10-year-old with autism ‘excluded' from NSW cross country champs

A 10-year-old boy with autism has been blocked from competing at the NSW primary school cross championships despite doing enough to qualify. 7News reports Charlie Cox made it to the North Coast Cross Country Championships and qualified for the state finals as a special needs athlete. 'We were very disappointed that Charlie was excluded,' Charlie's father Owen told 7News. Tennis Australia and Swimming Australia both have classifications for athletes with formally diagnosed autism, but Australian Athletics does not include autism within its framework. 'As such, the inclusion of an autism category for the sports of athletics and cross country are not feasible in the Representative School Sport Pathway as there are no nationally recognised benchmarks to support fair and consistent result calculation,' the NSW Department of Education said. 'Other states and territories that have made local provisions for participation do so outside the formal School Sport Australia pathway and there is no fair or consistent result calculation, nor is there a pathway to the next level of representation. 'Your concern is acknowledged and please be reassured that the NSW Department of Education remains committed to advocating for broader inclusion through national sporting bodies such as Athletics Australia.' The news comes after a Year 9 student with dwarfism was told last year he couldn't compete because of a rule from World Para Athletics that's recently been adopted by School Sport Australia. Hugo, a Year 9 student from Sydney's Northern Beaches was told he couldn't compete at national trials. Hugo has genetic disorder achondroplasia – the most common form of short-limbed dwarfism, but that hasn't stopped him running. 'I like the feeling of adrenaline. Halfway through the run, I get a feeling that I can't stop, otherwise I'll be so disappointed in myself, and I just like that feeling of running and it just makes me happy,' Hugo told 7NEWS. For years he has competed at state level, but he can no longer compete in any long-distance events because of a new rule adopted by School Sports Australia. 'It's really sad, I see the joy that Hugo gets when he's competing … there's not that many opportunities for kids with disabilities to have success and it's really sad to see that as a mother ripped away from him and without any reasons,' Hugo's mum Alicia said. 'I just don't understand why, it doesn't harm anyone else. It doesn't affect anyone; he has individual medical clearance to do it and it's just really hard to understand.' The new rule, enforced by Athletics Australia is based on medical advice relating to short-statured people running long distances.

Vice Chair Tim Hale has been announced as the new chairman of the Australian Turf Club

Current vice-chair Tim Hale has won a spirited vote to become the new chairman of the Australian Turf Club (ATC). Joining Hale in the executive reshuffle is Caroline Searcy who will assume the newly vacated role of vice-chair of NSW's premier race club. 'The Board of Directors of the Australian Turf Club has this evening elected Tim Hale SC as Chairman,' an ATC statement read. 'Mr Hale has served on the ATC Board since February 2021 and brings extensive legal expertise, governance experience and a long connection to racing.' The appointments follow the decision by Peter McGauran to step down from his post as chairman prior to the expiration of his current term in January next year. McGauran, who has served on the board since February 2022 including three years as chairman, said he made the decision to vacate the role 'aware of the challenges for the ATC ahead' adding that a new chair 'would provide a renewed focus for the club's future and its members'. The outgoing McGauran was a staunch advocate of the failed bid to sell Rosehill Gardens saying he 'remains convinced it was a lost opportunity for the club and wider racing industry.' 'I am grateful to the 44 per cent of ATC members who voted in favour of the proposal (to sell Rosehill),' McGauran said. 'I believe history will judge the decision to pursue the vision as having been the right one.' But while McGauran was spearheading the mooted $5 billion sale, Hale was in strong opposition from the outset, a position he made clear at the highly publicised Upper House inquiry in August last year. Hale's ascension to chairman of the ATC follows a 4 ½ year tenure on the board which has seen him serve as vice-chair since August 2022. Last November, he was successful in being re-elected for a further four-year term. McGauran's departure will see the ATC Board function with six committee members in the interim. The ATC Board comprises seven directors, four elected by ATC members while three independent directors are appointed by Racing Minister David Harris on the recommendation of a selection panel. With McGauran's place a Government appointment, it will be the role of Minister Harris to set about identifying a replacement.

The mis-kick that launched AFLW season 10; Hawks could regain Will Day to face Blues

'Ten seasons, thinking back, it's a nice time to reflect and think about how far we've come in our competition and individually as well,' she said. 'It's been a nice journey and hopefully plenty more to come.' Adelaide star and league best-and-fairest winner Ebony Marinoff, and Brisbane player Ally Anderson, enter the 2025 season with a shared-record 93 games and are set to be the first players to reach 100 AFLW games. Marinoff, who was drafted in 2016 – the same year as Brisbane Lions star Hugh McCluggage – said the fact that McCluggage notched up 200 AFL games last week put the 100-game AFLW milestone into perspective. 'There will be a few that reach the 100-game milestone compared to the 200-games men,' Marinoff said. 'I'm not sure how that coincides but naturally in the first few years we played seven to eight games, and a few more now. But it's an awesome milestone and given the fact that I've played footy all my life and didn't really think that was a possibility to reach 100 games for an AFL club, so it will be pretty cool.' Bulldogs midfielder Ellie Blackburn said she was looking forward to the 2025 season and was glad to see the controversial condensed fixture removed. 'No midweek games, I think it probably allows players to settle a little bit more,' she said. 'You're not focused on the external noise as much as what you probably would have been in previous seasons.' The AFLW's growth has skyrocketed over the last decade, with a recent collective bargaining agreement ensuring all players are paid full-time. However, a detailed review of AFLW has concluded that the players' wish for an expanded season by 2031-32, in which every team played each other once, would come at a $200 million annual loss. But AFLW general manager Emma Moore said she was incredibly proud of the game's growth across the decade, highlighting the improvement of facilities and infrastructure across the country to 'unlock the game for girls'. 'What I am most looking forward to over the next decade is that we're really focused on growth, and we know exactly what we're doing,' she said. 'We've released a draft strategy, and we'll be finalising that in August. It's a long-term strategy and vision, and we will look to be the best competition in the country for women's sport, and we're really, really proud of that goal.' Happy Day: Star Hawk could face Blues on Thursday Jon Pierik Hawthorn star Will Day is firmly in the selection mix to return from injury for Thursday night's clash against Carlton. Day has not played since round three because of a stress fracture in his right foot, but has progressed well over the past month and rejoined full training. A club spokesman said should the 2023 Peter Crimmins medallist emerge unscathed from the Hawks' main training session on Tuesday, he will be in line to face the Blues at the MCG. The Hawks, however, will be without Finn Maginness, who remains in hospital in Hobart after having surgery on a lacerated kidney. Maginness was hurt in the 38-point win over Port Adelaide in Launceston on Saturday. Key forward Mabior Chol is nursing groin soreness but could also be in the frame to face the Blues. However, a Chol return could mean a selection squeeze, for the Hawks already have key talls Mitch Lewis, back from a knee reconstruction, and Calsher Dear up forward.
