Twins wait to see how far ‘down the rabbit hole' front office goes, with first trade complete

MINNEAPOLIS — Byron Buxton was placed on the injured list, and Carlos Correa exited Tuesday's game with an illness. Combined with Monday's trade of Chris Paddack, Minnesota Twins players are wondering how many more holes they'll need to plug in the next few days.
A day after Paddack was traded to the Detroit Tigers, Twins players recognized how frenzied the next 48 hours could be as the team entered sell mode by dealing the pitcher to a division rival.

As if to illustrate their point, a fake case of hug watch involving closer Jhoan Duran during Tuesday's 8-5 loss to the Boston Red Sox at Target Field set social media ablaze.
With Thursday's 5 p.m. CT trade deadline arriving fast, the Twins promise to be one of baseball's most intriguing teams. Not only does the active roster boast several talented free-agents-to-be, but the futures of a handful of good players with multiple years of team control have also been widely speculated about as the Twins ponder what's next for a franchise on the verge of missing the playoffs for the fourth time in five seasons.
'We're still kind of in a holding pattern of seeing exactly how far down the rabbit hole we go as an organization,' catcher Ryan Jeffers said. 'I'm sure now that the ball's rolling with making a move, stuff is going to start happening.'
The decision to make things happen likely was made after Saturday's six-run loss to the Washington Nationals, a low point during a 3-6 stretch that was expected to help the Twins front office make up its mind on whether to buy, sell or stand pat at the deadline.
For weeks, players on a club hovering just below the .500 mark insisted on having enough talent in the clubhouse to push for a postseason spot even while acknowledging their uninspired play could result in a sell-off.
But Paddack's trade put everyone on alert.
Now, reliever Danny Coulombe, outfielder Harrison Bader and Willi Castro no longer wonder if they'll be traded but when.
'You don't think it's a real thing, and when one domino falls, you're like, 'OK, this is actually going to happen,'' Coulombe said. 'It's definite we're looking to sell.'
'It's not going to take me by surprise,' Castro said. 'I'm already prepared. I wish I could stay here. … I don't think anybody is going to be surprised by the news.'

Tuesday's Buxton news — and Correa's in-game departure — hammered another nail into a coffin already being lowered into the ground.
Though the Twins originally said they received a 'good outcome' when Buxton underwent an MRI, the outfielder's irritated left rib cage wasn't progressing enough for him to return soon. The Twins opted to place the two-time All-Star on the 10-day injured list retroactive to Sunday.
Three innings into the game, Correa, who met with trainers after he singled in the first inning, exited with a migraine.
Those developments wiped out any hope potentially gained late Monday when the Twins returned after a 90-minute rain delay and rallied for a walk-off victory over the Red Sox. Not as if one win would change anyone's minds, but the double dose of bad news makes it clearer the front office should work into Thursday figuring out how best to capitalize on its tradable assets.
Many of the team's most valuable players reside in the bullpen, which has led to nonstop trade chatter. Coulombe isn't surprised given the bullpen assembled. Still, trade rumors have become the topic de jour.
'It's impossible not to,' Coulombe said. 'Your life gets flipped upside down. You're with a different team, new city, new teammates. Not to mention all the logistical parts for wives and families. It's definitely unsettling, but ultimately, my wife is a rock star. I always joke that she has a master's in logistics. We'll figure it out. We'll make it work.'
Duran had no idea what was in store for him when he headed to work Tuesday.
Same as the rest of the group, the American League's reliever of the month for May typically spends the first few innings in the home clubhouse physically preparing for the game. The group then walks out together to the bullpen, at which point Duran uniquely greets each member of the assembled staff, a group that includes bullpen catcher Frank Nigro.
When cameras caught a view of Nigro's handsy hello for Duran, the internet ran rampant with trade speculation that the closer was hugging everyone goodbye.

'It's just something we do every day,' Nigro said.
Duran spent the next part of the game talking to former Twins reliever Jorge Alcala, who now pitches for Boston. With Duran and Alcala out of sight of the cameras, rumors of his departure only grew.
Before long, Duran returned to the top area of the Twins bullpen, where Nigro showed him a picture of their hug captured on the internet.

'I do a different high-five with everybody,' Duran said. 'That's my high-five with him.'
But Duran had no idea the photo was accompanied by trade rumors, followed by denials from local and national reporters.
'Oh, my goodness, that's crazy,' he said.
None of the frenzy comes as a surprise to Jeffers.
He was still a rookie when the Twins engaged in their last sell-off in July 2021, a series of moves that resulted in the trades of Nelson Cruz, José Berríos and J.A. Happ. Jeffers remembers being in the Twins clubhouse in St. Louis when Happ was traded to the Cardinals and walked down the hall to join his new team before that night's game.
'It was kind of funky,' Jeffers said. 'You're in there kind of just holding your breath, watching the TVs, watching your phone. … It's always a weird time. You know your locker room is going to change. Sometimes it's going to change for the better. Sometimes it's going to change for the younger.'

Former Detroit Tigers pitcher Kenta Maeda agrees to minor league deal with New York Yankees

Former Detroit Tigers pitcher Kenta Maeda has agreed to a minor league deal with the New York Yankees, according to Yuki Yamada. The deal has not been made official. News of potential involvement between Maeda and the Yankees was confirmed by the New York Post's Jon Heyman. Maeda initially signed with the Tigers ahead of the 2024 season for two years and $24 million, offering starting depth to a Tigers team still undergoing a rebuild. And though the 2024 Tigers surprised many by earning a trip to the playoffs, Maeda didn't factor much into that success, going 3-7 with a 6.09 ERA over 112 ⅓ innings. The nine-year veteran made the team out of spring training but was relegated to a relief role, where he struggled to a 7.88 ERA in seven appearances out of the bullpen. Instead of keeping him around (he was the third-highest paid pitcher on the team entering 2025), the Tigers cut him on May 1, allowing him to sign a minor-league deal with the Chicago Cubs on May 16. Maeda showed little improvement with Triple-A Iowa, going 3-4 with a 5.97 ERA in 12 starts with the Cubs affiliate. The Cubs never promoted him to the big league club, and instead of waiting for promotion, Maeda opted out of his contract in favor of a deal with the Yankees. Twins Bombshell: Star Reliever Reportedly Asked Out Amid Chaotic Trade Deadline

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. For better or worse, the Minnesota Twins became the talk of Major League Baseball at this year's trade deadline. Between Wednesday and Thursday, the Twins traded away 11 players, including 10 from the major league roster. They were big names, too: three-time All-Star shortstop Carlos Correa, fire-balling closer Jhoan Duran, and fellow star reliever Griffin Jax. Jax's trade in particular raised a lot of eyebrows around the game. The 30-year-old still has two-plus years of team control, he's a strikeout machine, and he was traded the day after a very public dugout dispute with manager Rocco Baldelli. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - JULY 22: Relief pitcher Griffin Jax #22 of the Minnesota Twins celebrates after striking out Will Smith #16 of the Los Angeles Dodgers for the last out of the seventh inning at Dodger Stadium on July 22, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. MoreAfter Baldelli removed Jax mid-inning during a 13-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday, the righty was shipped to the Tampa Bay Rays for starting pitcher Taj Bradley just before the 5 p.m. CT deadline on Thursday. On Monday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reported that Jax requested a trade, after Correa both facilitated a joint meeting with Baldelli and informed Jax that he had spoken to general manager Derek Falvey about the team's impending fire sale. "After Jax agreed, Correa brought him into Baldelli's office and helped smooth things over once the manager explained his decision," Hayes wrote for The Athletic. "Correa later informed Jax of the conversation he'd had with Falvey about the franchise's direction. He told Jax he'd waive his no-trade clause for a deal only to Houston if the Twins really were set to break up the roster." "Once the teardown was underway Thursday, including the shocking deal which sent Correa back to the Astros, Jax asked his representative to put in the trade request, multiple league sources confirmed." Hayes also reported that the Twins were seemingly leaning toward hanging onto Jax before the request was made. "While the Twins felt compelled to trade Jhoan Duran earlier because they liked the offers they received, that initially wasn't the case with Jax," wrote Hayes. "Duran was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies early Wednesday evening, only hours after Jax erupted at manager Rocco Baldelli late in a blowout loss to Boston." In the grand scheme of things, Jax can be replaced as a bullpen piece, as great as he was at times. But the larger task, long-term, will be undoing the damage these trades did in the clubhouse, because Jax surely wasn't the only one displeased. Alex Bregman Predicted To Betray Red Sox After Resurgent Season, Leave For $128M Deal

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Boston Red Sox signed Alex Bregman to a three-year, $120 million deal last offseason. His deal gives him the ability to opt out after this season. With Rafael Devers gone, the Red Sox have the money to pay Bregman. He and his agent have reportedly noted they are open to an extension, but the closer Bregman gets to free agency, the more reason he has to wait and see what the open market offers him. Bregman was a two-time All-Star for the Houston Astros. However, he had not played at that same level since 2019. He was still a great player, though, playing a huge role in the Astros' continued success. This season, he found that previous All-Star form and was named to the All-Star Game for the third time in his career. (Photo by) More Rodriguez/Getty Bregman has slashed .293/.366/.535 through 67 games with the Red Sox. From 2020 through 2024, he slashed .261/.350/.445. He should have plenty of suitors in free agency, and the Red Sox may not actually need him as badly as many think. Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller predicted Bregman would leave the Red Sox in favor of a four-year, $128 million deal with the Detroit Tigers. The Red Sox will still be in the mix to keep him, but they do have the pieces in place to move forward without him. "Then again, with Marcelo Mayer now in the mix and Trevor Story not going anywhere in the next few years, Boston might be reluctant enough to increase its investment to allow [someone] else to swoop in," wrote Miller. Mayer is going to be a big part of the team's future. They could slot him in at second base moving forward, but that would create a problem for Kristian Campbell, who has already signed an extension with the team. The Tigers have been linked to Bregman since the offseason. They were unable to land him last winter, but may be able to get him this year.
