Taipei sets up first HIMARS unit

Russia Todaya day ago
The self-governing island of Taiwan has created a military unit armed with US-made HIMARS multiple rocket launchers, in the first such case ever, the Defense Ministry said in a statement on Friday. The weapons systems were supplied to the island by Washington last year.
The unit's commissioning ceremony was attended by Taipei's defense minister, Wellington Koo, who said the new company's soldiers and officers underwent training in the US.
According to media reports, the HIMARS systems supplied to Taipei can fire GMLRS missiles with a range of up to 80km and ATACMS missiles with a range of up to 300km. It is unclear if both types were also provided.
Taipei reportedly ordered a total of 29 HIMARS systems from the US, 11 of which have already been delivered. In mid-May, the Taiwanese military conducted the first live-fire HIMARS drill at a local base. The systems were also tested in June.
In January, US President Donald Trump's then-national security adviser, Mike Waltz, said Washington planned to increase the pace of weapons deliveries to the self-governed Chinese region.
According to Waltz, the US wants to equip Taiwan with asymmetric defense capabilities, such as mobile missile systems, drones, and advanced surveillance technologies to raise the potential costs for China if it tries to take control over the island by force.
China considers Taiwan part of its territory under the One-China principle, and insists on eventual reunification. According to the Chinese government, peaceful reunification is preferable, but it reserves the right to use force if necessary.
Taiwan has been self-governed since 1949, when nationalist forces retreated to the island after losing the Chinese Civil War. Most nations, including Russia, recognize Taiwan as part of China.
Beijing has condemned US arms sales to Taipei as destabilizing and provocative. In response, China has conducted frequent naval and air drills around the island.

US deports ‘barbaric criminals' to African state

The United States has deported eight people it labeled 'barbaric criminal illegal aliens' to South Sudan, a country the US State Department warns against visiting due to rampant crime, kidnappings, and armed conflict. The Department of Homeland Security announced the move on Saturday in a press release that included photos and details of the men – one South Sudanese national and the others from Cuba, Laos, Mexico, Myanmar, and Vietnam. All had been convicted of crimes including murder, sexual assault, and robbery, and were either nearing the end of their prison sentences or had already completed them. 'These sickos were finally deported to South Sudan on Independence Day,' Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said, adding that they are 'so heinous even their own countries will not accept them.' The US Supreme Court allowed President Donald Trump's administration to proceed with the removal of the men, who were initially held at a military base in Djibouti for weeks after a district court judge in Massachusetts blocked the deportations. Since returning to office in January, Trump has reinstated a series of hardline immigration measures, following through on campaign promises to reverse what he described as the 'open border' policies of his predecessor, Joe Biden. In February, the Homeland Security moved to expand rapid deportations to third countries, prompting immigrant rights groups to file a class-action lawsuit on behalf of migrants facing removal without notice or a chance to plead their case. In April, US District Judge Brian Murphy ruled that deporting immigrants to nations other than their home countries without due process 'unquestionably' violated constitutional protections. However, late last month, the Supreme Court's conservative majority ruled that the White House could proceed with the fast-track deportations, effectively overturning Judge Murphy's earlier order. On Saturday, McLaughlin hailed the South Sudan removal as a 'win for the rule of law, safety and security of the American people,' while also accusing 'activist judges' of putting US law enforcement in 'danger' by delaying the move for weeks. South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011 but has remained unstable since a five-year civil war ended in 2018. Renewed political tensions had sparked fears of another civil war, prompting the US to withdraw non-emergency personnel from its embassy in Africa's newest nation in March. In April, Washington revoked all visas issued to South Sudanese passport holders, stating that no new ones would be granted, thus barring the country's nationals from the US. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio claimed the landlocked nation had refused to accept deported nationals and said the US would consider reviewing the measure once the East African country fully cooperates.

Ukrainian MP blames corruption for troops fleeing army

Widespread corruption and extortion of combat pay by military commanders are driving Ukrainian soldiers to abandon their units, Ukrainian MP Anna Skorokhod has claimed. In a video posted last week on her YouTube channel, Skorokhod accused Ukrainian commanders of exploiting soldiers by falsely registering them as serving on the front lines in order to claim additional payments, which the officers then seize. According to the MP, the commanders also often use the soldiers to 'build houses or renovate new apartments' while making sure they receive combat pay, which is then surrendered to their superiors. 'Or the soldiers are simply being extorted, because they supposedly get 100,000 hryvnia [$2,400], but there is no command, so they are forced to give up money.' Skorokhod said the soldiers have few ways to address these grievances, resulting in recurring AWOLs. 'Because when there's nowhere to turn, no one listens or wants to listen, people simply gather in platoons, in groups, and leave because they will not tolerate this.' Last month, Ukrainian journalist Vladimir Boyko reported that there have been more than 213,000 registered cases of unauthorized abandonment of military units in Ukraine. He noted that these figures only account for cases where criminal proceedings have been initiated, suggesting the actual numbers may be higher. Meanwhile, there have been concerns in Kiev that the cash-strapped country, which is to a significant extent dependent on Western economic aid, could struggle to compensate its military. In April, Ekonomicheskaya Pravda reported that funds initially allocated for military salaries in the latter part of 2025 were redirected to purchase drones, ammunition, and other weaponry. In May, the first deputy chairman of the parliamentary finance committee, Yaroslav Zheleznyak, suggested that Ukraine faced a 400 billion hryvnia ($9.6 billion) shortfall in defense spending, which he said requires budget revisions. In addition to recurring AWOLs, Ukraine has been struggling with its forced mobilization campaign, which often leads to violent clashes between reluctant recruits and draft officers.

Recently vandalized UK warplanes are foreign assets – ex-envoy to RT (VIDEO)

The Royal Air Force warplanes defaced by pro-Palestinian activists last month are owned not by the British government but a US hedge fund, prominent human-rights activist Craig Murray has alleged. He added that at least some of the planes appear to be routinely leased out to the Israeli military. In June, several activists from the group Palestine Action broke into Brize Norton, the UK's largest airbase, and sprayed red paint into the turbines of two Voyager aircraft before fleeing the scene undetected. The group said the stunt was a protest against the supposed involvement of the Royal Air Force in Israel's military operation in Gaza. The British authorities vowed to prosecute those responsible. Speaking to RT on Sunday, Murray, who served as British ambassador to Uzbekistan from 2002 till 2004 and is an associate of WikiLeaks' co-founder Julian Assange, said that he had discovered that the planes in question were owned by Airtanker Ltd, which, in turn, is supposedly 'owned by a string of seven fake companies.' According to Murray, behind the cutout entities stands a US hedge fund named Polygon Global Partners LLP, which is the real owner of the planes. He claimed that the entity 'has joint interests with the Trump organization and BlackRock,' which has stakes in several military industrial giants. The former British diplomat told RT that of the 14 planes in question 'nine are permanently with the RAF, and five of them are sometimes with the RAF, and sometimes can be leased out to other foreign militaries, including the Israeli military.' 'It seems to be fairly definite that the Israelis are using these planes. These planes have been frequently flying to [the RAF Akrotiri airbase in Cyprus] which has been the main military support base for Israeli activities into Gaza,' Murray claimed. He added that officials in London refuse to either confirm or deny that such military missions are carried out in support of Israel. On top of that, according to Murray, the British 'taxpayer is being ripped off' as under the contract with Polygon Global, the UK government is 'paying five times the value of these planes.' He said the agreement expires in 2049. In the wake of the vandalism, UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced plans to designate the activist group as a terrorist organization and ban it.
