Kota Kinabalu: Kota Kinabalu Warisan Information Chief Samuel Wong called for stricter inspections on vape shops, nightlife venues and border checkpoints to prevent a dangerous new vaping substance known as piao piao from entering Sabah. He made the call following viral videos from Peninsular Malaysia showing users suffering severe reactions, including seizures, loss of bodily control and even fatalities. In one case, a 50-year-old man in Johor died after allegedly using a vape laced with the synthetic drug. 'This is a serious threat,' said Samuel, in a statement, Wednesday. 'Sabah has no reported cases yet, but without stronger enforcement, it is only a matter of time before this deadly substance reaches our communities,' he said. He claimed that piao piao is circulating through illegal vape sellers and unregulated online platforms, making pre-emptive action essential.

Samuel urged the public, especially young people, against taking the risks, saying 'Do not try it, not even once. It is not worth risking your life. Think of your family and your future.' 'We hope Sabah stays untouched by this wave. But hope alone is not enough, we need swift action from the authorities and personal responsibility from every citizen,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Why you should wash new clothes before wearing them

Published on: Monday, June 23, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 23, 2025 Text Size: Liu (inset) advises the public to always wash new clothes before wearing them. IT is best not to wear new clothes immediately after purchase, according to Taiwanese health expert Dr Liu Po-Jen. Liu, a nutrition and functional medicine expert, recently advised the public, in a Facebook post, to always wash new clothes, particularly undergarments, before wearing them. He explained that new garments often contain chemical residues from the manufacturing process, such as formaldehyde and leftover dyes. These substances are used to prevent wrinkles, shrinkage, and maintain the shape of the clothes, but they can irritate the skin and cause allergic reactions, rashes, or itching. Liu also highlighted the concern that new clothes are exposed to various environments, including factories, warehouses, trucks, and store shelves, picking up dust, bacteria, and mould spores along the way. This is especially true for undergarments and baby clothes, which require extra attention to hygiene, he noted. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Mental health is a shared societal responsibility: Arifin

Published on: Monday, June 23, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 23, 2025 By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Mental well-being must be seen as a collective responsibility, forming the backbone of a healthy and balanced society, said Sabah Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif ( pic ) on Monday. Speaking at the Regional Webinar on Psychological and Spiritual Well-being 2025 hosted by Ipdas, Arifin stressed the link between community wellness and a stable psychological foundation. He cited 2022 Health Ministry data showing alarming rates of depression (26.9 per cent), loneliness (16.2 per cent), and suicidal thoughts (13.1 per cent) among Malaysian teenagers, calling it a national concern requiring urgent integrated action. Arifin argued that psychology and spirituality must be addressed together, warning that neglecting one undermines the other and weakens community resilience. He said mental health is a core element of the Sabah Maju Jaya plan, aligning with national Madani efforts to embed emotional and spiritual well-being into development policies. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
