Anti-austerity demonstration sees thousands protest Labour spending cuts in London
Thousands have gathered in central London to protest government spending cuts and welfare reforms, in a demonstration organised to send a message to ministers.
The People's Assembly, the campaign group behind the event, anticipated a large turnout of trade unionists, campaigners, and activists. Among those on the slate to address the rally in Whitehall were MPs Jeremy Corbyn and Diane Abbott.
Organisers have criticised the government for implementing spending cuts that disproportionately affect the most vulnerable members of society.
Representatives from various organisations, including the National Education Union, Revolutionary Communist Party, Green Party, and the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union, were present at the march's starting point in Portland Place.
The march commenced towards Whitehall shortly before 1pm, with a significant crowd participating.
Many of the protesters were holding placards that read 'Tax the rich, stop the cuts – welfare not warfare'.
Other signs being held aloft said 'Nurses not nukes' and 'Cut war, not welfare'.
A People's Assembly spokesperson said: 'The adherence to 'fiscal rules' traps us in a public service funding crisis, increasing poverty, worsening mental health and freezing public sector pay.
'Scrapping winter fuel payments, keeping the Tory two-child benefit cap, abandoning Waspi women, cutting £5 billion of welfare by limiting Pip and universal credit eligibility, and slashing UK foreign aid from 0.5% to 0.3% of GDP, while increasing defence spending to 2.5% of GDP, are presented as 'tough choices'.
'Real tough choices would be for a Labour government to tax the rich and their hidden wealth, to fund public services, fair pay, investment in communities and the NHS.'
The People's Assembly said it is bringing together trade unionists, health, disability, housing, and welfare campaigners with community organisations under the slogan: No to Austerity2.0.
There will be also be speeches from trade union leaders, disability rights activists, anti-poverty campaigners and groups calling for more investment in the NHS and other public services.
The spokesperson added: 'We face a growing threat from the far right, fuelled by racism, division and failed politics. We need to see people's lives improve, we need to see the vulnerable cared for and an end to child poverty.
'On June 7, we march for education, for our NHS, for welfare, for refugees, against hate, and for a society in which our children can flourish.'

'We miss vital NHS appointments over post delays'
A man says he and his unwell mother have gone almost two months without receiving critical NHS appointment letters due to ongoing postal delivery failures in south London. Amit Marwaha, who lives with his mum in a flat in Hackbridge, claimed since April they had not received letters in the post which had led to missed appointments. "I have diabetes, high blood pressure, and I've had a bad infection recently. My mum has diabetes too. She needs those appointments, and they're just not arriving," he said. Royal Mail told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that deliveries to Amit Marwaha's address had been taking place as normal and the company took "the timely delivery of mail very seriously". Mr Marwaha, who has lived in the property for 20 years, said he has also received multiple letters intended for others, including neighbours and people living on entirely different streets. As a result, Mr Marwaha said his mother was "panicking" about where her private health information might be being delivered to. Alongside the NHS letters, they are also missing financial documents, including bank statements and utility bills, and worry that sensitive information could also be misdelivered, he said. Mr Marwaha said his mother was "really behind on her bills" after not receiving them. "My neighbour has come to give me my letters sent to their house," he said. "They said I would receive all my mail in 72 hours after I complained, but none of it came," he said. "They've never even come back to me or said sorry." Last week, it was reported that Royal Mail performance data shows 71% of first-class post in Sutton, where Hackbridge is located, was delivered on time between January and March 2024, far below the 93% legal target. In a bid to confirm something was wrong, he posted a letter to himself almost four weeks ago. "It still hasn't come," he said. "I knew then something was wrong. "I would like to get my mail, so would my neighbours. It's really stressed me out." Royal Mail said, according to its records, post was delivered to Mr Marwaha's address on five separate occasions between 12 and 23 June. A spokesperson said "extra safeguards" had been put in to ensure post was delivered to his flat. "Two long-serving postmen, who are familiar with the residents and their circumstances, regularly speak with the customers and let them know whether or not mail has arrived that day," they added. Glastonbury Organiser Says Those Who Don't Agree With Festival's Politics 'Can Go Elsewhere'
Michael Eavis has insisted that politics still play an important part of Glastonbury's identity. The 89-year-old festival founder was recently interviewed by the Glastonbury Free Press about whether he thinks that the huge-scale music event still stands for something (as reported by The Guardian). 'Oh heaven's above, yes, of course it does,' he said. 'And I think the people that come here are into all those things.' Slimming group wins top UK award thanks to Port Glasgow 'boy done good'
A Port Glasgow slimming group has won a prestigious UK award at a glittering ceremony. A PORT slimming consultant has won a prestigious UK award at a glittering ceremony. Joe Glancy's local group were crowned Slimming World's Group of the Year 2025 at the big bash in Birmingham - beating off competition from more than 11,500 groups and 4,000 consultants across the UK and Ireland. The group's members, who meet every Saturday at St Mary's Episcopal Church in Port Glasgow, have lost more than 400 stone between them this year. "And then having to make a speech to 1,000 people was very emotional. As far as I am aware I was the first ever Scottish winner.
