A placid fishing trip turned "berserk" for three New Zealand men when a dolphin weighing more than 900 pounds appeared to fall out of the sky before crash-landing in their small boat.
No one was badly hurt when the 11-foot bottlenose dolphin jumped aboard the open-top boat Friday, said Dean Harrison, the owner of the nearly 16-foot vessel.
Harrison and two companions were fishing near the Hole in the Rock, a picturesque spot off the far north coast of New Zealand's North Island, while dolphins frolicked ahead. The men saw a shadow across the bright summer sun and heard an almighty boom — before chaos unfolded.
"This one decided to jump on board and say hello," Harrison said. "One minute everything was fine and then just like lightning striking, there's a big dolphin in our boat thrashing around and breaking everything."
The creature's flailing snapped "every single fishing rod we had in the boat" and severely damaged the bow as the trio clung to the sides of the vessel, said Harrison. One man had minor injuries to his arm where the juvenile male dolphin grazed his back and shoulder, but all three fishermen and the dolphin were otherwise uninjured.
But returning the majestic creature to the sea was not an option for the trio due to its size.
"We looked at the dolphin still alive and breathing and we thought, we've got to start looking after him and figure out what to do," Harrison said. "Because he's stuck in the boat for now, so he's coming along for the ride."
The men alerted New Zealand's conservation agency and were directed to a boat ramp an hour away, where workers waited to help the dolphin. On the way, the trio used a hose to keep the creature wet and protected it from the sun using a damp towel depicting players from the All Blacks rugby team.
On shore, members of a local Māori tribe prayed for the dolphin before it was returned to the ocean using a tractor. Helpers gave the 2- 3-year-old creature a name: Tohu, which means "sign" in the Māori language.
Tohu is now also the name of Dean Harrison's boat.
"The dolphin got to swim away and we got to walk away and we've all got a story to tell," he said. "It's a good ending in a situation that could have been very different."
Large marine creatures have made sudden -- and scary -- appearances on boats before.
Last year, a whale leapt out of the water off the coast of New Hampshire, capsizing a boat and sending two fishermen flying into the ocean. Two teenagers nearby, one who recorded video of the incident, came to their immediate rescue.
In August 2022, a large mako shark jumped out of the water and landed on the deck of a fishing boat off the coast of Maine. About a month before that, a woman was stabbed by the bill of a 100-pound sailfish that jumped out of the water and attacked her as her companions were trying to reel it in on a boat near the Florida coast.

After surviving a shark attack and drifting into unfamiliar waters, a young seal's life hung on by a thread — until rescuers rushed to help. The animal, a New Zealand fur seal, was discovered in the canals of Newport, Australia, located about 20 miles north of Brisbane, according to a July 31 news release from the Sea World Foundation. She had sustained 'a severe shark bite wound' on her abdomen and was outside the normal range of her species. Sea World staffers collected the wounded creature and took her to a rehabilitation facility. She 'was really touch and go there at the beginning,' Claire Madden, the organization's head veterinarian, said in a video. But, after six weeks, her condition improved remarkably. 'She ticked all the boxes for our release, and that included adequate body condition, appropriate movement and her wound was completely resolved,' Madden said. On July 29, the healed seal was transported to the Solitary Islands, part of a marine park about 240 miles south of Brisbane. Video footage shows her exiting a submerged crate and swimming away into the deep ocean. 'It made me very, very happy to see her go back out there and carry on her little adventure,' Jesse Bray, a marine mammal specialist at the Sea World Foundation, said in the video. 'It's a really special moment.' Before her release, she was equipped with a satellite tag, allowing researchers to monitor her journey. So far, she's already traveled about 50 miles south to Scotts Head. New Zealand fur seals are distinguished by their pointy noses, long whiskers and relatively small size, according to the New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC). The marine mammals — which can grow up to 8 feet and weigh up to 330 pounds — are typically found along the rocky coast of New Zealand. They are also seen in South Australia and Western Australia. Their population in New Zealand once numbered in the millions, according to the DOC, but they nearly went extinct as a result of Māori and European hunters. Nowadays, their numbers are rebounding, following protections passed in the 1970s. They still face threats from human impacts, in addition to great white and sevengill sharks, their primary natural predators.

Volunteers braved the elements to help bring nature closer to the classroom at John Mahood Public School for the first microforest in Elmira. Sustainable Waterloo Region (SWR) planted a microforest at the school in May. Each microforest costs $6,000, with this project being funded by the Township of Woolwich. Anna Harrison, Woolwich's climate action & sustainability coordinator, told The Observer that microforests give a small urban area 'a chance to be returned to a kind of more naturalized state through planting trees, particularly native trees and shrubs.' Sustainable Waterloo Region (SWR) has been planting microforests since 2021, and with the John Mahood project its first foray into Woolwich. The organization defines a microforest as a small area of land that is returned to a natural state through the planting of native trees and shrubs. Microforests are planted on non-developable land and can be as small as a city residential building lot of some 500 square feet. Despite the rainy weather on that day in May, the volunteer team planted 100 trees and shrubs in the schoolyard. After funding fell through for the Woolwich project, the township stepped up, noting the planting was a in line with sustainability and climate-action goals, said Harrison. 'They came to us to see if we would be able to help, seeing as though the school was in our community, and we are more than happy to help because we have those strong ties to sustainability within the township, and trees are just inherently really important to Woolwich.' Harrison added that, being in a predominantly rural and agricultural township, Woolwich is very fortunate to have many community groups that are dedicated to tree planting. The project worked well with the goals of groups such as Trees for Woolwich and Reforest Woolwich. 'When this opportunity came up, it was a really good fit for us, and something that we were more than happy to support and fund,' she said. Microforests provide numerous social and economic benefits, including providing shade and reducing wind effects, removing air pollutants, and improving community and neighbourhood aesthetics. Microforests can also be a great tool to combat greenhouse gas emissions because trees absorb and store carbon dioxide, with older trees being able to store more, added Harrison. 'They can also provide shade during extreme weather events as a result of climate change, and can also help reduce flooding in some areas.' She noted such projects are about 'more than just planting trees.' 'It's about engaging with our community and creating that long-term environmental impact. From wild nests to the Auckland Zoo, the rarest bird in New Zealand just wrapped up its breeding season — and it was a 'successful and exciting chapter.' Tara iti, or New Zealand fairy terns, are a small, nationally critically endangered species with fewer than 45 adult birds living in the wild. 'Every chick is precious,' wildlife experts said in a June 18 news release from the Department of Conservation, making annual breeding programs essential for survival of the species in Aotearoa, the Māori name for New Zealand. 'Thanks to intensive management of wild nests and a growing hand-rearing program with Auckland Zoo, this season saw 19 fledglings take to the skies,' officials said. 'This is a significant improvement from last year's nine, and just three the year before.' The tara iti season began in December, when there were fewer than 35 terns remaining, officials said, but there were nine active nests and 25 eggs by the middle of the month. By February, 10 chicks had already fledged into the wild, joining the other shorebirds surviving on their own, wildlife officials said. 'We're pleased with how the season is progressing, but there's still a long way to go,' Department of Conservation ranger Nikki Hartley said in February. Once on their own, the birds are known to take significant flights, officials said. One young bird, for example, traveled more than 1,000 miles across four flights while wearing a small tracking 'backpack,' officials said. The birds weigh just 2.5 ounces but can cross significant distances of land and sea. 'Post-breeding season monitoring recorded 50 individual tara iti (up from 33 individuals last season), including 28 adults, nine sub-adults and 13 fledglings,' officials said. One of the birds spotted flying about was a young female that had been hand-reared during the 2023-2024 breeding season, according to the release. 'She survived the winter months, making her the first hand-reared bird known to have done so,' Department of Conservation senior ranger Alex Wilson said in the release. 'Each fledgling is a step forward, and the information we're collecting helps us understand how to get the best outcomes from our recovery efforts.' The tara iti live on New Zealand's North Island, east of Australia in the south Pacific Ocean.
