Indian Army boosts firepower with two deep strike Pinaka rocket regiments

NEW DELHI: Adding to its deep and quick strike capability, the Indian Army is set to raise two more regiments of the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher (MBRL) system in the coming months. The Army is also expected to receive the equipment for two additional regiments by the end of this year. Currently, six Pinaka regiments are already operational along the northern border with China and the western border with Pakistan.
'The training of the troops is underway for the two regiments which will be fully operational in next few months,' a source in the defence and security establishment told TNIE. The source added, 'We are also expecting that the launchers, equipment and systems for the remaining two units will be delivered by end of this year and if everything goes as planned, they will become operational in the first half of 2026.'
In artillery terms, a "unit" is also called a "regiment." Each regiment has three batteries, and each battery includes six Pinaka launchers.
At the current pace, the number of Pinaka regiments will increase to eight this year and is expected to reach ten regiments by 2026.
'The equipment will be allotted to the other two regiments by the end of this year,' sources said, adding that the training for these regiments will begin soon. Initially, troops will train with the older regiments and later independently until they are fully operational.
A battery of six Pinaka launchers can fire 72 rockets in just 44 seconds, destroying enemy targets across an area of 1000 metres by 800 metres.

Russia Assures More S-400 Air Defence System Delivery To India, Lauds Role In Operation Sindoor Russia has assured India of the timely delivery of the remaining S-400 air defence systems during a high-level bilateral meeting between Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his Russian counterpart Andrey Belousov. Out of five ordered units, three S-400 squadrons have already been delivered. The remaining two will be handed over soon, according to Russia. The S-400s played a critical role in India's success during Operation Sindoor by neutralising enemy missiles and drones. The $5.43 billion deal signed in 2018 marks one of India's most advanced defence procurements. Russia reaffirmed its strategic partnership with India and expressed condolences for the recent Ahmedabad air crash. Southern Command unveils first geothermal net zero building in Jhansi

In a step towards building climate-conscious defence infrastructure, the Pune-headquartered Southern Command of the Indian Army on Thursday inaugurated the nation's first geothermal-based net zero energy building at Jhansi. The online inauguration of the infrastructure was done by Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Command, at Pune, underscoring the Army's leadership in adopting advanced and green technologies. 'This innovative facility, constructed in less than four months, harnesses geothermal energy by exchanging heat with the earth to maintain a naturally balanced internal environment, significantly reducing external energy reliance. The project is a critical step in support of the government's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2047, with the building estimated to offset over 50 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually,' read a press statement from the Army. 'The building's net zero energy credentials were independently assessed and validated by the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Calicut. The institute confirmed that the structure achieves complete annual energy neutrality through its integration of geothermal and solar systems, efficient design, and intelligent energy management, reinforcing its standing as a pioneering model in sustainable defence infrastructure,' the release added. Equipped with smart lighting and energy-efficient automation, including light and motion sensors and a solar rooftop system, the building is designed for minimal power consumption and sustained operations even in off-grid conditions, officials said. 'The project exemplifies the spirit of the Year of Technology Absorption, showcasing rapid construction, use of alternative materials, and integration of sustainable systems. It also sets a benchmark for future development of green buildings in remote and forward locations, where energy independence and environmental performance are mission critical requirements,' the release stated.
