Deadwood, S.D. (KELO) –The 2025 Governor's Ag Summit kicked off in Deadwood Tuesday as agriculture leaders from across the state gathered to discuss the current state of ag from east to west.
Crash closed parts of I-29, 12th Street Tuesday night
Glenn Muller was named this year's Governors Ag Ambassador for his decades long contributions in both pork and South Dakota agriculture.
'We see the need to produce food for the world actually and it's just great to see these people get together and talk about common concerns and common benefits of the agriculture industry for the state of South Dakota and beyond.' SD Pork Producers Executive Director Glenn Muller Said
Cattle population across the nation has been down, however that has benefited ranchers here in the state.
'It has led to some very high markets and that has been a huge benefit to the producers in South Dakota and you know there's a lot of things at play but right now the ranchers have really been doing well with their markets the last couple of years.' Governor Larry Rhoden Said
When looking at the future, being able to inspire and motivate the next generation of ag workers is important.
'It's going to be a limited number of individuals that are going to be starting up from the grass roots and starting from the ground up but there's a lot of opportunities out here in agriculture. We need these good young producers and young agricultural interested individuals to get involved .' Muller Said
The Keep Farmers Farming program was a big part of these conversations.
'…and helping the entire family transition through to the next generation because that's what agriculture in South Dakota is all about, is the next generation and how to keep our young people on the farms and give them the ability to move forward.' Governor Rhoden Said
The Governor's Ag Summit will continue in Deadwood tomorrow with more speakers and current obstacles on the table.
