
Newcastle fans concerned about club's survey on changing crest
Newcastle said its current crest was "created in a different era" and that its intricate design does not always "translate well in today's digital world".
The club invited season ticket holders and members to share their views in what they described as an independently run survey, but Newcastle United Supporters Trust has reservations about the survey.
"The survey is framed in an incredibly leading manner throughout and it is hard to see how any meaningful fan engagement or reliable conclusions can be drawn from it," it said in a letter to club CEO Darren Eales.
The trust also pointed to a clause in the Football Association's rules which states that a club must be in a position to prove that the majority of its supporters are in favour of a material change to its club crest prior to making any such change.
"As it stands, the survey is not able to provide information on whether the majority of our supporters are open to the idea of making a material change," it added.
"To comply with FA rules, we strongly urge you as a club to provide a new survey, written in a neutral tone and to include an option for supporters to indicate that they do not wish to pursue any change at all."
The current crest, which has been in use since 1988, has elements from the city's Coat of Arms like the castle, the demi-lion, the two seahorses on the side and a pennon.
"As the crest is a recognised Heritage Asset and a vital symbol that unites our city, we simply ask that the consultation process strictly adheres to FA guidance," the trust said.

RMAF to get new defence assets from October
SHAH ALAM: The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) will begin receiving several new defence assets and systems in stages starting this October, continuing through to the end of 2028. Outgoing RMAF chief General Tan Sri Mohd Asghar Khan Goriman Khan said the acquisitions include unmanned aerial systems (UAS), FA-50 Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), maritime patrol aircraft (MPA), air defence radars and new helicopters. He said these procurements are part of the RMAF Capability Development Plan 2055 (CAP55), as outlined in the Defence White Paper, and are expected to significantly boost the nation's overall defence capabilities. "In summary, several systems and platforms such as UAS, FA-50 LCA, MPA, air defence radars and new helicopters are currently in the procurement process and will begin entering the RMAF inventory from October this year, with more to follow in 2026, 2027 and by the end of 2028. "These assets will enhance RMAF's ability to defend our national airspace," he said at the new RMAF chief pinning-of-ranks and change-of-command ceremony at Subang Air Base. Asghar, who is set to end his service this Dec 26, is succeeded by his deputy, General Datuk Seri Muhamad Norazlan Aris as the 21st RMAF chief. Asghar said that since taking over leadership of the RMAF on March 7, 2022, various efforts have been undertaken to ensure the airforce remains a credible, modern and capable force in defending the nation's skies. "All the policies and directions laid out in my Commander's Order were based on six core pillars – capability enhancement, organisational excellence, empowerment of personnel, resource management, industry collaboration, and welfare sustainability. "Alhamdulillah, during my tenure, we successfully implemented several of the planned initiatives outlined in CAP55," he said. He added that strengthening the training structure and human capital development was also prioritised, with officers and personnel sent for various courses both locally and abroad to ensure operational readiness remained at the highest level. He said the RMAF's active role in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations, along with hosting international exhibitions such as the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2023 and 2025, had effectively showcased its capabilities on the regional and global stages. These achievements, he said, have elevated the RMAF's standing as a key driver of air defence diplomacy and helped strengthen military ties with friendly nations. Asghar said the welfare of RMAF personnel was never sidelined, with various initiatives implemented, including housing, mental health care and family support programmes. "The well-being of our personnel, who form the backbone of the force, has always been given due attention," he said. Asghar also expressed his appreciation to all RMAF personnel, whom he credited for their unwavering cooperation in ensuring the success of all plans during his tenure as the service's top commander.

Man City's third-placed finish may be better achievement than title win, Guardiola says
BARCELONA: Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola described his team's first trophyless campaign since 2017 as a season of growth and reflection, dismissing notions of failure and suggesting it may have been a greater achievement than a previous title win. "I want to suffer when I'm not winning games," Guardiola told Reuters in an exclusive interview. "I want to feel bad. I want to sleep badly. I want that when the situation goes bad, it affects me... I want that! "I'm angry... my food, it tastes worse... I don't need to eat much because I need to feel that (anger). Because if it doesn't, what sense would it have? Winning or losing... We're here in this world to feel different experiences, different moods." The 54-year-old, who has won 12 domestic top-flight league titles across Spain, Germany and England, spoke about last season's challenges, which saw City finish third in the Premier League and fail to secure silverware in domestic or European competitions. It marked only the second trophyless season of his managerial career. Guardiola rejected the idea that the season was disastrous, instead arguing that it may have been the most valuable of his tenure at City. "You judge happiness if you win. You judge success if you win and win. And that is a problem," he said. "I will not judge myself or my team because of bad seasons or good seasons... Maybe finishing third in a season and never giving up otherwise you finish 10th or 12th, maybe that's a better season than when we won the fourth Premier League in a row. "We faced so many difficulties that were higher due to injuries, relaxation, I was not good enough... for many reasons. Maybe the analysis about my period is that the last season was better. Qualifying for the Champions League when we were on the verge of not getting it. 'WINNERS ARE BORING' Reflecting on setbacks, Guardiola quoted former Uruguayan President Jose Mujica: "Success is how many times you stand up when you fall down." He added: "Fall down, stand up. Former Manchester United and England player Carrick took charge of Middlesbrough in 2022 and guided them to a fourth-placed finish and the playoffs in his first season, but the club have finished 8th and 10th in their past two campaigns. "Middlesbrough Football Club has today parted company with head coach Michael Carrick. Michael's assistants Jonathan Woodgate and Graeme Carrick have also departed the club," the club said in a statement. Carrick made more than 700 club appearances in his career and won five Premier League titles and the Champions League at United under Alex Ferguson. His first stint in management came during an interim spell at United following the sacking of Norwegian manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2021.
