriarch began in 1995 when his eldest son Durga Soren won the Jama assembly seat. He started calling the shots within the party. He died in 2009. After Durga's death, his younger brother Hemant Soren took over as the successor of Guruji. This led to family feud as Durga's widow Sita Soren was unhappy with Hemant's move. She later joined BJP, but lost Jama assembly polls to JMM Candidate Lois Marandi in 2024 assembly polls. Guruji slowly started to keep himself out of the limelight. On April 15, 2025, Hemant became party president, replacing Shibu. It can be said to be the end of Shibu era in JMM. But Guruji was and will remain the biggest crowd-puller for JMM in days to come. He did not actively campaigned for the party in 2024 assembly polls, but JMM flags with his familiar face and bow and arrow party symbol, kept fluttering in remote areas of the state. JMM formed government in the state later, reminding people that his charisma remained intact.
