Best of BS Opinion: Finding clarity in a shifting economic spectrum
Take the sharp twist in India's FDI story. On paper, $81 billion sounds like a gold rush, but zoom out and the prism reveals a streak of nervous exits: $51 billion repatriated, and Indian companies themselves rushing abroad, notes our first editorial. The net number, just $0.35 billion, isn't a whisper, it's an alarm. Foreign investors seem unsure whether India's glow is real or refracted. At the same time, Indian firms are chasing confidence offshore, reflecting a deeper discomfort at home.
And yet, right alongside, corporate earnings shimmer with hints of revival. In Q4FY25, profits quietly rose and taxes paid surged nearly 14 per cent, a sign of businesses stepping out of the shadows. Capital goods, logistics, and pharma sectors bounced back with double-digit PAT growth. FMCG and IT still feel the squeeze, but this broad-based upturn could be the start of a new business cycle, highlights our second editorial. Not a spotlight moment, but a refracted, emerging glow.
But what happens when we stare too hard at numbers without adjusting the lens? R Kavita Rao breaks down India's tax gaps, not just what's missing, but why we might be misreading it. Strong in personal and consumption taxes, weaker in corporate and trade, India's performance isn't bad, but it's not benchmark-proof either. Differences in exemptions, valuation, and regime structure mean we must resist lazy comparisons. It's not about sharpening the magnifier, it's about tilting the prism.
Meanwhile, Himanshu Pathak and P K Joshi take us to the fields, where Indian agriculture dreams big. Food surpluses mask shrinking land, drying wells, and climate uncertainty. The path to a developed nation by 2047 runs through AI-driven seeds, smart irrigation, and agri-entrepreneurship. Innovation isn't just a light bulb, it's a spectrum of actions, from lab to land.
And as Gunjan Singh reviews The Political Thought of Xi Jinping by Steve Tsang and Olivia Cheung, we see a different kind of prism, ideological, rigid, curated. Xi's China refracts every citizen through the Party's lens. Individual identity dissolves into national narrative. History is shaped not by what happened, but by how it's illuminated. In Xi's vision, the state is the sole source of light, and shadows aren't allowed.
Stay tuned, and remember, the world isn't monochrome, it's full-spectrum!

ShareChat & Moj Announce Second Edition of 'Short Form Big Impact Leadership Summit 2025'
Industry leaders to decode how cultural insights and regional storytelling unlock India's next growth wave MUMBAI, India and GURUGRAM, India, July 29, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- ShareChat & Moj, India's leading homegrown social media platforms, in partnership with ETBrandEquity, today announced the second edition of the 'Short Form Big Impact Leadership Summit 2025'. The flagship event will bring together industry leaders, marketers, and decision-makers to explore how brands can harness cultural intelligence and regional storytelling to unlock growth in India's rapidly expanding regional markets. The summit will be held in Mumbai at Taj Lands End, Bandra, on August 21, 2025, and in Gurugram at The Oberoi on August 28, 2025, under the theme "Culture Is the New Consumer Intelligence." With 86% of Indians preferring content in their native language and 88% finding local language advertisements more impactful, India's consumer landscape demands a fundamental shift from demographic-based to culture-first marketing approaches. The opportunity is significant, with 6 in 10 digital users now coming from non-metro regions, representing an unprecedented $1 trillion market opportunity. Short-form content has evolved beyond entertainment to become a lifestyle choice, influencing daily conversations, brand discovery, and purchase decisions across regional India. This transformation has paved the way for micro-dramas – structured, serialized storytelling tailored to Indian languages and cultural contexts. ShareChat's ecosystem, including the newly launched QuickTV, is leading this evolution with over 30 million viewers consuming 120 million micro-drama episodes daily, demonstrating the massive appetite for culturally relevant, snackable content. "At ETBrandEquity, we believe that the future of brand storytelling lies in cultural intelligence — not just consumer data," said Amit Kumar Gupta, Business Head of "The second edition of the Short Form Big Impact Leadership Summit is a rallying ground for brands to learn how to connect authentically and effectively with regional India through short-form content." Manohar Charan, Co-Founder & CFO, ShareChat & Moj, says, "India's digital audiences aren't just defined by demographics, they're shaped by culture. From language and rituals to regional creators and micro-storytelling, we're seeing a deep shift in how people connect, consume, and act. The Short Form Big Impact Leadership Summit is where this transformation takes centre stage. With the 'Culture is the New Consumer Intelligence' theme, we're inviting the industry to look beyond formats and into the emotional pulse of India. If you're building for relevance, trust, and scale in this market, this is where the real conversation begins." The summit will feature keynote presentations, panel discussions, and case study showcases covering critical topics including: • Rewriting the Playbook: Where Culture Becomes Intelligence • Culture, Content & Creators: The 3Cs of Building Brands • Building Brands in a Short-Form World • From Daily Soaps to Daily Scrolls: Micro-Dramas as India's New Prime Time • Regional Voice: The Power of Real, Relatable Content Attendees will receive actionable insights on developing cultural intelligence frameworks, implementing language-first storytelling strategies, creating festival marketing playbooks, and building authentic creator partnership models. The summit is designed for senior marketing professionals, brand managers, agency leaders, and decision-makers focused on regional market expansion. Limited to 200 participants per city, early bird registration is available until August 1, 2025. Anand Mahindra, Chairman of the Mahindra Group, took to X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday to express his pride and offer congratulations to the newly appointed CEO of Procter and Gamble (P&G). Shailesh Jejurikar, an Indian-origin executive, is named as the CEO of the American consumer goods company. In the X post, Mahindra lauded P&B as a 'brand-building powerhouse that has defined consumer behavior for generations.' He also highlighted Jejurikar's appointment as further proof of the impactful presence of Indian-American leaders. 'Indian-American leaders can navigate not just tech, but the hearts and minds of US consumers,' he added. The statement underscores the growing influence of Indian-origin professionals across diverse sectors globally. The news carried a special resonance for the Mahindra Group. As Mahindra revealed, 'This news has special meaning for us at@MahindraRise because Shailesh happens to be the younger brother of our very own Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director and CEO (Auto & Farm Sector) M&M Ltd.' Rajesh Jejurikar is the older brother of Shailesh Jejurikar, who has been serving as an executive in M&M for the last 25 years. This familial connection made the achievement a matter of 'extended family' pride for the Mahindra group. Mahindra concluded his heartfelt message with a congratulations to Jejurikar and urging him to 'Keep Rising!' Shailesh Jejurikar, 58, completed his schooling in Hyderabad and later pursued an MBA at IIM Lucknow. He joined P&G in 1989, immediately after completing his MBA, as an assistant brand manager for Personal Health Care in India. However, he quickly rose through the ranks and became a key figure in the company's global operations. Jejurikar will assume his new role on January 1, 2026, replacing Jon Moeller, Mint reported earlier.
