Maharashtra: Ajit Pawar directs effective implementation of ‘Manhole to Machinehole' scheme
Under the scheme, drains, sewer lines, and septic tanks will be cleaned using mechanised equipment. The scheme includes procurement of cleaning machinery, modern vehicles, and emergency response sanitation units.
Ajit Pawar, who chaired the meeting to discuss the issues concerning sanitation workers, said the scheme is being implemented by the urban development department with an approved funding of Rs 504 crore.
He said that an additional 100 crore was sanctioned in the Monsoon Session of 2024–25 and disbursed to the department by March 31, 2025.
Procurement of robotic units, cleaning equipment, and emergency vehicles has also begun. He directed that maintenance of these vehicles for three years and training of sanitation workers for operating them must be ensured by the respective agency.
The meeting on Wednesday came days after Ajit Pawar had told the state assembly during the monsoon session that the government will implement a time bound programme to completely stop the manual scavenging and cleaning drains and severe lines across Maharashtra by replacing it by machines.
He had also assured the House that the government will make available necessary funds.
'Under the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Shram Safalya Awas Yojana, dwelling units are provided free of cost and on ownership basis to the eligible heirs of conservancy workers post their retirement or in the event of death while in service. At present, the benefit is extended only to sanitation workers who have completed 25 years or more of service,' said Ajit Pawar.
He directed the Urban Development Department to prepare a proposal to reduce this service requirement from 25 years to 20 years and present it before the Cabinet.
"The state government resolution issued based on the recommendations of the Lad-Page Committee must be implemented by all municipal corporations and councils at the earliest. Failure to comply will attract strict action," he warned.
He further instructed that every municipal corporation and council must submit a detailed report to the Urban Development Department regarding the number of sanitation workers currently employed in their jurisdiction.

As the name suggests, the Lok Sabha is truly the House of the people, representing citizens from all walks of life. I feel honoured to represent the constituents of Sangrur, a region known for its political awareness and spirit of experimentation. Having been a two-time MLA and a cabinet minister in Punjab, I have been working at the grassroots level for a long time, but my tenure as an MP has brought a new kind of energy, motivating me as well as testing the best in me at times. I am fully committed to my role and thoroughly living every moment. What was the high point of the year for you personally or your party in the House? Being an MP offers no dull moments – each day is engaging and unique in its own right. However, I do feel that the BJP government's legislative agenda has been heavily influenced by select interest groups, often neglecting the concerns of the common man. My focus has been to raise the demands and concerns of the common people. I have consistently upheld the promise I made to my voters of being the voice of the common man in Parliament. I am using my MPLAD funds for projects that drive long-term development rather than for short-term optics. A key initiative involves Sansarpur, a historic village known for producing numerous hockey Olympians, which lacked an astroturf due to administrative delays. This issue has been taken up with the central government. Are you satisfied with the number of sittings of the Lok Sabha, and why or why not? We are the world's largest democracy, where every voice deserves to be heard. In the 1980s and 1990s, parliamentary sessions were longer and often included double sittings. BJP's politics is such that anyone who seeks accountability from them is dubbed as anti-national. While the government blames the Opposition for disruptions, it is their responsibility to ensure the House functions. The BJP has two to three leaders who make remarks that cause chaos and adjournments. If India wishes to achieve the aspirations of its youth, their representatives and institutions need to work in mission mode. What is the most effective way to raise issues of public importance in the House? I have been a student of politics and Parliamentary procedures since my teenage years. Over time, I have adopted core values — maintaining parliamentary decorum, avoiding personal attacks, and showing respect to individuals across political ideologies. At the same time, I remain clear and assertive in expressing my ideological beliefs and in advocating for the public's agenda. This balanced approach has helped me ensure the effective resolution of constituency matters, even from the opposition benches. What difference have you made to your constituency in the last one year, and what do you plan to do in the remaining term as MP? Unlike the previous MP from Sangrur, Simranjit Singh Mann, I have remained constantly active on the ground, regularly engaging with my constituents regularly. When I resigned from the post of cabinet minister after winning the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, there were ongoing infrastructure projects in Barnala, Dhanuala and other areas. These projects have been my top priority. A new sports stadium complex is underway in Dhanaula. One major achievement has been the approval of the long-pending Malwa-Chandigarh rail link, which was delayed due to a legacy political family in Punjab. Through constant persuasion and use of parliamentary tools, I, along with a few other MPs, have succeeded in getting its approval from the Railways. In Parliament, I have consistently raised issues related to central funds for Punjab, a national-level educational institution for Sangrur, and support for farmers and agro-based industries. $15,000 visa bond: US tightens rules for visitors from overstay countries
Soon, visitors to the US could be asked to pay bonds of up to $15,000. Starting August 20, 2025, the United States could start requiring bonds of up to $15,000 (Rs 13 lakh) for certain tourist and business visa applicants. The move is part of a pilot programme to discourage visitors from overstaying their visas, according to a government notice seen by Business Standard on Monday. Under this programme, US consular officers will be given the authority to impose bonds on visitors from countries with high rates of visa overstays or where screening and vetting information is considered inadequate. Which visas are affected and who decides? The programme applies to B-1 (business) and B-2 (tourist) visas. Consular officers will have discretion to impose bonds of $5,000, $10,000, or $15,000, but the default expectation is $10,000, the notice said. These funds will be refunded if the traveller leaves the US within the permitted time. This initiative is linked to Executive Order 14159, 'Protecting The American People Against Invasion,' which directs the Departments of Treasury, State, and Homeland Security to establish a bond administration system under the Immigration and Nationality Act. A spokesperson for the State Department said countries will be identified based on 'high overstay rates, screening and vetting deficiencies, concerns regarding acquisition of citizenship by investment without a residency requirement, and foreign policy considerations.' The countries likely to be impacted While no formal list has been published yet, the notice mentioned that countries with high visa overstay rates, particularly in Africa and Asia, are under scrutiny. Nations previously targeted by Trump's travel ban—including Chad, Eritrea, Haiti, Myanmar, and Yemen—are also likely candidates. Customs and Border Protection data for fiscal year 2023 showed that countries like Burundi, Djibouti, and Togo recorded high overstay rates. Additionally, 12,882 Indian nationals on leisure or business trips overstayed their visas in 2023, as per the US Entry/Exit Overstay Report. When does the programme start and how long will it run? The pilot programme will go into effect on August 20 and is expected to run for about a year. A similar attempt was made in November 2020 during the final months of Trump's first term but was never fully rolled out due to pandemic-related travel disruptions. Trump's immigration crackdown continues Former US President Donald Trump has consistently focused on tightening immigration controls. He issued a travel ban in June that restricted entry for citizens of 19 countries on national security grounds. These actions have already impacted travel trends—transatlantic airfares in May dropped to pre-pandemic levels, while travel from Canada and Mexico to the US fell 20% year-on-year. $250 visa integrity fee adds another layer Alongside the visa bond pilot, a $250 'visa integrity fee' will be introduced on October 1. This fee, passed as part of a spending package in July, will be charged to all non-immigrant visa applicants once their visa is approved. The U.S. Travel Association has voiced concerns, saying, 'If implemented, the U.S. will have one of, if not the highest, visitor visa fees in the world.' The group estimates that around 2,000 applicants from a handful of countries with low travel volume to the US will be affected by the bond programme.
