Shares of Avic Chengdu Aircraft , the Chinese defence manufacturer behind the JF-17 fighter jets used by Pakistan, have slumped 12% over three trading sessions as tensions flared following India's Operation Sindoor and a strong-worded rebuttal by Prime Minister Narendra Modi rejecting Pakistan's claims of having struck Indian military targets.The jet maker's stock plunged as much as 6.7% on Thursday to 84.34 yuan in Shanghai, adding to earlier losses. The selloff came amid broader weakness in Chinese defence stocks , with the Hang Seng China A Aerospace & Defence Index dropping 1.7% on Thursday — its third consecutive session of losses.The rout accelerated after PM Modi visited the Indian Air Force 's Adampur airbase in Punjab on Tuesday, standing in front of the Russian-made S-400 air defence system — a visual counter to Pakistan's false claims that it had been destroyed using Chinese-origin JF-17 fighter jets.'Pakistan claimed it damaged our S-400 and BrahMos missile bases with JF-17 jets, which is completely false,' said Colonel Sofiya Qureshi. 'It also spread misinformation about damage to Indian airfields in Sirsa, Jammu, Pathankot, Bhatinda, Nalia, and Bhuj — all of which is untrue.'The Indian government, through the Ministry of External Affairs and the Press Information Bureau, dismissed Pakistan's version of events as 'a fabricated attempt to save face.'Alongside Avic Chengdu Aircraft, shares of other major Chinese defence companies also declined on Thursday. China Aerospace Times Electronics, Bright Laser Technologies, North Industries Group, China Spacesat, and AVIC Aircraft fell between 1.5% and 4.2%.The latest drop in Chinese defence stocks comes on the heels of India's successful Operation Sindoor, a military campaign that reportedly demonstrated the effectiveness of domestically produced systems like the Akash surface-to-air missile.Investor sentiment for Chinese defence stocks, which had earlier been boosted by the prospect of rising Chinese arms sales to Pakistan, turned sour after India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire and New Delhi forcefully dismantled what it called a 'coordinated disinformation campaign.'Meanwhile, Indian defence stocks surged in response to the events. Cochin Shipyard jumped 6.8% to Rs 1,814.90 on Thursday, while Paras Defence gained 5%, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders rose 4.5%, and Bharat Dynamics advanced 1.8%. Hindustan Aeronautics climbed over 2%, and Zen Technologies hit its 5% upper circuit for the second day in a row.'The successful performance of Made-in-India defence systems against Chinese and other platforms used by Pakistan is likely to boost long-term demand for indigenous defence equipment,' said Ashwini Shami, EVP & Senior Portfolio Manager at OmniScience Capital. Last Updated: Restrictions were imposed earlier this year during India's Operation Sindoor counter-terror campaign. Some Pakistani news websites and social media accounts of Pakistani celebrities which were banned during India's counter-terror operation Operation Sindoor have resurfaced on social media. It is unclear if those restrictions have been lifted or not as there is no official announcement lifting the ban by the government. However, government sources speaking to News18 said that 'following a periodic review, some social media accounts have been reinstated" but majority of the handles remain blocked. The government sources pointed out that some '14,000 accounts on some social still remain banned". They further added: 'Upon the review, it has been observed that some of these platforms which have been reinstated have not spoken anti India language for a while, which was the main reason for blocking them". The sources said: 'Accounts cannot be permanently banned and are subject to regular reviews as part of the standard process". The ban, part of India's Operation Sindoor counter-terror effort, targeted major Pakistani media outlets including Dawn News, Geo News, ARY News, Bol News, Samaa TV, GNN, Suno News HD and The Pakistan Reference, among others. Together, these channels accounted for an estimated 63 million subscribers. The crackdown also extended to sports and entertainment channels such as Samaa Sports, Uzair Cricket and Hum TV, as well as individual journalists and content creators. Pakistan public and sports-related personalities whose accounts faced ban included Umar Cheema, Asma Shirazi, Muneeb Farooq, Irshad Bhatti, Razi Naama, Wasay Habib, Arzoo Kazmi, Syed Muzammil Shah and former cricketer Shoaib Akhtar. Several of them also faced restrictions on platforms like Instagram and X (formerly Twitter), as the ban widened in early May 2025. The restrictions were imposed amid cross-border information warfare and attempts by these Pakistani social media cells to manipulate Indian public sentiment. A notable example of Pakistani cricketers and celebs spreading misinformation was that of Shahid Afridi, who criticised the people of India and the Indian Army. In early May 2025, Shahid Afridi's YouTube channel was one of the Pakistani platforms blocked in India. Indian households are running into debt like never before. Alarmingly, household debt as a percentage of GDP has doubled in the past one decade. According to the RBI's latest Financial Stability Report released Monday, the household debt-to-GDP ratio stood at 41.9% (at current market prices) as on December 2024, as against 26% in June 2015. The good news, though, is that the debt burden has reduced from 42.9% in June 2024 to 41.9% as of December 2024. Moreover, Indian households' debt-to-GDP ratio is relatively low compared to other emerging market economies, which stood at 46.6%. But what's more concerning is the fact that households are loading up on destructive debt such as personal, credit card and gold loans, than constructive credit, which includes housing loans. On last count, non-housing retail loans—mostly used for consumption—accounted for a lion's share of 54.9% of total household debt as on March 2025 and 25.7% of disposable income as on March 2024. In other words, about Rs 55 out of every Rs 100 that banks and financial institutions are lending to individuals is going towards credit cards, consumer durable loans and all other personal loans, which have steep interest rates. Still, the share of these loans has been growing consistently over the years, and their growth has outpaced that of both housing loans and agriculture and business loans, according to RBI. Broadly, retail loans can be divided into three major categories—non-housing retail loans, housing loans and credit extended to individuals in their personal capacity, but utilised for either personal or business purposes. As on December 2024, if housing loans comprised 29% of total household debt, non-housing retail loans and agriculture and business loans accounted for the rest at 54.9% and 16.1%, respectively. Analysts also warn against the explosion of the riskiest slice of the credit market comprising sub-prime and near-prime personal loans, particularly amid rising living costs, stagnant wages and inflation. While non-housing retail loans are seeing an unprecedented increase in the recent past, the component of housing loans to overall household debt, on the other hand, has reduced from about 36%-37% in FY19 to 29% as on December 2024. Perhaps driven by the rush of non-housing retail loans, consumer segment loans grew at a CAGR of 20.4% between March 2021 and March 2025, as against 14.6% growth seen in overall bank credit. Disaggregated data shows that incremental growth has been mainly driven by existing borrowers availing additional loans, and their share has increased to more than a third of the housing loans sanctioned in March, 2025. Moreover, as RBI's latest report noted, the share of borrower accounts with loan-to-value (LTV) ratios greater than 70% is also rising, and delinquency levels are greater for lower-rated and highly leveraged borrowers. However, these have declined significantly from the levels seen during COVID-19. Sensing danger, the RBI has repeatedly flagged heightened risks in the unsecured lending segment and cautioned lenders to remain vigilant, while offering personal loans for consumption purposes. In fact, in November 2023, fearing a rise in bad loans, the central bank raised capital to risk-weighted asset ratios for both banks and NBFCs to 125%. Consequently, retail loan disbursements have slowed following the implementation of regulatory measures across lender types, product types and credit-active consumers. At an aggregate level, the per capita debt of individual borrowers has grown from Rs 3.9 lakh in March 2023 to Rs 4.8 lakh in March 2025. The rise in per capita debt has mainly been led by the higher-rated borrowers. The share of better-rated customers among total borrowers is growing, both in terms of the outstanding amount and the number of borrowers. This is important from a debt serviceability and financial stability perspective, as it indicates that household balance sheets at an aggregate level are resilient, the RBI noted. Higher debt may help boost consumption, but it could be detrimental to economic growth. As a 2017 BIS study (which used data on 54 economies over 1990-2015) revealed, household debt boosts consumption and GDP growth in the short run but mostly within one year. In the longer run, however, a one percentage point increase in the household debt-to-GDP ratio tends to lower growth by 0.1%. The negative long-run effects on consumption intensify as the household debt-to-GDP ratio exceeds 60%. Households' debt burden is rising even as the growth in household savings fell with a thud to 5.3% of GDP in FY23 -- a 47-year low. However, the Ministry of Finance in the past reasoned that the decline in household savings was due to a double-digit growth in personal loans. "The household sector is not in distress, clearly. They are buying vehicles and homes on mortgages," it clarified, dismissing concerns over the rising indebtedness of households. Even as loan growth to the consumer segment slowed down, the quality of the portfolio has improved. Delinquency levels, except for credit cards, have decreased, upgrades from Special Mention Accounts (SMA)-2 accounts shot up, while slippages fell. The gross non-performing asset ratio of the banks' consumer segment loans stood at 1.4% in March, 2025. Moreover, in a sign of improving underwriting standards, the share of borrowers rated prime and above increased for both PSBs and PVBs. Likewise, the NBFC sector too remains resilient, but remains vulnerable to stress in household balance sheets with attendant consequences for asset quality. Bad loans within the retail segment stood at 3.1% compared to 1.2% for banks in March 2025. But on balance, the RBI's latest report observed that overall risks to the Indian financial system from lending to households remain contained with easing monetary policy cycle likely to reduce debt service pressures on borrowers going forward. However, the trend in household debt accumulation, especially among lower-rated borrowers, requires close monitoring, it added. Meanwhile, an update of the analysis of financial wealth of Indian households shows that it sharply in FY24. Since Q3, FY20, asset price gains contributed to around one-third of the increase in the financial assets, while the remaining was on account of an increase in financial savings. Deposits and insurance and pension funds formed nearly 70% of household financial wealth as on March 2024 even as the share of equities and investment funds has increased.

New Delhi: Union Communications and Development of Northeastern Region (DoNER) Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Wednesday praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that the PM has visited northeast India 70 times, which is a record in itself. He said that if you total all the visits of all Prime Ministers in the last 65 years, even they could not match the number of visits PM Modi has made. Along with that, an investment of Rs 5 lakh crore has been made in the northeastern region. In an exclusive interview with IANS, Jyotiraditya Scindia spoke on several topics, from his predictions for the Bihar polls to BSNL's return to profit. Below is the full interview: IANS: The previous government didn't focus on northeast India. But PM Modi called northeast India 'Ashta Lakshmi'. What do you want to say about it? Jyotiraditya Scindia: For this, we have to look at the history and past of India. The northeastern region used to connect the world with the Global South as a bridge. All the ASEAN countries' trade routes, migration routes—everything was based on the northeastern region. Our northeastern region was a connector, and if its potential had been described to the world, it would have been commendable. But in the last 65 years, this region was gradually sidelined and blocked from development and progress. Changing that concept, the Prime Minister used all his power for the development and progress of the northeastern region. This was the voice of his conscience. He has visited the northeastern region about 70 times on his own, which is a record in itself. If you total all the visits of all Prime Ministers in the last 65 years, even they could not match his number of visits. Along with that, an investment of Rs 5 lakh crore has been made in the northeastern region. In infrastructure—whether it is roads, rail, or air service (my former ministry)—where there were only nine airports in 2014, today, 17 airports have been built. In states like Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, there wasn't even a single airport before. Today, there are four airports in Arunachal and one in Sikkim. In roads, there were 10,000 kilometres of National Highways before; today there are 16,000 kilometres. That means in ten years, we built almost as much as in the previous 65 years. In rural areas, 40,000 kilometres of roads have been built using Rs 50,000 crore. It's the same with railways: nearly 2,000 kilometres of railway lines are being constructed with an investment of Rs 80,000 crore. We are committed to providing rail services in all eight states. Today, rail service is available in five states; we will provide it in the remaining three by 2027. Today, the longest road bridge in the country—the 4.5-km Bhupen Hazarika Bridge—has been built, and the world's longest road-cum-rail bridge—the 9.5-km Bogibeel Bridge—has been completed. This is a record we couldn't even imagine. Similarly, in the social sector—in health, education, and every other area—the goal has been to make the eight northeastern states the growth engine of the country. If we look at the world's economic growth rate today, it's about 2.5 per cent. India is growing at 7 to 7.5 per cent—more than three times the world's rate. But if we look at the eight states of the northeast, all eight have been growing at 11 to 13 per cent over the last ten years. That means the northeastern region is growing at almost 3.5 to 4 times the world average, and more than twice India's average. So, if you think of all India's states and Union Territories as a train, then the engine of that train has definitely become the northeastern region. IANS: What do you want to say about the slogan 'Narendra Surrender' used by LoP Rahul Gandhi? Jyotiraditya Scindia: What else is left for a political party to say, one that has been rejected by the people of the country? The nation's honour and respect should always be the priority. But today, the Congress has fallen into such a deep pit that it shows India in a bad light internationally, comes back to India, and raises questions about our armed forces, our identity, our faith, and our pride. When surgical strikes or the Balakot operation happen, they say to show the proof. When Operation Sindoor happens, they question how many planes were shot down. It has become clear that the people of India don't care about a party or a leadership that doesn't care about India's pride. IANS: What is your prediction for the Bihar polls? Jyotiraditya Scindia: We are fully confident about Bihar. The NDA coalition government will be formed. BJP and all its alliance partners will fight together. Service to Bihar, development of Bihar, and progress of Bihar are our priorities. The Prime Minister has shown over the past 10–11 years that development and progress are our focus. Change is the call of India, and the Prime Minister has brought the same change across the entire region—economically, socially, in every field—and is taking India's flag to the world stage. IANS: The digital revolution has completed a decade. PM Modi wrote an article on it. How do you see this as an accomplishment? Jyotiraditya Scindia: I want to explain that this revolutionary change hasn't just happened in India but in the world. There was a time, about 100 years ago, when the Industrial Revolution happened. Roads and railways were built, and that infrastructure laid the foundation for industrial growth. In this century, in this era, Information Technology and the Digital Revolution are the equivalent of road and railway construction. The difference is that those roads and railways were visible to everyone—they were physical, permanent. But this digital highway is invisible. Yet despite being invisible, its ability to transform ordinary lives is extraordinary. As a citizen of this country, I want to thank and congratulate the Prime Minister. Ten years ago, he not only predicted this revolutionary change but also created a complete strategy for how India would lead the world as a new power in this digital revolution. Let me share some numbers. A country that had only 90 crore mobile users now has 120 crore. A country that had only 25 crore internet connections now has almost 100 crore. A country with just 6 crore broadband connections (defined as over 2 GB) now has 94 crore. This is not an ordinary change—it is earth-shattering. And what has this change enabled? This is not just a telecommunications revolution. Because the whole world is now in your hands, in this box (your phone). You are connected to the world, and the world is connected to you. What is the spin-off of this? Economic progress. The money the government owes you can be sent to you directly in this box. Whatever business you want to do, you can do it with the whole world. The whole world can know you. On this basis, India has set new records in UPI and DBT. Today, 46 per cent of the world's digital transactions happen in India. Nearly 1.7 billion transactions occur in India every year, worth about three trillion dollars. India is not a follower. India is the leader in digital transactions. If anyone deserves credit for building this digital highway, connecting everyone, and enabling UPI and DBT, it is Prime Minister Narendra Modi. And look at the cost. Ten years ago, data cost Rs 290 per GB. Today, it is around Rs 9.5 per GB—a 95 per cent drop. Globally, the average data rate is about $2.50 per GB. India's rate is five per cent of that. So India can become the world's data bank and data leader on the basis of this capability. IANS: BSNL recently announced a profit. How did that happen? Jyotiraditya Scindia: The UPA government had left BSNL on critical support - not even ventilator support. The Prime Minister resolved that we would fully redeploy BSNL in the service of the people and make it beloved once again. Several economic packages were announced, including Rs 3 lakh crore for BSNL. All the economic and strategic steps were taken. On the basis of tireless efforts over the last 12–15 months—and I give full credit to every member of the BSNL family, from linesmen in villages to the headquarters team—they have worked with total dedication and commitment. For the first time in 18 years, in the October–December 2024 quarter, BSNL posted a net profit of Rs 262 crore. In the January–March 2025 quarter, it posted Rs 280 crore in net profit. This wasn't possible in the last 18 years. For FY 2025, BSNL reported 8 per cent revenue growth, from Rs 20,000 crore to nearly Rs 21,900 crore. Operating profit jumped from Rs 2,346 crore last year to Rs 5,300 crore this year—a 150 per cent increase. The net loss, which was Rs 5,170 crore last year, has been reduced by 55 per cent to Rs 2,100 crore. And last year, BSNL achieved the highest CAPEX in its history - Rs 25,000 crore. For the first time ever, India has created its own military-grade stack for full 4G implementation. 95,000 sites have been installed, nearly 90,000 commissioned, and 74–75,000 are live on air. Our 4G network is fully ready with a self-reliant solution. We are adopting a similar approach in India Post. We've been working on complete business process reengineering for the last 12 months. We have created six verticals and four horizontals to make each business line profitable. We're adopting IT through the IT 2.0 plan. For the first time, we've appointed a Chief Technology Officer in the postal department, along with Deputy CTOs for each vertical. We're looking at our cost structure, comparing it with the competition, and figuring out how to increase revenue. By rationalising, automating, and focusing on each vertical, we're preparing India Post to become a logistics powerhouse. No distribution platform in the world has as many points of presence as India Post—1,84,000. We want to convert this into a logistics giant in the coming days.
