Coinbase to launch CFTC-compliant perpetual futures trading in US
With crypto markets buoyed by hopes of lighter regulation and a renewed risk appetite, exchanges are racing to capitalize on the frenzy by rolling out complex products that were once used primarily by seasoned traders.
"We recently launched first-of-its-kind 24/7 futures trading, and I'm excited to share that we'll soon be launching CFTC-compliant perpetual futures trading in the U.S. as well," Max Branzburg, Coinbase's vice-president of product, said at the State of Crypto Summit in New York.
Perpetual futures are crypto derivatives that allow traders to bet on token prices without an expiry date and offer round-the-clock access and high leverage, making them a popular choice in fast-moving markets.
Investors and traders typically use derivatives to hedge risk, amplify returns, or speculate on price movements without owning the underlying asset.

Oil falls on signs of weak US demand ahead of key jobs report
Oil prices eased on Thursday, reversing gains from the previous session, on concerns over weak U.S. demand after government data showed a surprise build in inventories in the world's biggest crude consumer. Brent crude futures fell 24 cents, or 0.35 per cent, to $68.87 a barrel by 0044 GMT after gaining 3 per cent on Wednesday. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude fell 24 cents, or 0.36 per cent, to $67.21 a barrel after climbing 3.1 per cent previously. The U.S. Energy Information Administration said on Wednesday domestic crude inventories rose by 3.8 million barrels to 419 million barrels last week. Analysts in a Reuters poll had expected a drawdown of 1.8 million barrels. Gasoline demand dropped to 8.6 million barrels per day, prompting concerns about consumption in the peak U.S. summer driving season. Both benchmarks gained on Wednesday after Iran enacted a law suspending cooperation with the U.N. nuclear watchdog, raising concerns the lingering dispute over the Middle East producer's nuclear program may once again devolve into armed conflict. Additionally, the U.S. and Vietnam reached a trade deal that sets 20 per cent tariffs on many of the Southeast Asian country's exports, giving investors a sense of greater economic stability on international trade which could flow into higher demand for oil. The market will be watching the release of the key U.S. monthly employment report on Thursday to shape expectations around the depth and timing of interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve in the second half of this year, analysts said. Lower interest rates could spur economic activity, which would in turn boost oil demand. A private payrolls report on Wednesday showed a contraction for the first time in two year though analysts cautioned there is no correlation between it and the government data.

Activist Starboard Value takes stake in online travel company Tripadvisor, stock jumps
Activist investor Starboard Value has built an over 9 per cent stake in online travel firm Tripadvisor, a person familiar with the matter said on Wednesday. News of Starboard's stake, which is valued at roughly $160 million, pushed Tripadvisor's share price up 7 per cent in after hours trading. The company, which offers search tools to find and review hotels and restaurants, has seen its share price drop roughly 15 per cent in the last 12 months. In early 2024, Tripadvisor's board formed a special committee to explore options, including a possible sale. Tripadvisor and Starboard, which often presses for operational changes at its targets, did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment. The Wall Street Journal first reported the news on Wednesday evening. Starboard is one of the industry's busiest activist investors, and its chief executive officer, Jeffrey Smith, recently joined the board of consumer healthcare company Kenvue, the maker of Band-Aids and Tylenol. The firm has also pushed for changes at pharmaceutical company Pfizer and design-software maker Autodesk. The Wall Street Journal reported Starboard will likely make a 13D regulatory filing as soon as Thursday, a requirement for asset managers whose holdings exceed 5 per cent in a particular company where they plan to push for changes.
