New Zealand pummel Pakistan in Nations Cup final
KUALA LUMPUR: New Zealandhammered Pakistan 6-2 to retain the Nations Cup title at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Saturday.
In winning the tournament, the Kiwis will be promoted to play in the FIH Pro League 2025/26.
The Black Sticks scored two goals in the first six minutes, but both the goals were disallowed after video referral.
But the former Olympics champions kept creating chances, and scored five goals through Scott Cosslett (sixth, 58th), Sam Hiha (15th), Dylan Thomas (17th), Sean Findlay (18th) and Scott Boyde (27th).
Pakistan replied through Zikriya Hayat (36th) and Sufyan Khan (59th).
New Zealand coach Greg Nicol said: "We played an incredible game and with aggression. We didn't give Pakistan any cheap turnovers. We took our chances well."
Pakistan coach Tahir Zaman said: "We didn't have a good start, but we managed to get the two goals in the last two quarters. We have inconsistency problem in our game."
In an earlier match, France finished third after edging South Korea 3-2 in a penalty shootout. Both teams were tied 3-3 in regulation time.

KUALA LUMPUR: Rosman Razak appears to be the compass that will decide the direction of national women's doubles Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah. That is how former international Datuk Rashid Sidek sees it. Pearly-Thinaah could leave BAM and turn professional if they don't sign a contract extension with the national body. Rosman is Pearly-Thinaah's coach, and as long as he is with them, the world No 3 pair will follow him. So if national women's doubles coach Rosman remains with BAM, they are expected to continue staying there too. Rashid feels that since Pearly-Thinaah have shown much improvement under Rosman, it's unlikely they pack up and leave their coach to turn professional. Rosman, who formed the Pearly-Thinaah combination in 2019, made a return to BAM last November, and this led to Pearly-Thinaah rising to world No. 3, winning the Thailand Open last month and finishing runners-up at the Indonesia Masters and Indonesia Open. The duo will meet with BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz tomorrow in a move to resolve their contract impasse. "Rosman is an integral part of Pearly-Thinaah's progress. They will definitely remain with BAM for as long as he is there," said Rashid. "They have been showing good progress and I don't think Pearly and Thinaah will want to leave the ideal facilities offered by BAM. "Furthermore, Rosman has pledged to stay until 2028, and Pearly-Thinaah need his guidance if they want to push for a medal at the Los Angeles Olympics." Rashid also feels that Pearly-Thinaah's presence is needed at BAM to help improve the other pairs in the national team. "Pearly-Thinaah have set the benchmark and are an inspiration to the rest of the women's doubles squad. The younger pairs need a world-class combination to look up to. BAM boss to have contract powwow with Pearly-Thinaah
KUALA LUMPUR: BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz will seek to end the national association's contract wrangle with women's pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah in a meeting tomorrow. According to sources with knowledge of the matter, Tengku Zafrul will hold talks with Pearly-Thinaah at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM). World No. 3 Pearly-Thinaah have yet to sign a new deal with BAM after their previous contracts expired in December. The duo were said to have asked for additional perks in their new contracts (scheduled to run until 2028). But BAM has insisted that its new offers for both the players were better than the previous contracts. Pearly-Thinaah are said to be contemplating becoming an independent pair due to offers from outside BAM. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul is back in the country after leading a Malaysian delegation for trade talk with the United States recently. Earlier, Tengku Zafrul met with Pearly and Thinaah at the ABM on June 13, where he stated that it's important to keep the duo and other top shuttlers in the BAM stable. Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, who has urged Pearly-Thinaah to stay with BAM and focus on winning gold at the 2028 Olympics, had also urged the national body to settle the contract issue fast.

Former Olympian Kevin Nunis buried in Kuala Lumpur today
FORMER national hockey player and Olympian Muhammad Khairy Nunis Abdullah, better known as Kevin Christopher Nunis, was buried this morning at the Taman Sri Sinar Muslim cemetery at 10.45 am. His remains were first brought to Surau Silaturrahim Taman Segambut SSPK for funeral prayers, attended by around 200 people, including family, friends, colleagues, and local residents. Among those present were his wife, Rahimah Awang Mohd, their three children, and grandchildren. Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) president Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal and National Athletes Welfare Foundation (YAKEB) chairman Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail also paid their respects. Subahan described Nunis' passing as a significant loss to Malaysian hockey. 'His contributions were immense, not just as a player but also as a coach in the National Hockey Development Programme (NHDP),' he told Bernama. Nunis, a Negeri Sembilan native, passed away at Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) yesterday at 6.45 pm after battling a blood infection for several months. A key player in the 1980s national squad, he represented Malaysia at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, Asian Games in India (1982) and South Korea (1986), and SEA Games in Singapore (1983), Jakarta (1987), and Kuala Lumpur (1989).
